Suddenly, I Am Rich -
Chapter 70: Let’s Hope
Chapter 70: Let’s Hope
The screen loaded quickly.
Gray leaned in slightly as a profile popped up.
Will Morris – Store Manager, Riverside Branch
Tenure: 3 years and 8 months
Status: Active
Employment Type: Internal Transfer
Previous Position: Assistant, Central Region
Education: Business Management – No Degree (2 years incomplete)
References on File: 1
Referrer: Executive Director Leonard Morris
Gray’s eyes narrowed.
"Leonard Morris..." he murmured.
He clicked into the reference section, and there it was in plain text.
Relationship to Referrer: Nephew
Gray stared at the screen for a long moment, letting that sink in.
So that was it.
Will wasn’t hired for his qualifications. He wasn’t promoted because he was capable or experienced. Instead, he was picked because he had a relationship with someone on top.
"That explains a lot," Gray muttered, fingers slowly curling into a fist on the desk.
It explained the confidence. The entitlement that Will had. The sense of ownership he had over that office space. And most of all, it explained how he managed to run the branch so poorly without anyone from upper management batting an eye.
Because if your uncle is sitting on the board, who’s going to report you?
Gray leaned back in his chair, his jaw clenched.
He knew this kind of thing happened in big companies. Nepotism, politics, connections.
However, if he got the job through connections, then wasn’t it just basic human decency to at least do the job well?
Instead of protecting the staff or improving the branch, he let things rot. He ruled by intimidation and laziness, sat in his position like it was a throne he didn’t have to earn. And the people who suffered for it were the ones who showed up every day, worked hard, and just wanted to do their jobs.
Gray exhaled slowly and closed the file.
But he wasn’t done yet.
His fingers hovered over the keyboard again, this time typing a new name into the search bar.
Leonard Morris.
If this man had been high enough to pull strings and plant his nephew into a managerial role, then Gray needed to know who exactly he was dealing with.
The search results loaded quickly.
Leonard Morris – Former Executive Director (Central Division)
Tenure: 11 years, 4 months
Status: Terminated
Date of Termination: April (Five months ago)
Reason: Breach of Conduct / Internal Audit Findings / Abuse of Company Resources
Final Disciplinary Action: Dismissed Without Severance
Gray blinked at the screen, then slowly sat back.
’So Leonard Morris had already been fired and without severance payment?’
That only happened when the company had undeniable proof of serious misconduct.
"Corruption..." Gray muttered. "So, it runs in the family."
It painted the entire picture clearly now. Leonard must’ve secured Will’s position before he got exposed.
Gray leaned forward again and stared at the screen. The pieces were falling into place. This was no longer just a matter of poor leadership. It was a leftover stain from someone else’s corruption.
"Alright then," Gray said under his breath, as a small smile appeared on his face.
"No more hiding behind your uncle, little boy."
He clicked back to the main dashboard and opened a new tab.
It was time to start preparing for a very different kind of cleanup.
Gray’s fingers tapped steadily against the keyboard as he pulled up more documents, diving into performance reports, payroll logs, vendor transactions, and maintenance requests from the Riverside Branch over the past two years.
It was quite tedious, but Gray didn’t mind the work. He wanted to do this right. He couldn’t accuse Will of anything without concrete proof. If there was any misuse of budget, manipulation of records, or fraudulent sign-offs, it had to be documented. And now that he had full access to the company, there was no better time to dig than now.
Hour after hour, Gray combed through the files.
Gray’s fingers moved steadily across the keyboard as he dug deeper into the system’s records. The goal was simple. It’s to find proof. Something solid that would expose what Will had been doing behind the scenes.
But as the hours ticked by, the more frustrated Gray became.
Will was messy in person. But when it came to paperwork? The guy was careful. Too careful.
Each file Gray opened was well-formatted, time-stamped properly, and signed off cleanly. The logs matched the reports. The budgets didn’t show any obvious gaps. It was almost too neat.
"Tch..." Gray muttered under his breath. "He’s good at cleaning up after himself."
Still, Gray didn’t stop. He kept looking. Eventually, he did find a few things. But they were just small inconsistencies that stood out only because he was reading everything so closely.
There were unnecessary maintenance calls from a third-party contractor, and the charge rates were almost double the average. The notes were vague too like "emergency repair," "cooling unit inspection," or "safety check."
Worse of it was that he found out that there was a recurring monthly entry labeled under "Employee Welfare Supplies." It was marked as delivered, paid, and completed.
’Damn, it seems like I’ll have a hard time here.’
Gray leaned back in his chair and exhaled slowly, tapping the pen in his hand against his desk.
All the things he found weren’t enough. They weren’t the kind of things that would get someone fired. At best, Will would just say sorry for his carelessness. At worst, he’d blame it on someone.
"He knows how to cover his tracks," Gray muttered, eyes narrowing at the screen. "But he’s not perfect."
He clicked through a few more files and bookmarked the things he found odd. Then he opened a new document and began organizing everything he’d found so far into bullet points.
Tomorrow, he’d bring it to Marcus. Maybe the guy would have a better idea of where to look next or how to pressure the right people into uncovering more.
"Hah... I didn’t know that it would be this hard," Gray shook his head in disappointment.
