Chapter 414: Weak Stomach
Chapter 414: Weak Stomach
Daphne woke up the next morning with her stomach doing flying somersaults and her guts rearranging inside her body. She felt a wave of nausea creep from her stomach before rising to her throat. Unable to tamper it down, she bolted from the bed and dashed straight to the en-suite bathroom.
To hell with propriety and dressing up! The sheets fell from her body as she ran with no care, hunched over the toilet seat as she threw everything she had for dinner out into the bowl.
Wave after wave, Daphne emptied the contents of her stomach, retching until she began to dry heave nothing but acid out. Her mouth tasted bitter and sour, and the air smelled foul. However, she was much too tired to care.
She sank to the ground, her arms and legs trembling from a mixture of soreness from last night’s strenuous activities and having used so much energy to drive the nausea away.
"Daphne?" Atticus’s voice came from the bedroom, though Daphne was much too weak to even look in that direction.
She simply panted, breathing through her mouth as she struggled to get up. Using the toilet to support her own weight, Daphne struggled to get up on her two feet. Her knees wobbled and she would’ve fallen straight to the ground if it hadn’t been for Atticus, who rushed over just in time to hold her.
"What’s wrong?" he asked before taking a good look around.
A frown quickly made its way onto his face and he helped her over to the small pouf placed right in front of the vanity within the washroom. Once she was seated, he waved his hand over the mess, using magic to flush down the vomit and bile before cleaning the floors spotless.
Going over to the sink, Atticus filled a glass with water before preparing an empty bowl.
"Rinse," he said, and Daphne did as instructed, rinsing her mouth before spitting into the empty bowl that Atticus held out for her.
"Perhaps dinner really had been too much after all," she said with a wry laugh. "The spice must’ve upset my stomach."
Atticus dutifully flushed the rinsing water away before he began to draw a hot bath. Scattering some readily placed rose petals into the water, they waited in silence for the water to rise. Once it was at a suitable level, he quickly placed her into the water, the warm liquid surrounding Daphne in a comforting embrace.
She sighed out loud, her sore muscles feeling instant relief upon contact with the hot bath. Steam rose into the air, and for a while, the room was filled with nothing more but the swishing sound of water when Daphne adjusted her position.
"Perhaps I should get Sirona over to check you over," Atticus said, frowning. "My stomach feels a little funny too after all the drinks and spice from last night. Xahan’s food might not be suitable for our weak stomachs."
Daphne’s lips cracked into a small smile at his joke. She shook her head, her eyes glimmering for the first time in a long while as she stared at her husband. It was nice to feel this warmth again from the man she was married to.
A dark cloud passed by Daphne’s head as she wondered how long this peace would last.
Her emotions must’ve shown a little too clearly on her face for Atticus leaned in, gently holding her cheeks.
"Is something wrong, sunshine?" he asked.
Worry filled his eyes, coloring every inch of his features and shaping even the frown of his eyebrows. If he was acting, he should be awarded for his stellar performance. However, she hoped that this concern he felt for her was genuine and not because she was useful for his plans.
’There’s no use thinking about it,’ she thought. Constantly having that hung up in her mind would only cause her to act out of the ordinary, henceforth gaining even more suspicion from Atticus. She didn’t dare to think to what extent he would go just to make sure she wouldn’t get in his way.
It was one thing to risk her own life for this, but it was a whole other issue if Zephyr, Nereus, and the others got dragged in as well just because she couldn’t keep her face straight.
"Maybe Sirona might have medication?" Daphne asked instead, trying to go along with his suggestions. She doubted Sirona would do anything to her, especially with Atticus around.
Not that she didn’t trust the healer, of course. She trusted Sirona just about as much as she trusted Atticus― enough but wavering; at least for matters of her own health. On the other hand, Daphne wouldn’t dare put Sirona in a room with Zephyr or Nereus any longer.
"I’ll be back shortly," Atticus promised. He stood up but leaned down to press a kiss to the top of Daphne’s head. "Call for help if there’s anything."
"Don’t you worry about me," she said.
"How could I not?" With a reassuring smile, Atticus turned and left the room, leaving the door to the en-suite bathroom just slightly ajar while closing the door to their chambers.
Once Daphne was sure that she was alone and she could no longer hear his footsteps, her pleasant expression fell from her face.
She didn’t think she would need Sirona to come check on her to figure out what was wrong with her body. After all, a woman’s intuition was a powerful thing, and even if she was wrong, it wouldn’t be that bad to over-assess the situation rather than underestimate it.
Her hands moved over to her stomach, gently pressing against the flat surface.
Nothing.
But honestly, what did she expect? Her stomach wasn’t round and even if it was, it had always been because of a stuffed dinner.
Was it even possible to become with child so quickly after trying for one? They just did it last night.
Surely she wouldn’t feel morning sickness already? Most records and experiences she overheard all mentioned that it would usually start at least a month or two after impregnation.
That meant that it couldn’t have been from last night unless this was a miracle baby that defied all laws of human biology. Atticus was a highly powerful man, but Daphne doubted such prowess extended to the virility of his essence.
Daphne thought hard about what had happened the last few weeks― maybe even months.
Then, her face paled.
