Suddenly, I Am Rich -
Chapter 62: Meeting the Employees
Chapter 62: Meeting the Employees
The next morning came faster than Gray expected.
His alarm buzzed at 5:30 a.m., but he was already half-awake by the time it rang. There was a strange mixture of nerves and excitement in his chest as he sat up and stretched.
Today was his first official day as CEO.
He stepped into the bathroom, splashed cold water on his face, and stared at himself in the mirror. His hair was slightly messy, and his eyes were a little puffy from the late-night research. But underneath that, he was ready.
After a quick shower, he dressed in one of the few formal outfits he owned. A white dress shirt, navy slacks, and a charcoal blazer. It wasn’t flashy, but it was clean and looked presentable.
Still, Gray made a mental note as he adjusted his sleeves.
’I need to buy more clothes like this.’ He only had three proper dress shirts in total, and two pairs of slacks. If he was going to do this job every day, his wardrobe wouldn’t last the week.
He was just tightening the last button of his cuff when his phone buzzed.
[Daniel]: I’m already outside, Sir. Take your time as needed.
[Gray]: Alright.
Gray grabbed his bag, double-checked that he had everything he needed, and quietly stepped out. Lily was still asleep in her room, curled under a blanket.
He didn’t want to wake her up so before leaving, he left a note on the fridge. He had also prepared a sandwich yesterday for Lily’s breakfast. He just instructed Lily to reheat it in the microwave.
After all of that, he finally stepped outside and spotted the familiar black car parked by the curb. Daniel stood beside the driver’s door, checking his watch. The man was dressed in his usual black suit.
It seemed like even drivers in the company had to dress formal.
"Good morning, Daniel." Gray walked up to him and gave a small nod.
"Good morning, Sir," Daniel replied with a polite bow of his head. He opened the rear passenger door for him. "I hope you slept well, Sir."
Gray chuckled lightly as he stepped into the car.
"If reading five binders and dreaming about spreadsheets counts as sleeping well, then yeah—I slept like a baby."
Daniel let out a quiet laugh as he closed the door behind him and circled back to the driver’s seat. The car pulled smoothly away from the curb and into the streets.
The sun had just started to rise, casting a soft golden light through the buildings. It wasn’t rush hour yet, so the roads were still quiet. Outside, bakeries were just beginning to open, and joggers passed by on the sidewalks in hoodies and headphones.
Inside the car, it was peaceful.
Gray leaned back slightly in the seat and glanced out the window.
"You look sharp today, Sir," Daniel said as they turned onto a main road.
Gray blinked, then gave a sheepish smile.
"Thanks. Though I should probably get more clothes. I don’t think I can recycle this blazer more than twice a week without people noticing."
Daniel smiled faintly in the rearview mirror.
"If I may say so, first impressions are important. But after that, how you carry yourself matters more than what you wear."
"I’ll try to remember that," Gray said, adjusting his collar a bit.
They drove in comfortable silence for another thirty minutes until they finally pulled up in front of the Riverside Branch.
Gray’s eyes drifted up to the modest building.
"This is it, Sir." Daniel said, parking the car smoothly at the parking lot.
Gray nodded once and reached for the door handle. He exhaled slowly, then he opened the door and stepped out.
"I’ll wait here, Sir. Good luck."
"Thanks," Gray uttered before walking.
Marcus was already waiting near the entrance, with a clipboard in his. He wore a navy suit today, with his tie knotted cleanly at the neck.
"Good morning, Mr. Adams," Marcus greeted with a firm nod. "You’re just right on time."
"Good morning," Gray replied, walking up beside him. "Are the staff all here?"
"Not all, but they’re beginning to arrive," Marcus said, glancing at his watch. "It just hit 7 in the morning, but I suggest we start with introductions already in the break room."
"That sounds good to me."
As they entered the store together, Gray felt his heart beating faster in his chest. He could feel excitement, nervousness, and anticipation all together in his mind.
The door to the break room opened with a gentle push, and Gray stepped in behind Marcus.
The room was modest in size. The floor tiles were clean, though a little scuffed near the corners. The lighting overhead was warm and soft which Gray appreciated.
There was a small kitchenette tucked to one side with a coffee maker, a microwave, and a battered refrigerator covered in faded sticky notes and a few old magnet souvenirs.
Three round tables filled the center of the room, each surrounded by a few metal chairs. There were only about two dozen seats total, and even then, some looked a little wobbly.
A few employees had already taken their seats, chatting in low voices while sipping from Styrofoam cups. There were also others standing by the doorway, stretching or checking their phones, waiting for things to begin.
Gray gave the room a quick look, taking it all in.
It was decent, but just decent. This was where employees spent their breaks—where they relaxed, recharged. And yet, it looked more like a storage corner than a place meant to give people rest.
There were also not enough seats and no proper space for longer breaks.
Mentally, he took a note of it.
’This needs to be better.’ He nodded. After experiencing working in different fields, he knew better than anyone what employees need to work better.
’I’d deal with this later.’
For now, it was time to meet the people who would be working under him.
As Marcus stepped forward to call for attention, the employees quieted down and turned their eyes to Gray.
There were about twenty of them in the room now, all wearing the same company uniform. They have their polos, a pair of black pants, and name tags on the side of their chest.
There was a mixture of older and younger faces, men and women, all waiting to see who their new boss was.
Gray inhaled quietly through his nose and stepped forward.
"Good morning, everyone..."
