Chapter 282: Night 1 Mess Up

"Kaziiii! Coumaaaa!"

A short elf in a fulani braid was running toward them from the east. She was boosted by the wind, a long leap occasionally breaking the run. Couma met up with her.

"What happened?"

"I-it’s the village! The Booas have infiltrated!" the Yumbo said.

"Someone messed up," Kazi stated. "Stay here. I’m going."

Kazi ran. Behind him, Pauline and Couma called out for him to wait. He couldn’t, not when lives were in jeopardy. He filled himself with his mana and propelled forward at speeds a partridge would find ludicrous. A magnitude of speed that allowed him to cross from south to west in seconds.

The hyenas were there. They had entered the range of the village, of the tables and campfires. Off at the perimeter, shoulder pouring out scarlet, was Jackson with Sylvia tending to him.

’Emma and Sarah...where are they?’

"Super Spark Strike!" Kazi proclaimed, catching the attention of the players. There were only two Booas to kill. In one fell swoop, he dragged his blade across their necks and finished them. What remained were their decaying bodies and flickers of lighting.

"Phew." Stormedge in hand, he walked up to Jackson and Sylvia. Jackson was sitting upright and clutching his drenched shoulder, surrounded by six elves. Sylvia stood closeby. She looked relieved to see him.

"Yeah, I lost my staff," Sylvia said. She sighed and took out a bottle from her inventory "And the elves, well..."

Kazi looked to the left. Two were dead. He inhaled sharply. Going past Sylvia, he approached Jackson and pointed his blade at him. Sylvia’s bottle nearly fell from her fingers.

"Wha—"

"Divine Miracle Water."

A blue layer of water appeared on Jackson’s injury, quickly melding and healing into it. Jackson stomached the pain and sighed once it was over. "Thank you."

"Mind telling me what happened?"

Jackson’s gaze wavered for less than a second. "...I messed up and got too close." Nearby, Sylvia drank her bottle and audibly gulped.

"I see. And Sylvia, what couldn’t you cover?" Kazi shifted over to the drinking lady. Sylvia didn’t meet his gaze.

"They were too fast," Jackson replied in her stead. "Sorry about that."

The Booas were close in level so buying that sorry excuse of a story wasn’t too ridiculous. Kazi offered Jackson a hand and helped him up. He purposely did not immediately release his hand, getting Jackson to look at his knowing smile. Because yes, he knew. He deduced what happened. It was obvious.

Jackson slipped from the grip as soon as he could. Kazi glanced over at the dead Yumboes. Their bodies were fusing into the earths.

"We Yumboes are like the dead yet live as though we are living," said the Yumboe. "We are sad but we were already said to be dead."

"You’re reincarnations of humans," Kazi stated.

"We have no memories, only the vaguest sensation of life’s emotions. That is why we live the way we do. We live to make our past lives proud."

"I see."

Kazi could respect that. Getting on one knee, he watched the two Yumboes turn into particles and fall into the ground. His smile was soft. "I hope wherever life takes you next that it will be better."

Sarah and Emma’s voices finally came within earshot. The battle was already over. They were at the other side of the hill, patrolling together. Kazi waited for them with his arms crossed and his smile almost flat, disappointed in them as if he were their father.

"Next time, patrol separately. You’ll cover more ground."

"S-sorry," Sarah said, hanging her head.

Emma looked disappointed in herself. "Sorry, sir."

"No need for the sir stuff. As long as you know."

Emma extended an arm. Kazi raised a brow. Opening the palm, Emma said, "Might be bad timing but you look like you need gum."

"...sure."

Much to Pauline’s relief in the west, a third wave of monsters did not attack either. Tonight, they were safe.
