Sun-young was seeing something from the System, though she didn’t comprehend what. Her brain was empty, her vision blurry and her legs trembling as blood trickled down from her chest to her feet.
That was when it happened. Her healing factor kicked in, Stamina Surge Lv. 2 booted up, and her wound thinned. Like needles sewing her up, she found the blur disappearing. She found strength that came from fear. The word unworthy rang in her head and she charged at Jack while powering up a skill.
"Distortion Slash!"
A turn and a quick swipe with his rapier.
Clang!
She made it. She made it! Jack was forced to switch from slitting Marta’s throat to meeting Sun-young in a mighty clash.
"You have a strong desire to save your friends, Sun-young. What, is it because your own life was miserable, pathetic, and lonely? Do you think your friends can save you from that same loneliness?"
’Left swing!’
She stepped-back and slash! Jack missed. Her instincts zoomed in on his left side. The side that was missing a wrist. Jack leaned into it, mana running through it, and...counter! Just as she anticipated, his first strike was a feint and he was in actuality using his left side.
"Impressive focus. You’re not listening to me, are you? You just want to save your friend."
Jack cackled and the golden rapier glowed with an otherworldly energy. Sun-young backed off, narrowly avoiding the black lightning, diving and rolling as it chased after her. She crawled and leaped and accidentally grabbed onto a piece of clothing from a corpse.
She didn’t think. She summoned all her strength and hurled the corpse back, the black lightning incinerating it into ashes. She kept leaping, kept throwing bodies, her gaze flickering towards Marta.
Run, run, climb, craw!
Live!
She had to save Marta at all costs. She had to buy time and find a way to beat this sick bastard. Marta tried till her body broke apart.
’I can’t give up. I have to be like her, fight till the very end. Don’t give up like you did before.’ Her muscles ached and several portions of the bones in her arms were shattered. She hated giving up. She didn’t want to give up ever again. She didn’t want her life to end like it did before. ’I have friends now! I can’t just—ngh!’
Her knee scraped across the ground. The lightning nearly latched onto her.
The needles were returning. The healing, the burning...!
She circled behind Jack, crawling and jumping and ignoring the morals of her behaviour. Suddenly, the black lightning stopped. She pushed herself up, ignoring the twisted pain in her ankles, and charged at him. Her katana nearly shattered at the ensuing clash of metal.
"Yoon Sun-young...I see now. Your life was a total waste. How sad."
Sun-young’s eyes blackened.
Jack began meeting her strikes with superior vigour. In all their previous duels, he put in enough power to label it a struggle between equals. One strike, two strikes, three strikes....
’Fuckfuckfuck!’
The fourth strike slipped under her, redirected by a single degree by her katana. To read his movements that far ahead, to calculate that her blade would only budge him by a degree and yet still dodging it, it was inhumane.
But so was Jack. His missed rapier went into a stronger strike that Sun-young was forced to fully parry.
’His blade is so fucking heavy that it takes all the energy in my body to parry it!’
He was going faster and harder, the metal in the rapier rendering Majin-ken a mere toy. Her knees were buckling. Tears went down her face as she tried harder and harder.
’I don’t want to die! I don’t want Marta to die! So please...’
Snap!
The upper half of Majin-ken was hurled away in a sweeping swing. Sun-young stood there, panting, bloody, and desperate. She lowered her katana, unable to conjure up an ounce of energy.
’Why...won’t you leave us alone?’ The tears kept falling, her eyes and arms falling. ’Why...why won’t you die?’ She squeezed her eyes shut, the tears trapped. In the haze of darkness and hopelessness, she prayed. She begged for god. She wept for a miracle. ’Please...just this once...! God, help me.’
