Chapter 76: A Meltdown

Murong Xie’s face turned sour as he saw Han Yu.

"That kid..." he gritted his teeth, fury bubbling under his skin. "Ugh!" he groaned—only to immediately wince as a sharp ache shot through his jaw.

Han Yu’s punch might have only knocked out two of his front teeth, but the others had taken emotional damage. They were still painfully sensitive, and biting down too hard felt like chewing lightning. He tried to calm down for now, knowing his opportunity for revenge would come soon.

’Now that I’m an Indigo talent disciple, that kid’s time is short,’ Murong Xie told himself with smug satisfaction.

He was confident—no, absolutely certain—that Han Yu wouldn’t get the same ranking. At most, he’d be Green Rank, or maybe even Blue if the heavens were feeling particularly drunk that day. But Indigo? No way. All those with high talents had high cultivation—and Han Yu, well... Han Yu had vibes.

So, the boy grinned, or at least tried to—his missing teeth made it more of a lopsided grimace.

"Go collect your reward," Elder Nie Jing stated.

"Yes, Elder." The boy replied, puffing up like a proud rooster.

"Mine!"

"He’ll be mine!"

"Shut it! He’s joining my peak!"

And just as he was about to step down from the dais, a crowd of ragged, huffing elders burst into the arena like toddlers fighting over the last dumpling.

They were shoving, tripping, and—at one point—someone definitely tried to elbow someone else in the kidney. Their robes were wrinkled, their hair frazzled, and one even had a twig sticking out of his beard. The whole scene looked less like noble sect elders and more like a drunken brawl at a family reunion.

Murong Xie blinked in disbelief.

These were the high and mighty elders of the sect? The untouchables? The wise?

’Yes... this is what I deserve.’ Internally, though, the boy was glowing with smug satisfaction.

Seeing that their melee was gathering far too much attention (and not the good kind), Murong Xie stepped forward.

"Honored Elders, I will speak with each of you. Please, there’s no need to fight." He said this with the serene dignity of a diplomat—one missing a few teeth, but a diplomat nonetheless.

"Ahem!"

"Of course."

"Such... manners."

Realizing they were being watched by hundreds of students and other elders, the squabbling seniors cleared their throats, straightened their robes, and pretended they hadn’t just been trying to stab each other with formation fans.

"Come, we’ll discuss this in private." One of the elders declared as they all latched onto Murong Xie and briskly dragged him away like treasure on a clearance sale.

As much as the boy wanted to stay and see what Han Yu’s talent ended up being, he decided it wasn’t worth the emotional damage. The very sight of Han Yu was enough to make his teeth itch (the ones he still had).

’It’s not like I won’t find out later anyway,’ he reasoned, far more interested in getting healed, pampered, and possibly adopted by three peak masters.

Meanwhile, Han Yu sat on the ground, rocking back and forth like a man whose soul had just taken psychic damage.

’Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,’ Han Yu internally screamed. ’This is not how it was supposed to go. The heavens have forsaken me!’

Xu Qing, watching him spiral, couldn’t help but sigh. She would’ve offered some words of comfort, but considering the nuclear meltdown happening inside his brain, she doubted anything would help.

’He really did offend the two Indigo talents who are probably going to become Legacy Disciples...’ she thought grimly.

It wasn’t like Han Yu had defeated them honorably and earned grudging respect. Oh no. He had committed full-on social war crimes.

The first got punched in the family jewels—no one comes back from that with grace. The second had his teeth knocked out, post-spit-in-face combo. The humiliation level was so high it could register as a cultivation realm.

’Gao Ren might still be okay, but Murong Xie... that one’s a revenge drama waiting to happen,’ Xu Qing thought.

Gao Ren was a muscle-brained commoner who had nothing to lose and everything to gain. He might actually forget about the whole thing by lunchtime.

But Murong Xie? He was the Prodigal Son™ of a proper cultivation clan. A true young master. The kind who carried petty grudges the way other people carried spirit stones.

SIGH

’Han Yu’s only hope is to get decent cultivation and cling to the robes of a strong elder. Maybe one with low standards and a soft heart,’ Xu Qing mused.

Even she didn’t dare hope Han Yu might be Indigo Ranked. That was just delusional. In her hundred years at the sect, she hadn’t seen a single new Indigo Rank.

She herself was Green Ranked, and the competition among disciples was already brutal. The higher the talent, the higher the arrogance—and Han Yu was walking into a lion’s den wearing pork-scented robes.

’He’s gonna suffer.’ She almost felt bad. Almost.

At least she’d be getting her reward for bringing him in.

’He should at least be Green Rank, right?’ she thought hopefully.

As if the universe had heard her, Elder Nie Jing’s voice thundered out.

"Final recruit, Han Yu!"

The tone held the exact amount of fondness reserved for foot fungus.

Elder Nie Jing glared at the boy still rocking himself on the floor like a traumatized squirrel.

’Tch~ Already losing his composure,’ the elder sneered, as if his opinion of Han Yu could sink any lower. Spoiler: it did.

But even after ten seconds, Han Yu didn’t budge.

"HAN YU!" the elder bellowed, feeling utterly disrespected.

Xu Qing did what any good friend would do—she kicked him.

"Get up! It’s your turn!" she barked.

"My turn?" Han Yu mumbled, blinking dumbly. He slowly became aware of the sea of eyes locked onto him.

"...Crap. They’re all watching." Han Yu stumbled.

GULP

He tried to swallow his fear. It didn’t go down. It just lodged in his throat like a sticky dumpling.
