Chapter 89: Magic Core
Chapter 89: Magic Core
Magic cores.
Magic cores were cores that were formed by the magic beasts and it was basically used by them to store their magic. Lower ranked magic beasts couldn’t use magic well and the core was usually non elemental. But after rank 3, these magic beasts could use magic and their cores also changed colors.
The magic beasts at rank 1 and 2 could be found easily around the field not far from Wansu City. If they wanted to, they could actually hunt those when they were still in the academy.
Back then, Silas did bring Aya and the others to hunt.
But they only targeted rank 1 magic beast, which was stupid and easy to hunt. Of course, the main reason for them to hunt these was to eat.
Magic beasts ranking was similar to mana’s ranking.
So for mage and magic warriors who could use third rank magic, they were more or less evenly matched with rank 3 magic beasts.
Of course, this was only tentative.
And these magic cores were also ranked based on the mana inside.
The magic cores were usually used to make some specific potion and the elemental cores could even help to promote the growth of a magician’s mana. However, they couldn’t absorb the mana from the beast cores directly.
Unless they wanted to die.
The mana inside the beast core was too violent.
There were many methods to extract the mana from inside but usually only an alchemist could do it.
No one would be stupid enough to absorb the mana directly from a beast core unless they wanted to die. There were also some magic tools that used magic cores to transmit magic but making it was not easy.
Wansu City has their own regulations.
Higher ranked magic cores were strictly controlled and normally, ordinary people would never have a chance to get it.
Silas naturally knew about this.
So when he saw the magic core, he could guess that it should be the private possession of the Black Family. If it belonged to the city, there was no way the Black Family Patriarch would be willing to hand it over to him so easily.
"Patriarch, this..." Silas was stunned and looked up to see Patriarch Black looking in his direction directly. The gaze from Patriarch Black seemed to say that he should just accept this magic core.
Most magic warriors in Wansu City were only rank 4. There were some occasional rank 5 magic warriors and these were all without doubts the powerful ones in their family.
When the students graduated, they usually would only be rank 3.
Some of them, such as the Green Family, were the anomaly because their mana was more than their peers. But it didn’t mean they were much stronger than the others since the Green Family’s magic were often support or control type rather than attacking.
Rank 6 was very rare.
It could be said that only the patriarchs could reach rank 6.
Because what truly defined a magician to reach rank 6 was not only their amount of mana but also their precise control and the mana that has been compressed. The vast amount of mana would cause a burden to their body, so when it reached rank 5, they had to start learning how to compress it.
The textbook told him that when they reached rank 7, the compression would be even more ridiculous because the power of a magic warrior at rank 7 was simply on a different level compared to rank 6 magician.
"Find an alchemist to absorb the mana inside. You’ve reached rank 4 a few years ago and I believed that you should reach the threshold to reach rank 5 soon," the Black Family Patriarch said. "The mana after extraction would be reduced, but it should be enough for you to reach rank 5 faster."
Is it really that easy?
If Silas had been an ordinary child, he might think that the Black Family Patriarch was giving this for his good and that it was truly his reward.
But...
He knew very well that it was not.
Silas looked at the core in his hand and then bowed. "Thank you, Patriarch."
"You may go now."
After giving the magic core, the Black Family Patriarch didn’t want to see Silas anymore. He had to figure out a way to make his son stronger so that he could become the future Black Family Patriarch. But Leon’s performance so far has been disappointing.
At this moment, the Black Family Patriarch has started to think whether he should change his target.
For example...
His daughter?
But this needed him to observe a while longer because these two children were still young.
As for Silas?
While the Black Family Patriarch was wary of his nephew, he would not do anything so outrageous blatantly. At most, he would do some things in secret against him.
On the surface, the Black Family Patriarch was still the same patriarch who was very good and all. After all, he gave this to Silas as a gift.
It would have been more perfect if there were audiences who saw his kindness.
But It was not necessary right now.
Silas could see the Black Family Patriarch’s eyes were not very kind but he said nothing. He still accepted the magic core.
With that, Silas walked out of Black Family Patriarch’s residence holding a magic scroll. His eyes flickered slightly.
He could guess what the patriarch wanted to do...
But is it really necessary?
He never had any intention to aim for the Black Family Patriarch’s position.
No matter who will become the Black Family Patriarch in the future, it would not be him and could not be him.
With some thoughts in his mind, Silas made his way back home and found his mother had returned. She was resting in her room and it seemed that her condition had worsened again.
Silas’s eyes were gloomy and he took a deep breath before walking to his own room.
With a wave of his hand, he unsealed the magic core.
The magic cores have to be refined by an alchemist before being used and the refining process of a magic core would undoubtedly cause some loss in the middle. But this was the cost that they had to bear since they couldn’t afford to absorb the mana directly.
The most skilled alchemist could cause no loss.
But there was no such alchemist in the entire Wansu City.
Moreover, the refining process itself would take a long time and may even take days for higher ranked magic cores because of the large amount of mana inside.
There were also some methods that could be used to extract the mana by themselves but most ordinary magic warriors would not do it because the loss was more than 50%. It was not cost effective at all and it would be better to ask for an alchemist help.
However...
’I’m afraid I can’t do the same as what you wished, Patriarch.’
Silas’s eyes changed slightly and the white part turned completely black before the shadow spread out from below and covered the entire room. The magic core in his hand trembled and the mana was slowly diminishing at speed visible to the naked eyes.
Before long, the entire magic core disappeared and Silas closed his eyes, the shadow retracted back into him.
He opened his eyes again and everything was normal as if nothing had ever happened.
