Stunning Dragon Wife -
Chapter 627 - 626: Emotional Breakdown
Chapter 627: Chapter 626: Emotional Breakdown
Though Wu Damming was already in his fifties, his long tenure as village chief, along with the support of the entire Wu family, meant he ruled over White Dragon Village like a tyrant, far from the emperor’s reach. He always looked vigorous, but today, in the interrogation room, he seemed frail and despondent, slumped in a chair, his hair completely white, as if wearing a cap of snow.
Just a few short days had aged Wu Damming considerably, making him appear like an old man in his eighties.
"Wu Damming, lift your head, see who has come to visit you."
Luo Yihua shouted at Wu Damming.
Startled, Wu Damming quickly raised his head.
When he saw Zhang Xiaoshan’s figure, his eyes immediately filled with a look of intense hatred and animosity.
"Zhang Xiaoshan, you little rat, you dare to see me."
As he spoke, his teeth clenched with such vehemence as if he could only be satisfied by biting through his cheeks.
Zhang Xiaoshan walked up to Wu Damming and coldly looked down at him, saying,
"You’re the one who messed up, embezzling the charity funds meant for building the school in the village. What does that have to do with me?"
Zhang Xiaoshan thought to himself that Wu Damming probably didn’t yet know of his relationship with Jia Lanhua, hence his lack of panic and guilt.
Wu Damming immediately said through gritted teeth,
"If it weren’t for you always seeking the limelight in the village, surpassing my reputation and threatening my position, if it weren’t for your scheme to get me in bed with my brother’s wife, Zhang Yulian, if it weren’t for you causing me to lose all face, becoming the laughingstock of White Dragon Village, would I have taken such a risk?"
"So, this situation is all your doing."
"Smack."
Zhang Xiaoshan slapped Wu Damming unceremoniously.
Wu Damming’s mouth filled with blood from the blow.
"What the hell is that logic? By that reasoning, I should blame you. If it weren’t for you old fool stealing the village’s money, which led to all this, your wife Jia Lanhua wouldn’t have been driven to suicide, and my Sister Man wouldn’t have been heartbroken."
The more Zhang Xiaoshan spoke, the angrier he became, and he gave Wu Damming two more heavy slaps.
Wu Damming, a frail old man, couldn’t take Zhang Xiaoshan’s beating. Two teeth fell out, and his mouth was filled with blood, but most importantly, he was angry and humiliated.
He had always been held in high regard in White Dragon Village; in his view, Zhang Xiaoshan was just a junior, and now dared to treat him like this?
"Government, government, I’m being attacked, help me, please."
Wu Damming turned to Luo Yihua for help.
But Luo Yihua, as if having heard nothing, turned his head to look out the window.
The two guards, seeing their superior Luo Yihua not taking a stand, also pretended to be oblivious.
"Great, you’re all in this together," Wu Damming finally realized.
Zhang Xiaoshan looked at Wu Damming and said with a cold chuckle,
"Don’t talk like that; you are the criminal. ’In this together’ better suits you. I’m not in the mood for your nonsense. Where did the money go?"
"What money? I don’t know!"
Wu Damming shook his head, feigning ignorance, clearly unwilling to cooperate.
"This old bastard’s tough to crack; we interrogated him all night and still couldn’t get anything out of him," a worker complained irritably.
"Tough nut?"
Zhang Xiaoshan smiled at Wu Damming.
Stubbornness was not unusual among the old men in the village.
Wu Damming clenched his teeth and said to Zhang Xiaoshan,
"You little rat, I hit a streak of bad luck ending up in your hands, but I won’t say anything. Don’t dream about it."
"I advise you not to waste your effort on me."
Zhang Xiaoshan smiled at Wu Damming, a devilish gleam in his eye.
"Wu Damming, do you believe I can go back to the village and incite the villagers to dig up your parents’ graves?"
"Oh, and I should also speak to the Wu family elders about having your parents’ names removed from the family shrine."
"You, you dare!"
Wu Damming’s eyes instantly reddened.
He looked as if he was ready to fight Zhang Xiaoshan, but being chained to the chair, he couldn’t move.
"Forget it, if you don’t want to talk, I won’t force you. Stay put; I’m going back to the village."
"You know the ways of our village folk quite well. You’ll bear the consequences."
With that, Zhang Xiaoshan walked toward the door.
One step.
Two steps.
Wu Damming’s face was now filled with panic and turmoil.
Being an old relic, he took clan traditions very seriously. If his parents’ memorials were thrown out of the family shrine and their graves desecrated, it would be more distressing than if he were killed.
He knew well that this wasn’t an empty threat from Zhang Xiaoshan; the villagers were capable of doing it.
"Wait!"
Just as Zhang Xiaoshan reached the door, Wu Damming finally called out to stop him.
"Speak quickly if you’re willing and cut the crap," Zhang Xiaoshan said, turning back with an intense gaze.
"I, I, wuu—" Wu Damming suddenly bowed his head and began to cry.
"I, I didn’t intend to run away, I was cheated, I lost all the money gambling, and I had to run."
"What, you lost all the money gambling?" Zhang Xiaoshan truly lost his temper, grabbing Wu Damming by the throat as if to strangle him.
Seeing the situation escalating, Luo Yihua, standing to the side, hurriedly said to Zhang Xiaoshan,
"Brother Zhang, I can overlook a couple of slaps to vent your anger, but if it leads to a fatality, that would be troublesome for me."
Zhang Xiaoshan took a deep breath and released Wu Damming,
"Explain yourself clearly—exactly how did things happen? If there’s any chance of recovery, maybe I can plead on your behalf."
By then, Wu Damming’s spirit had completely broken and he tearfully confessed everything.
