Chapter 285: Fating’ho Trap

Chapter 285: Fating’ho Trap

Kazi clicked his tongue and muttered, "Astaghfirullah..."

"Brother, back away!"

An arrow whizzed by him, striking the first of the Fating’ho. There was a cry, then rage. Another flew through the air. The Fating’ho smashed it down. That began their assault. Six high-level apes that wanted to kill the closest human to them: Kazi Hossain.

Kazi...

’That arrow struck the ape from behind.’ Kazi glanced over his shoulder, ignoring the black ape humanoids charging at him.

Seeing his sudden shift in attention, Remmy lowered his bow and screamed, "Look out!"

All cool, all casually, he took a step forward, slipping underneath a wild punch, grabbed the Fating’ho by the skull, and slammed the creature into the ground with bone-jarring force. Then he glared at the rest, left eye pulsing. Magical energy crackled from his sword which shifted as he stared at them. Hazel and blue eyes. Godly power. They didn’t understand it. They couldn’t. Their red eyes widened in terror as they became acutely aware of their own mortality in the face of this apex predator.

The chain of command in the woodlands flipped itself. Instinct screamed at them to flee, to run as far and as fast as their legs could carry them. Every fiber of their being begged for escape from the terrifying presence that loomed before them. They were going to die. They were going to be devoured.

And so, with trembling desperate limps, the Fating’ho turned and fled.

Kazi narrowed his eyes. Remmy stepped up next to him, swallowing thickly. He glanced at him but Kazi didn’t glance back.

"That was...intense."

The archer was talking about his glare, not the monsters.

"Sorry." His grimace dropped and he smiled. "That arrow..."

"Didn’t come from me," Remmy said. "That came elsewhere. But where?"

’I tried looking into the future to get an approximate of where this mystery archer shot from. Unfortunately, it is not close enough. Several kilometers is my guess. If I look at the corpse and the where the arrow was embedded...’ Kazi followed the arrow in a predictable straight line. He adjusted for angles and the wind. ’Hrm. Twelve possible angles depending on the wind current.’

"How come you decided to spare them?" Remmy asked. "Think they have something to do with the special or hidden objective?"

"I think so. When the Fating’ho communicated in sign language, that’s when I knew something was up."

"Yeah, that was strange."

"A human must have taught them."

"You think so? What if they just evolved that way?"

"They were using LSL specifically," Kazi clarified. "French sign language. Senegal might be officially French speaking but that’s only legally speaking. Almost everyone in Senegal speaks Wolof. The System translates languages in real-time for us, so some people can’t tell. Luckily, from time to time, there are glitches in lip syncing. I can tell the Yumboes are speaking Wolof, the commonly spoken language in the country. The Fating’ho are speaking a French sign language."

"So...someone from the outside taught the Fating’ho?"

"I remember hearing a story about the Fating’ho when I was there in my old life," Kazi said. "The locals told me that a hunter captured a female fating’ho and had children with her. Their daughter was named Na Fancani who later had her own descendants. But since the tower is known to strip directly from folktales..."

"You think the boss is going to be Na Fancani or her descendants who learned French?"

"Precisely. The fingers of the Fating’ho were long but their thumbs were short. It was similar to the hands of Chimpanzees who are sturdy but lack precision grasping. Shooting arrows is going to be difficult for a normal Fating’ho. There’s no doubt in my mind that the creature that shot the Fating’ho was not one of their own. It had to be a very human creature."

Remmy and Kazi stared at the looming woodlands, dark and eerie. "If a human-like creature is in there, they know the forest better than all of us combined. They have the advantage. If they’re a Mini Boss, it’s going to be a big problem. We should warn the others."

"You go," Kazi said. "I’ll keep an eye here."

"Take care, brother."

He smiled and nodded. That was when the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. His neck twisted back. Over the pap hill, Kazi saw smoke rising. Closing his eyes, he sensed various dark energies. "Wait, I’m going instead."

"Huh—"

"I think someone messed up. I’ll be back."

Kazi dashed off. ’Me and Remmy are south. The swirling energies are north-east...’

Shit, shit. Mana filled him up. The configurations were terrible, he knew that advance. But because of his belief in them, because he thought that they would synchronize in time, this happened. Kazi arrived to screams and blood. A scene where the blood of the Yumboes were spilled.
