Chapter 151: Walking Into Danger
Rosa had been feeling like there was something seriously wrong from the moment she laid eyes on Jason! The first time they met, Rosa could tell that Jason was only an A Rank. His power and mana had given off the aura of an A Rank, so there was no doubt that they were at the same level of strength. But now that she was seeing him again, Rosa was no longer sure if she could believe her own senses. Because unlike before when Jason was only a low-level A Rank, Rosa was now certain that Jason was far stronger than that! He had to be at least an S Rank!
But it just didn’t make any sense!
Superhumans didn’t grow at such an absurd rate, and there was certainly no way a superhuman who awakened only a few days ago would get this strong this quickly! Jason’s power level now was far beyond what Rosa had felt, and there was no doubt that he was stronger than both she and her brother! Rosa had been trying to find any reasonable explanation all this time. She even tried to see if she had made a mistake in sensing Jason’s power, but there was no doubt about it. She was certain that Jason was now an S Rank!
Rosa immediately told her brother what she felt from Jason and warned him that they should call off the plan, but Ricardo was not having any of that. He had been waiting for this chance for long enough and he wasn’t going to change everything just because of a ’feeling’.
"Just focus on the mission and make sure you don’t make any mistakes. Who cares if he is stronger now? There are two of us and one of him, and our Gifts are more than enough to cover any gaps in strength. Focus."
Ricardo turned to give his sister a glare and she mellowed out and ducked her head before nodding along. She wanted to tell Ricardo that they were making a mistake by going into this without getting more information, but she was not bold enough to speak back to her brother and she could only look away meekly while following his orders. Besides, even though she was worried, she also knew that her brother was right about their Gifts covering any gaps in strength. As long as they don’t make any mistakes, the missions should still go smoothly!
Jason watched the siblings from the other side of the room and he frowned while wondering what they were talking about. But his attention was dragged away as Keith came to stand close to him. Keith spoke up in a low tone so that only he and Jason could hear what was said.
"You’ve grown stronger."
These were the first words Keith said and Jason just hummed without bothering to comment. Keith eyes Jason for a few seconds before turning back to glance at the twins with narrowed eyes.
"I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but you should be careful in there."
Jason hummed.
"You can’t do anything about it?"
Jason asked this in a curious tone and Keith grimaced slightly.
"No, the director was adamant about the groupings, so you’ll be paired with them. My brother tried pulling some strings to allow me to join the group, but the director was thorough about not allowing any Enforcer into assessments."
Jason’s eyes narrowed.
"If they attack me, you know I’ll kill everyone involved, don’t you?"
Keith gave Jason a hard look before he turned away. Keith was not going to stand there and tell Jason that he was not within his rights to be angry, but that didn’t mean Keith could condone killing anyone. It would be better to let the law handle things.
"Liam is working on the legal proceedings, but we can’t do anything unless they act out of line. If you speak up now, then the SMMd will put the assessment on hold for possible endangerment."
Keith had actually come here with a plan in mind to stop the assessment from happening. From what Keith felt the last time he met with Jason, he knew that Ricardo and Rosa were both as strong - if not stronger - than Jason was. But Keith had stopped his plan after he sensed the new level of power Jason wielded. It was completely different from what Keith sensed last time, and Keith could tell that Jason was now stronger than the siblings.
This simple fact was what made KEiht wait and watch to see how things play out. Keith knew how important this assessment was for most of these new awakeners and he didn’t want to stop the assessment unless there was a real risk of Jason getting hurt.
Jason gave the twins a critical look while asking.
"You think they can hurt me?"
"I don’t know. I’ve never seen them fight before, finding out their Gifts is above my clearance. But from the looks of things, they’re experienced in battle."
Jason eyed the siblings for a moment before he smiled.
"There’s no need to stop the assessment. If we stop them now, then they’ll just try again some other time. Besides, I’d like to talk to them face-to-face to find out who’s behind them, and I wouldn’t want anyone to stop me from getting the information I want."
Keith’s eyes narrowed.
"If you kill them in cold blood, then I will come for you."
"Cold blood? No, no. It’s nothing like that. This is called self-defense, Mr. Enforcer."
Jason’s smile became dangerous and before Keith could say anything else, Naomi spoke up again.
"We’ll call out your names in groups of three and the agent that will be in charge of your assessment. When you hear your name, gather up with your group members."
Naomi brought out a clipboard to begin calling out names and the teenagers all shuffled about nervously as they waited for their names to be called.
At the side, Henry was standing with his arms folded and his eyes narrowed in concentration. There was a nervousness in his body as he waited for his name to be called and he prayed to every god out there that he wouldn’t somehow be paired up with Jason.
"Henry Ford."
Naomi called his name and Henry jolted slightly in surprise. He looked over at where Naomi was pointing and he nodded before heading towards the pair of agents standing there. Naomi looked at the clipboard and then called out,
"Darren White."
Henry snorted as the chubby boy grinned happily and headed over to stand beside him. Henry didn’t really care about the boy and didn’t mind having him on his team so long as he could pull his own weight! The only person that Henry cared about was Jason! Henry prayed to all the gods up there! Please don’t let him be part of his team! Please! He couldn’t have—
"Jason Marc."
Fuck!
The room grew silent all of a sudden as everyone turned to look at Henry and Henry realized in shock that he had actually shouted out that curse! He flushed in slight embarrassment before composing himself and looking away calmly. The room slowly moved back into motion and Naomi directed Jason to where Darren and Henry were standing.
Jason walked over and nodded to Henry before he raised a brow as Darren shouted loudly how excited he was to be doing the assessment with his ’boss’!
Henry put all his effort into making sure that he and Jason didn’t interact at all and he ended up just watching as Naomi called out the other names. Once she was done calling out the names, Naomi told the instructors to go to their students and Henry raised a brow when he saw two agents coming towards them. Every other group had one, but there were two for them?
"Bratza, young ones! My name is Ricardo and this here is my sister, Rosa! We’re going to have a lot of fun together!"
Henry could immediately tell that the male instructor, Ricardo, was a lot more expressive and jovial than his sister. He spoke with a slight Mexican accent, but he had an American appearance, so Henry could only guess that he had lived in Mexico for some time. The other member of the pair, the woman named Rosa, was far more reserved and she didn’t give anything more than a simple nod as a greeting.
