Chapter 308: Battle Hungry
Chapter 308: Battle Hungry
"What the hell is up with him...?"
"Creep..."
The ghosts at the front of Les Murmures avoided him like the plague. Behind his back, they taunted him. Dasha never paid it any mind until today.
Today when the world felt so, so wonderful.
"Do ghosts such as yourselves understand the concept of death?"
His question was pointed. It caught the dozen spirits by surprise. Puzzled glances of fear followed.
"I see. I am glad I am able to offer that to you."
When he walked away, this time, there was no one to taunt him.
Dasha opened the door and entered the mansion. His presence was immediately noted by those loitering at the lounge. The Whispers were known for their intelligence gathering, not strength.
The player that should have been a newbie did not feel like one. A foreboding chill went down their spines. Fear, tension, and the thought of death, if only for an instant. There was no killing intent. There was only the intent to be superior. The intent to let them know they were in the presence of a greater one.
No one said a word as Dasha walked up the stairs. The cats that ran amok did not once get in his way. The door to Daughter remained. He uttered the words of old and the door dissipated. Daughter awaited, seated on the hammock, elbow on her thigh and palm holding up her face.
She was smiling. The black lines running up her sun-kissed face were bent from her smile.
"It’s been a while. I was beginning to worry that you died." Daughter’s eyes scanned his form and her smile widened. "That’s a good look in your eye. You are teetering between rage and peace."
Dasha did not respond.
"The mask broke," Daughter stated. She hummed and sarcastically said, "I wonder how..."
"I encountered Thales."
"I know you did." Daughter leaned back till she was lying down flat and the hammock swayed. "You might have set several precautions but I know you never would have willingly stayed there for a month. The only Administrator that would set-up a trick like that is Thales."
"You know him."
You know them.
"There exist ten, although only nine are regarded as true Administrators. Care to guess who was not considered among them?" Dasha did not respond so Daughter went to say, "Thales the Father of Mortal Rebellion. Ironic, isn’t it? They say the greatest creation of the gods is the Heavenly Tower yet Thales was among the ones responsible for its greatness."
"Tell me," Dasha said, "has Xavier been following my plans?"
The sudden switch in topics earned a curious look from Daughter. "To a tee. He is a very clinical man. Do you want me to call him?"
"I shall see to him and the work myself." Dasha turned his back on her, only to stop. "The contingencies I set are in place. However, I understand it was not easy. Give me a name."
"A name...?" Daughter lifted herself by the elbows. The puzzlement was soon replaced by surprise. "Oh, a name."
"It is what I promised."
"Battle hungry, aren’t you? I didn’t expect to send you out this early." Smiling, Daughter summoned a black and white photograph in her hand and flipped it toward Dasha. "Do you know who this is?"
Holding up a sword trophy and plastered with a smile that was bright enough to bring colour and joy was a teenage boy. His black hair had abnormal streaks of pink.
"The House of Yngling’s outcast son from a generation ago," Dasha said. "That trophy...he was a runner-up for the Arc of the Grand Master Swordsman Junior Edition."
"He goes by Raoul now," Daughter replied, tossing it aside. Landing on the floor, the photograph disappeared. "Because of his heritage, he and his little guild—the Monster Hunters—are known for selling their services and killing monsters at Valhalla’s Colosseum. His expertise is so great, he often is hired as a teacher to the children of the Great Noble Families. When it comes to monsters, he cannot be surpassed. There is not a weak point he does not know."
He heard and read about it. He eavesdropped on Raoul once at the bar. He didn’t look much different than in his youth, save for the ugly cut on his bottom lip.
"Raoul is said to have a journal containing the weaknesses of every monster he’s encountered. I heard his brother, the head of the Yngling family, wants him back solely because of his knowledge. That, Saucy Jack, is where you come in. Kill him, his little band of hunters, and take the journal."
"Is Raoul their strongest?"
"He has been trying to reach Class Six since, well, forever. He lacks the talent his family is known for and tries to make up for it with intuition and experience. He fought in the Heavenly War and thinks like a commander. So in the grand scheme of strength, he isn’t very special. But when it comes to being a Guild Master? It would be hard to find a better man. He can rally people to his side with a single speech. He can convince the most hopeless into fighting the worst of monsters. When you fight him or any one of his hunters, expect resistance till the bitter end."
"A nuisance then." Dasha turned.
"Their strength is in their numbers and loyalty. In total, there are two hundred of them. Seven of them, his most elite squad, are high-tier Class Fives like Raoul himself. Luckily, they are out hunting. You won’t have to fight them."
"It doesn’t matter."
"You’re raring to go, eh? Not a moment of rest, you’re right back to fighting. I suppose that is why I chose you. I have an excellent anti-magic weapon prepared—"
"No need," Dasha said.
"Oh?"
She expected him to explain. He didn’t and consequently the door to exit did not appear. From Daughter’s direction, he heard a sizzling sound.
"I care little for how it is done but I do have stipulations: don’t get caught. Use Sigurd’s cloak. And most of all, do not spare a single one of them. Kill them all." The sizzling noise continued and Dasha finally peered over his shoulder from the side of his exposed eye.
Blood was dripping from Daughter’s finger, connecting to a hieroglyphic written magic circle. The floating imagery of scarlet red roared.
"My Hieracosphinx will supervise you. Do not worry, he will keep himself out of sight until you signal him."
A low growl reverberated through the chamber, and with a flash of crimson light, the Hieracosphinx spawned. It was an imposing creature, with the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. Hieroglyphic markings covered its body, glowing faintly. Its eyes were a piercing, unnatural yellow, glowing with an inner light that seemed to see through flesh and bone and it regarded Dasha with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.
The Hieracosphinx bowed its head slightly to Daughter, then turned back, only to see Dasha was gone.
