Strange Life of a Cat -
Chapter 429 - Chapter 429 406
Chapter 429: 406 Chapter 429: 406 Zheng Tan tilted his head to the side, signaling Pei Jie to follow, and then lifted the unsecured canvas and crawled out.
Pei Jie also followed through the canvas, making a bit more noise as he went, but fortunately, he wasn’t as big as an adult, managing to squeeze through. Once outside, he didn’t forget to take the gun with him.
Zheng Tan led the way, with Pei Liang carefully following behind. He knew that his hearing couldn’t compare to Zheng Tan’s, so he simply followed silently, without doubting Zheng Tan’s judgment.
Zheng Tan remembered the location where he had taken down those men, and now he just needed to avoid those spots and lead Pei Jie away.
As they were walking, Zheng Tan suddenly stopped, his ears twitched, and he looked in the direction of the front-left.
Seeing Zheng Tan’s reaction, Pei Jie quickly found a place to hide, thinking that Zheng Tan had spotted an enemy.
Zheng Tan didn’t give any directions to Pei Jie, but instead quickly climbed up a nearby tree to look in that direction. Although there were many trees of varying heights blocking the view, he could still see several moving figures, with a patch of brownish-yellow leading them.
Feeling a surge of joy, Zheng Tan decided not to move forward anymore and lay on a branch, watching that direction.
Pei Jie, hiding behind the bushes, was puzzled by Zheng Tan’s reaction, but soon he came up with a possibility.
“Heitan!” Pei Jie called out softly, and seeing Zheng Tan look over, he continued, “Is it my dad and the others? Have they come?”
Zheng Tan thought for a moment and nodded.
“Ha!” Pei Jie couldn’t help laughing out loud, darting out of the bushes, and he climbed up the tree that Zheng Tan had ascended.
When Pei Liang ran over with his heart in his throat, he saw that rascal Pei Jie, with a rifle on his back, hugging the trunk of a tree and looking at them, grinning from ear to ear.
Pei Jie’s clothes were dirty and disheveled, and his little face, tanned from playing recklessly under the sun, was smeared with mud and bits of grass, and his hair was a mess, looking like he had been through a flight from disaster. Pei Liang’s eyes watered at the sight, and he rushed over to catch Pei Jie, who had jumped down from the tree, holding him tightly in his arms.
Seeing that Pei Jie was healthy and whole, though looking a bit wretched but unharmed and in good spirits, Ermao and Wei Leng both breathed a sigh of relief. Wei Leng sent a quick message back to the elderly at home to ease their worries but didn’t elaborate; he knew the situation was complicated.
“It’s good that you’re safe.” Pei Liang said with some choking up, taking several deep breaths before he could calm down. After settling his emotions, Pei Liang first checked Pei Jie for injuries, seeing that they were just minor scrapes, and felt relieved. He handed some food to Pei Jie and applied some medicine to his small wounds before finally asking, “What about the people who took you? How did you manage to escape?”
Pei Jie wiped his nose on Pei Liang’s clothes, then raised his hand and pointed towards the tree.
Pei Liang looked up and saw a familiar black cat lying there.
Ermao and Wei Leng had a look of “as expected”, but they were still very curious about how it all happened.
When asked, Pei Jie was somewhat conflicted, wondering whether to speak or not.
“Let’s first look for the people who took Pei Jie,” Ermao suggested.
To find the people, they would need Zheng Tan to lead the way.
Ermao told Dashan to rest first, as Dashan was truly exhausted from the journey; even climbing trees was difficult, but it was only up in the trees that it felt safe.
Dashan took a rest while Zheng Tan brought Ermao and Wei Leng over, and Pei Liang stayed here to watch over Pei Jie and Dashan.
Half an hour later.
In the clearing near the tent, five people were tied up neatly and left there, Wei Leng studying five bullets he had retrieved from the bodies of the people in front of him.
Clicking his tongue twice, Wei Leng said to Zheng Tan, “Impressive, you’re getting more and more skilled. Does your Cat Dad know how awesome you are?”
Zheng Tan squatted nearby, head down, counting ants on the ground, not responding. He had contributed significantly this time, and he wasn’t seeking gratitude from Wei Leng and the others, just their help in wrapping things up smoothly. Having known them for so long, Ermao and Wei Leng should understand the Jiao family’s low-profile strategy. Zheng Tan just had to keep his contributions and fame deeply hidden.
Meanwhile, Ermao was studying the pen that Zheng Tan had been carrying on his back. Next to him, there was a box that Zheng Tan had already opened to show them the contents.
To get Ermao and Wei Leng to assist with the aftermath, Zheng Tan chose to disclose more details so they could concoct a story to explain the incident to others afterwards.
“Where did it get this thing from?” Wei Leng looked toward Ermao, who had been helping carry the box.
“I heard it was given to Black Coal by a kid from Beijing.” Ermao was also shocked; when did kids’ toys evolve to this extent? He’d have to inquire with the Jiao family when he got back.
“Alright, I’ll go call Senior Brother Pei and the others to discuss how to spin this tale,” said Ermao, putting the objects down and heading toward the woods.
Upon hearing Ermao’s words, Zheng Tan felt relieved. Even though Ermao could be off-beat at times, once he said something, he would definitely follow through.
When the person hit by the electric shock bullet regained consciousness, his whole body felt twisted. He heard voices but couldn’t make out the words, his muscles still shaking and twitching in several places, his face as if someone had injected Novocaine into it, his lips quivering but unable to speak, his lower lip as heavy as if it had a fifty-pound weight hanging from it.
Pei Liang, seeing that the man who took his son was regaining consciousness, showed no mercy and delivered a punch straight to him.
The man who had just regained a flicker of consciousness passed out again.
Actually, Pei Liang wanted to beat the man severely, even considered quietly taking care of him for good in this desolate wilderness, but ultimately dismissed the idea. He could use legal means to have the man sentenced to death or life in prison but couldn’t just deal with him here, not with Pei Jie around.
While Ermao and the others were discussing how to fabricate the story, Pei Jie was figuring out how to get the gun his dad had taken back.
“Dad, give me the gun. I can go without the bullets!”
“No.”
Pei Jie, not satisfied, protested, “But I confiscated it!”
Pei Liang didn’t even look at him, replying bluntly, “Stop farting.”
Pei Jie stiffened his neck, trying to argue, but choked up and fell silent. It wasn’t entirely true that he had confiscated it; he only managed to take it from the enemy after Black Cat had knocked the opponent down. But anyhow, it was he who had personally wrestled it from the enemy’s hands.
Zheng Tan watched Pei Jie, who had started to bounce around energetically again, and thought to himself: This kid has a really short memory, a trait not just anyone could possess. If it were another child his age, they’d probably be seeking psychological counseling by now. (To be continued. If you like this work, I invite you to vote for it at Qidian (NovelFire.net).
