Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Regretful Classmates
After the gift was delivered, Peter Brown walked in. With a single glance, he noticed there were only about twenty tables, making the whole hall look quite spacious.
Jessamine Armstrong’s mother personally accompanied Peter and others inside. Upon seeing Peter examining the banquet tables, she quickly said, "We didn’t know you were coming. We’re a bit short on tables."
Peter turned to Charles Carter with a smile, "Charles, how should we handle this?"
Charles laughed, "Don’t worry, I have already prepared for this situation. I knew it would be like this, and I have sent my chefs over already. Adding about twenty tables should be enough."
Jessamine’s mother interjected, "Twenty? That’s too much. You only have a hundred people, adding ten tables will be enough."
Charles smiled again, "Well, it depends on who is coming. When they hear that Peter is here, I believe there will be a large crowd."
Reuben Taylor nodded, "Indeed, my father, learning Peter’s here, said he also wants to come over for a drink to celebrate."
Peter just laughed wryly, realizing that the number of people who might show up was indeed going to be quite a lot.
Soon, the tables were set up. Despite the original plan being to have them eat in a private room, Peter waved off the suggestion, saying, "Let’s enjoy the lively atmosphere outside."
"CEO Wang, our Chase is really lucky to have you as his friend."
Jessamine’s mother worked in the county and knew how to handle matters diligently. Originally, she didn’t think highly of Chase White, but today’s events made her change her perspective entirely. She started to actually like him, and her goodwill towards Peter increased even more.
She also had knowledge of Reuben Taylor’s background, knowing that he was Mayor Taylor’s son. Seeing many distinguished guests from the county arriving, she was satisfied with the prestige of today’s banquet. With these people present, the overall status of the banquet was elevated.
As expected, some county leaders and bosses began to arrive upon hearing the news. Everyone was vying to shake hands and greet Peter.
Among those present was a table with Chase’s fellow students. They appeared visibly shaken as they watched Peter, who was seated among the distinguished guests. They wanted to greet Peter, but remembered how they dismissed him as a mere farmer back in school.
Back then, Peter wasn’t well-received in class. As everyone recalled those times, they remembered Peter, in tattered clothes, wearing liberation shoes, and sitting alone. Almost no one wanted to interact with him.
"On retrospect, it really was only Chase who would hang out with Peter."
Actually, Peter had never considered interacting with his old classmates. Even when he had been neglected, and the only reason he helped Chase was to pay back his kindness. Today, he was finally able to pay Chase back.
Soon, the wedding ceremony started. The Wedding Celebration Company did a great job, and they created an excellent atmosphere. Even though there were twenty extra tables, with the help from Charles Carter’s staff, there were no issues at all.
As the atmosphere became more lively, probably on the instruction of the Hawkins family, Peter was invited to officiate the wedding on stage.
Stepping onto the stage, everyone noticed that Peter’s clothes weren’t impressive, and he was dressed like a farmer. However, no one dared to underestimate him.
A lot of people had witnessed what happened today. Peter Brown had given away a BMW car. Although it wasn’t the best car around, it was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, nonetheless.
"Is this man really a farmer?"
Some people began scrutinizing Peter.
After the marriage certificate was issued, the master of ceremonies, on the instruction of the Hawkins family, of course, invited Peter to say a few words.
Gripping the microphone, Peter looked at the crowd below before speaking, "Today is the great joyous day of my old classmate, and my best friend in class, Chase. I’m so happy. I’m a farmer and I’m not good at talking. All I know is - repay kindness with kindness, and revenge with revenge!"
Addressing Chase, he continued, "Chase is a kind man. I remember in class, everyone looked down on me and didn’t want to hang out with me. Only Chase treated me fairly. My family was struggling financially back then. Every time, the money sent from my home wasn’t enough to last until the end of the month. It was Chase who lent me money. Chase, do you remember the last time when I didn’t have any money for food? You took out a hundred dollars and bought meal tickets for me. I know that your family was also struggling and that was the money you had saved. I still haven’t repaid you that hundred dollars!"
"Peter, that’s a small thing," Chase responded, smiling.
Shaking his head, Peter continued, "What may be a small thing for many, a hundred dollars, is a big deal for a famished farmer. I, Peter Brown, have always remembered this debt. I have always wanted to repay this kindness and never found an opportunity. Today, I have come to settle this debt!"
After saying this, Peter raised his cup to Chase and Jessamine, "To good people having good returns! To a hundred years of harmonious union, long-lasting happiness!"
"Cheers!"
Peter drained his cup.
"Cheers!"
The guests, moved by Peter’s heartfelt words, raised their cups and drained the wine in their glasses.
Watching Peter return to his seat, the guests below fell into deep thought.
"So he was returning a favor!"
"A hundred dollars gets a BMW in return!"
"F***, isn’t that a bit too serious?"
"You guys don’t know, besides the car, all the people he brought gave gift money in tens of thousands. Some others also brought large gifts worth thousands to tens of thousands. Chase received nearly 2 million dollars in gift money today!"
"Who would have thought that Chase would have such foresight?"
...
Everyone was discussing this matter. Sitting in the middle was a table of Chase’s classmates. They watched Peter with a complicated gaze. Many regretted their earlier dismissal of Peter. If they knew back then that Peter would end up so successful, they wouldn’t have minded lending a hundred dollars, even a thousand or ten thousand dollars!
How did Chase get so lucky? How did he have such foresight?
Chase’s classmates were regretting deeply. Jessamine, however, gazed at Chase sweetly. Her gaze then shifted to her parents, who were all smiles. She knew that from now on, her parents would never look down on Chase again. This proved that she was a person of judgement.
Thinking about her current circumstances - having just gotten married, having a husband she’s satisfied with, having over 2 million dollars in savings, and owning a BMW car, a blissful smile appeared at the corner of her
