Chapter 434: A Life or Two II
Daphne saw Sirona’s face gradually fall and with every change of her expression, despair crept further and further into her heart. She shook her head, starting out slowly, then when she accidentally met gazes with Sirona and read the look of sympathy written across Sirona’s irises, Daphne felt a part of her shatter.
"No..." she murmured. "No! Get away from me!" She struggled and kicked, using one hand to shove Sirona away and the other to pull her skirts close. "Get back! Don’t hurt my child! Get away!"
"Daphne, please!" Sirona pleaded, wrestling with Daphne as she tried to hold the woman down. Every extra movement she made was only going to cause the blood to flow further. She was already losing so much― if Daphne didn’t stop, she might just bleed out and die!
"Killer! Murderer!" Daphne screamed. Insanity had long taken root in her mind, blurring her rationality as tears brimmed in her eyes. A part of her already knew what Sirona’s look meant― her baby was gone. "You killed my child!"
"What are you doing just standing there?!" Sirona yelled at the two men, using all her strength to hold Daphne still. "Help me hold her down!"
Hearing this, Daphne saw red. Her earrings began to glow red as her hands burned with flames of fury. Sirona immediately withdrew her hands, her skin scorched by the searing heat of Daphne’s palms. However, the Queen was not done. She raised her hands and shot out two blasts consecutively― one at Nereus and one at Zephyr, both of whom tried to step closer so as to come to Sirona’s aid.
Zephyr’s wings quickly moved forward, shielding himself from Daphne’s blast. The force of it was enough to cause him to stumble back a little, but it didn’t hurt him one bit. On the other hand, Nereus sidestepped it, then summoned a small wave of water to quench the flames when it ricocheted back like a boomerang toward him.
"Daphne!" Zephyr called out, holding down one hand while Nereus held down the other, preventing her from moving any further than a mere squirm. "Get a hold of yourself!"
"Murderer..." Daphne continued to say. The tears had long fallen, forming streaks down her cheeks. Her struggles, however, were quickly weakening as her body quaked with sobs. Even her voice no longer held as much force, dimming in volume.
"It was you..." she mumbled. "It’s all because of you―"
Sirona raised a hand, pressing two fingers against Daphne’s forehead. Her hands began to glow purple and with just a tap, Daphne’s eyes rolled to the back of her head and she slumped, instantly knocked unconscious.
"What did you do to her?" Zephyr squawked, anxiously glaring at Sirona.
"Keeping her alive, that’s what," she sharply retorted. "Anymore struggling and she’s going to bleed herself out. Nereus, form a bubble around her with a small pocket for her head just to breathe. The water must encase her lower half, you hear me?"
Normally, the kelpie would’ve wanted nothing more than to shove a middle finger unceremoniously in the healer’s face. He wasn’t her biggest fan, not after she robbed him of a body part. She was able to bring out the worst of him.
However, Nereus understood that there was no time left on these things, not when Daphne’s line was on the line. His eyes glowed brightly blue as he moved his hands, quickly forming a bubble that encased Daphne’s body, just as Sirona requested. The bubble had a pocket of air for Daphne to breathe, just big enough so that she could be transported to the palace’s infirmary.
The trio barged in through the halls, carrying Daphne along via Nereus’s magic bubble, causing eyes to turn and tongues to wag as they watched.
"Get Queen Lavinia!" Sirona barked at a passing maid.
The maid scowled. "Who are you to―"
"Listen here," Sirona growled, grabbing the maid by the collar of her shirt. "If anything happens to the Queen of Vramid, her husband will raze this city to the ground just to find the culprit. If you’re willing to offer you and your family up on the platter, then feel free to question my humble request."
The maid’s face paled into the color of a sheet of paper as she frantically nodded. The second Sirona’s hands released their grip on her clothes, the maid scrambled, dashing straight for Queen Lavinia’s chambers.
Sirona did not give the maid a second glance, instead, quickly leading the other two down a series of corridors through the shortest way to the infirmary. She burst through the doors, scaring some of the healers who were present on standby, before rushing to the cabinets to pull out various ingredients.
"Queen Daphne?" one of the healers asked. "What happened?"
"Get me some astragalus, Harvey," Sirona instructed. "She fell and lost a lot of blood. The baby did not make it. We need to stop her bleeding. If not, she’s next."
Harvey followed as instructed, not questioning her instructions. He picked up the required herbs, including some which Sirona hadn’t asked for but would prove useful. When he came over, his eyes widened at the side of Daphne trapped in the water bubble.
"Using the pressure of water to temporarily stop the bleeding," he murmured under his breath. "What an interesting method..."
"Mash this," Sirona said, shoving a few seemingly random herbs into the Xahan healer’s hands. "I need the juice as soon as possible."
"Yes, Healer Sirona―"
"Her Majesty is here!" the maid from before yelled as she burst into the room, Queen Lavinia showing up shortly behind.
She panted heavily, her face red as she took one look at Daphne, who was now on the bed. Gasping, she quickly ran over, her hands beginning to glow with magic as she touched the water bubble that still encased Daphne.
Instantly, the bubble reacted with Queen Lavinia’s magic, suddenly gaining brilliance as it glowed with light. Queen Lavinia frowned, perspiration beading across her forehead as she turned to Sirona.
She asked, "Did anyone inform King Atticus yet?"
