Chapter 321: Blue Glow II

Chapter 321: Blue Glow II

"Daphne!" Zephyr screamed, trying to dash in front of the blast of fire to shield Daphne.

He knew he could handle it― if he could absorb a hit from dragonfire unscathed, Atticus’s human flames were nothing in comparison. But he was too late; he was too slow and he could only shriek, flattening his wings as though that would make a difference as he stretched out a desperate hand to pull Daphne out of the way.

Then, water entered his open mouth, and he slipped on the floor. And how could he not? The floor was wet, in fact, the room was steadily getting flooded, and the water was reaching Zephyr’s waist.

Zephyr spat out a mouthful of water and wheezed, immediately panicking at the sudden change. Where had the water appeared from? He looked at Nereus who nearly floated away from his arms and hurriedly grabbed him back before he could end up in the literal hands of the enemy.

"Nereus! Did you do this?" He all but screamed at him. By gods, he would never underestimate this watery horse again! If they made it out alive, Zephyr would willingly steal all the vegetables he wanted to eat!

Nereus opened his eyes weakly. Now, with water surrounding him, he could feel his strength slowly returning, but he was too weak to speak, let alone ensure that he could be heard over the sounds of siblings dueling in the background.

Most importantly, that stupid chicken knew nothing. This new surge of water was not caused by him. He was not so powerful as to create water from thin air when he was on the verge of death. But there was someone who could.

Someone who did it once as a child.

Nereus’s lips curled into a brief smile before he closed his eyes. He could rest now, knowing that victory was in Daphne’s hands.

"Oi! Don’t go back to sleep! Reply, you idiot!" Zephyr yelled, just as Nereus’s eyes rolled backward and he passed out for good. Zephyr groaned. This was clearly too much for him!

But this was good. That water horse managed to give Daphne the advantage to turn things around. Zephyr turned his eyes to Daphne’s shivering figure, her hands outstretched as the water surged around her.

"Daphne! Get his ass!" Zephyr cheered.

Daphne let out a triumphant scream in response. With the surge of water, Alistair’s wall of fire was all but extinguished, and the battlefield had turned in Daphne’s favor.

It was all that stupid kelpie’s fault.

"Don’t think you’ll win just because your little pet pulled this trick!" Alistair roared. "He’ll die too, and his blood will be on your hands, Daphne!"

Daphne scoffed. It seemed like her idiot brother didn’t know about her hydromancy despite having it witnessed once before himself as a child, hence he believed Nereus was the culprit. She wanted nothing more than to address this misconception.

"Nereus isn’t responsible for this. I am. Alistair, drown in hell!" Now that Daphne was surrounded by water, she felt invincible.

What’s more, she could feel that there was even more water she could draw on. It was buried behind the castle walls in metal pipes, but it was there. She could even feel some of it winding through the tunnels.

All she needed to do was to pull it out.

Daphne focused, and cracks began to form in the walls of the room. A look of alarm crossed Alistair’s face as he watched the walls of his new estate crumple. Surely his sister couldn’t be capable of such a feat?

He made sure his dungeon was free from any accessible water to ensure the kelpie couldn’t escape, but the rest of his estate was normal. He was royalty, used to luxury, and easy access to clean running water was the bare minimum of his needs.

Who knew that Daphne would utterly destroy his estate via the plumbing?

But there was no denying what he saw. Water slowly began to make its way through the multiple gaps in a thin trickle, then it spewed into a massive torrent!

"Impossible!" Alistair screamed in disbelief.

Daphne said nothing but sent a new wave of water after Alistair. The water that came from the pipes flowed towards her like eager dogs to their owner, and she could easily send wave after wave after Alistair. Even as the waves climbed higher, Daphne remained unfazed.

She would not drown.

Alistair howled in outrage as he found himself losing his footing at the sudden surge of waves. With his surroundings growing increasingly damp and cold, it was harder for him to conjure up flame― and the flames he conjured weren’t as hot as before. In fact, they barely left his hands before getting snuffed out by the water.

"You can’t summon water!" Alistair shrieked as he barely avoided another wave.

The water was now coming up to his chest, and it would drown his stupid sister soon enough. He just had to last till then. He snarled and spluttered, and his stump accidentally pressed against the burnt patches of skin, causing him to hiss in pain.

Alistair’s other hand was still trying to send bursts of flame in her direction, but smoke was forming more often than flame.

"You are weak and stupid and useless and there was simply no way! No fucking way! I’m not losing to a lying useless bitch like you!" Alistair ranted, anger clouding his vision.

It was the kelpie, he was sure of it. He knew he should have killed it when he got the chance!

Then a bright light from Daphne’s fingers caught his eyes. The aquamarines in her ring burned a brilliant blue, so bright that Alistair could see it even through the waves that buffeted him.

Alistair’s face paled as realization dawned in his eyes. It was the ring, the Symphony of the New Dawn. It had aquamarines that could be used to summon and control water, in the hands of a skilled hydromancer.

Daphne, his weak useless little sister, was a hydromancer, in addition to being skilled with fire. Was this why the drugging failed? And blast it, did that bastard Eugene Attonson know this? Was this why he was so bloody obsessed with Daphne?

But there was no time for him to answer all these questions. Daphne’s eyes were dark with vengeance, and she didn’t look like she was drowning anytime soon.

Alistair, for once in his long life, felt fear creep into his heart.
