Chapter 277: Steal Back the Crown

Chapter 277: Steal Back the Crown

Hazelle screamed and ducked as Alistair flung a chair in her direction, his face thunderous with rage. She had believed his mood was improving after he went out with Silas to look for Eugene Attonson, but clearly, something must have set him off!

"Alistair! What is the meaning of this?" Hazelle cried out, flinching as he shoved down an entire bookshelf, causing books to fall all over the floor.

Alistair let out a cold laugh. "The meaning? There is no meaning to anything right now. My father is serious about giving the throne to Daphne. He means to unite Vramid with Reaweth, to ensure Reaweth’s legacy remains as one of glory."

Needless to say, his father, the illustrious King Cyrus, did not believe his oldest son had what it took to rule the kingdom. According to his father, Alistair had proven in the recent altercation with King Atticus that he had too much pride and too little sense. He didn’t even manage to make any allies out of the other royalty during the Crown Conquest!

King Cyrus refused to go down in history as the king who put an incompetent son on the throne, the reason for Reaweth’s decline. He wanted the history books to remember him as a wise king who made the necessary hard choices for the good of the kingdom.

His oldest son wasn’t good enough anymore.

Hazelle shook her head in disbelief, all blood leaving her face. Her voice trembled in fear.

"That’s impossible! He must be lying to get you to prove yourself! You’re his oldest son, of course you’re inheriting! There has never been a case of a king handing their kingdom to anyone else, let alone a married daughter. He hates King Atticus too, doesn’t he?"

"So what if he doesn’t?" Alistair paced back and forth, his face twisted with anger. "He can’t fight off that bastard, and Reaweth can’t beat Vramid’s military might. So there you have it. Your husband is disinherited!"

Hazelle’s knees weakened, and she sagged against the wall. "No... no... this... wait, what about Eugene Attonson?"

"He wants Daphne in return," Alistair said with gritted teeth. "Tell me, how do you expect me to kidnap her with her overprotective husband hanging around?"

If only his sister was still the same useless child as before! But no, now she had a homicidal husband and a mythical creature as a guard. His wrist still smarted from the hold that damn bird caught him in.

If Eugene Attonson was so powerful, he should have snatched Daphne up for himself. But why would he, when Alistair was desperate to uphold his end of the agreement?

There was a gentle knock on the door. Both of them paused.

"Brother Alistair, it’s me," Drusilla’s sweet voice came from the other side. "I heard the news. Please let me in?"

"Come in," Alistair said, running his only hand through his hair to look more presentable.

Drusilla still thought the world of him, and she proved that she loved him with her words and actions. Alistair didn’t want her to see him at his worst.

A pinched expression crossed Hazelle’s face. If Drusilla wasn’t Alistair’s half-sister, she would suspect they were having an affair behind her back. Her own husband showed Drusilla more care and concern than he had ever shown her.

Drusilla entered the room and caught sight of the wreckage. Instead of panicking like Hazelle, she immediately went towards Alistair and gently touched his arm.

"Brother, are you alright? You shouldn’t overtax yourself," Drusilla said worriedly. "Father’s decision is not the end of the world; there is always a way out. I’ve been thinking of solutions for you."

"What way out are you referring to?" Hazelle couldn’t help but interrupt. She didn’t like the way her own husband was hanging onto every word from Drusilla’s lips as though it was gospel.

"Don’t interrupt Drusilla," Alistair glared at Hazelle, "at least she’s being useful. All you have done is scream and cry like a goddamn nuisance. If we weren’t forced to marry, I would never choose you!"

Hazelle bit her lips. This was ridiculous. She had to endure the worst of his temper and Alistair wasn’t even thankful or grateful!

"Brother, how can you say that about Sister-in-law Hazelle? She is only worried about you," Drusilla chided gently, and Alistair huffed and looked away.

Of course, Hazelle noted that her husband did not apologize for insulting her.

"Drusilla, you’re smart. What ideas do you have?" Alistair asked.

"Silas told me about your plans with Lord Attonson," Drusilla stated. "We have to regrow your hand, and Eugene Attonson wants Sister Daphne in repayment. So we must steal her away and hand him to her!"

"Like it’s that easy!" Hazelle burst out. Alistair had just ranted about the same thing. "There’s no opportunity to do something so outrageous!"

Alistair roared at Hazelle, causing her to flinch. "Don’t be rude!"

"Opportunities can be created," Drusilla continued smoothly. "I have thought of a way to ruin Sister Daphne’s reputation so that Father cannot give her the throne without looking like a laughing stock."

Alistair stood up taller, giving her his full attention.

"But I must say... it’s not a very kind one," Drusilla said with a delicate moue of her lips. She stared at Alistair through her eyelashes. "I hope Brother Alistair doesn’t think too lowly of me after this."

"I would never," Alistair said fervently, stroking Drusilla’s hair with his one remaining hand. Drusilla could do no wrong in his eyes.

Hazelle could feel her lip bleed from how hard she was biting it.

"That warms my heart, Brother Alistair. I only want the best for you! If this plan works, Brother Alistair’s status as Crown Prince can be assured. With her reputation ruined, there will be more instances where Sister Daphne is left alone and unguarded."

Similar to how Daphne was like in the past.

Alistiar’s eyes widened as he caught a brief glimpse of hope.

"I believe with Brother Alistair’s skills, he would be able to overpower Sister Daphne easily and bring her to Lord Eugene." Drusilla affectionately clinged onto Alistair’s shirt. He did not refuse her touch.

"And what would this miraculous plan be?" Hazelle asked doubtfully. It sounded too good to be true.

Drusilla beamed at her with a twinkle in her eye. "Sister-in-law, how much do you know about Duke Lanperouge’s birthday ball?"
