Chapter 1685: Chapter 163: Testing People’s Intentions
After making up his mind, Peter Brown pondered how to go about this task.
Truthfully, after experiencing so much, Peter Brown had no trouble operating a company with ten million US dollars in his hands, he was not really worried about being unable to establish his own company.
After finalizing things with the principal, Peter Brown earnestly wrote three graduation theses in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Seeing the professors gaze at his paper as if they were looking at the Bible made Peter Brown chuckle. It was merely him introducing some content that was closest to the current technology.
The next day, Peter Brown went to the Group Company.
When Mr. Armstrong heard that Peter Brown wanted to resign, he was taken aback and stared at Peter Brown.
"Tell me, what are you thinking?" he asked.
"Didn’t think much, I have plenty of ideas, and I want to turn these creations into reality, invent some things that benefit humanity, and earn a little money,"
Peter Brown said casually.
Knowing Peter Brown’s capability, Mr. Armstrong understood after hearing this and nodded slightly, "I knew you’d take this step sooner or later. How about this, don’t resign. Take a leave of absence without pay. If things don’t work out, you still have this way back, right?"
Even though Peter knew in his heart that as long as he did it, there would be no failing, he was moved by Mr. Armstrong’s attitude, and seriously said, "Alright, I’ll listen to Mr. Armstrong."
Mr. Armstrong laughed loudly, "Now that you’re going to be a boss too, let’s not be so formal. From now on, let’s address each other as brothers."
"Okay!"
Peter Brown did not object.
Mr. Armstrong’s face revealed even more smiles and said, "That’s excellent. If you need anything, just give me a call. I believe I still have some connections that can help."
After the change in status, Mr. Armstrong’s attitude towards Peter Brown had also significantly changed, no longer maintaining the aloof demeanor he previously had.
The two of them sat opposite each other and chatted idly for a while, Mr. Armstrong asked, "Do you have a direction for development yet?"
Peter Brown then shared with Mr. Armstrong about his recent experience at Provincial University.
After listening, Mr. Raymond looked at Peter Brown in astonishment and said, "That’s great. In that case, I am even less worried about your development now. The professors at Provincial University carry a much greater prestige than us here, who knows in which direction you’ll develop from here."
As Mr. Armstrong spoke these words, he also inwardly sighed with amazement. It seemed that this farmer was truly going to defy expectations.
Leaving Mr. Armstrong’s office, Peter Brown directly went to process the leave of absence without pay. The entire process was very fast.
Clearly, the news of Peter Brown’s leave without pay had shaken the entire Group company, and the news spread quickly.
Suddenly, Peter Brown’s cell phone was almost bombarded.
Seeing the numerous calls coming in, Peter Brown had an idea; this was also a time to understand what everyone was thinking. It was time to see how many of those who followed him would continue to follow.
So, when Peter Brown received calls from his subordinates in the branch company, he earnestly assured them that this was real, and also mentioned his plans to start his own business.
Although he did not invite them to join his venture, he made it very clear over the phone.
Without delay, Peter Brown rushed back to the branch company. Upon arriving there, he actively went to Matthew Clarkson to hand over all his related work.
Seeing that Peter Brown was truly handing over his duties, Matthew Clarkson was stunned. His feelings were extremely mixed, with a sense of unease about Peter Brown’s departure, but more so, joy—Peter’s departure naturally meant bigger benefits for him.
Matthew Clarkson couldn’t comprehend Peter at all. Pulling Peter to sit down, he said, "Peter, what are you really thinking? Staying here, your potential for development would be tremendous."
"Not much of a plan, really. The income here is just too low. I want to try starting a business, perhaps first setting up a small company to see how it goes,"
Peter Brown did not reveal exactly how much money he had.
Matthew Clarkson frowned, "Peter, even if you stumbled upon some money, from what I know, you invested over one hundred thousand with your uncle, and on housing here, you’ve invested a lot, which must be nearly used up, right?"
"Yeah, not much left, so it does feel like I’m short on money," Peter replied.
Matthew Clarkson was even more dismissive now.
Just then, some leaders of the branch company came in and everyone chatted with Peter for a while. Hearing that Peter felt short on money hence was choosing to start a business, everyone internally scoffed at his naivety. Did he really think starting a business was that easy?
They felt they had grasped Peter Brown’s thoughts completely and looked down on him even more for his peasant origins.
"Where do you plan on starting your business?" Matthew Clarkson’s question made Peter Brown pause. Truthfully, Peter had not yet decided where exactly he would start his business.
"Right now, farmers are also developing quite rapidly. I’ll first go back to the village to have a look, and then decide after that. Maybe move to the provincial capital, or maybe just stay in the village."
Starting a business in the village?
Everyone sighed even heavier. The poor guy must be delusional about money. He could make a few hundred thousands a year in this leadership position, but if he actually went through with starting a business, it could end up making nothing. Not just making nothing, he could even lose all his money.
"Where will your initial capital come from?"
"Speaking of that, I’m thinking of seeing if anyone wants to buy a villa, sell my villa, that should be worth a few hundred thousands?"
"You want to sell the villa?" Matthew Clarkson asked, surprised.
"No initial capital, of course I have to sell the villa," Peter said.
The Chief Engineer said, "Villas in County Town don’t sell for much. Your villa cost 300,000 internally, out there it’s worth around 600,000 at most, and you spent two to three hundred thousands on renovations, in reality, you might only get between five to six hundred thousands for it. It’d be better to get a mortgage loan through connections."
Feigning sudden realization, Peter Brown said, "That really makes sense. Well said. I’ll look into getting a loan then, should be able to get around three hundred thousand, right?"
Hearing this, everyone was even less optimistic about Peter Brown’s approach, thinking he was just messing around.
"What about your project?" Matthew Clarkson couldn’t help but ask again.
"Rest for a few days and then I’ll think about it," Peter replied.
Ah!
Everyone looked at Peter Brown as if he were a fool. He hadn’t thought anything through and already wanted to start a business; this was surely a disaster.
Having learned of Peter Brown’s intentions, everyone lost even more interest in talking with him, and from then on, their paths diverged.
