Chapter 232: Snobbish Welcome Party
In no time at all, Daphne once again found herself in a carriage bound for another land. However, instead of the awkward atmosphere that enveloped the carriage when they traveled to Raxuvia, this time, there was nothing but love and comfort as she cuddled into Atticus’s chest for the long road ahead.
Since Atticus was a caring and considerate husband, he made sure the carriage was lined with fluffy pillows for Daphne to rest her tired waist and aching bottom. He made sure to plan their route around Daphne’s comfort, ensuring that they stayed in better quality inns at night, so as to better ravish his poor little wife on a supportive mattress.
He even brought silken bedsheets from the palace! Let no one say Atticus was a brute.
"You’re a menace," Jonah complained, because he wasn’t no one, and his dark circles were starting to become a permanent fixture on his face as he continued to stand guard for the couple.
Atticus had now found out about the kelpie, and with them actively traveling towards Jean Nott’s last known location, he was taking no chances with Daphne’s safety. Atticus posted more men on watch, which meant that their bedroom exploits were now common knowledge among the guards and Vramid’s citizens, much to Daphne’s eternal embarrassment.
"Now, I’m just proving to my citizens that their royal family is alive and in love. This is simply a honeymoon!" Atticus declared cheerfully as he got on his own horse. "I need to enjoy it while it lasts. There’s only one day’s ride till Reaweth."
And he doubted Daphne would feel amorous in the country that treated her like absolute trash, especially if she had to talk to her numerous terrible siblings.
"Isn’t that right, sunshine?" Atticus asked.
"Uh huh, uh huh, right," Daphne mumbled non-committedly from her spot inside the carriage as she stared down at the Marquis Seibert’s records. So much money was stolen... could she give each household ten silver coins at least while building a school? And a clinic?
Decisions, decisions.
Atticus watched his wife frown to herself. She had swatted him away when he tried to cuddle, claiming that she needed some time alone to recharge. Clearly, she was so busy with work she hadn’t heard a single word!
"Take a leaf out of your wife’s book and focus on your job," Jonah lectured.
"Producing an heir is my job," Atticus retorted, waggling his eyebrows, "Besides, there is not much I can do until we arrive in Reaweth."
Atticus’s eyes flashed menacingly at the prospect of meeting Daphne’s family. He was going to shake Prince Alistair until he coughed up Jean Nott’s whereabouts.
Thankfully, there was no trouble on the last leg of their journey, and they crossed Reaweth’s border with no issues. To Atticus’s utter surprise, there was only one woman waiting for them at the borders as their escort. He peered into the distance, thinking that they were simply on their way, but the roads were empty.
"Greetings to King Atticus," the woman bowed lowly, the very picture of polite obeisance. "I am Helena, the head maid of Reaweth’s palace. I’ve been ordered to escort you to the palace."
"You? Alone?" Atticus asked disbelievingly.
"Yes," the maid said without pause. She didn’t even smile. Or frown. Or really, display any emotion other than the stupid snobbish look.
Atticus’s fists itched. He was never one to hit a woman usually but this one was making it particularly difficult to keep his violent tendencies to himself.
"Bloody hell," Atticus cursed, incensed at the snub. "I’m not expecting flower garlands heralding my welcome, but this is simply too shabby a reception. Did you fly here? Or walk here from the palace? How are you planning to actually escort us back?"
Atticus glared down at the maid who hurriedly stared back at the floor.
He might’ve hated Prince Nathaniel’s guts but at least he had the decency to come personally greet them when they had arrived in Raxuvia. He was the crown prince at that! Even he, a man that was known for his immense pride, had been decent enough of a host to fetch his guests personally and make them feel welcome.
Clearly Prince Alistair learnt nothing from the trip to Raxuvia if he was sending a head maid to escort him. When Atticus got his hands on him, he’d be a head too. Where was he?
In fact, what about Reaweth’s abundance of other princes and princesses? They could’ve even sent more than one servant, if their royalty had all died out unknowingly over the last few days.
The maid replied, "I was told that a ride would be provided by King Atticus, since there would be a carriage."
"What on earth? He wants to leech off my ride?" Atticus scowled heavily. "So Prince Alistair can’t even make travel arrangements for his own people?"
He definitely wasn’t going to let some strange maid share a carriage with Daphne!
"Sunshine, is your father senile? Or maybe Prince Alistair has decided to abdicate?"
"I don’t know, but we still need to reach the palace before nightfall," Daphne said, peering to look at the poor woman who might end up injured in the face of Atticus’s displeasure. She looked vaguely familiar, but Daphne couldn’t remember her.
Then again, she never had much contact with the servants, since most of them refused to serve an incompetent mistress.
"Let her sit with me and we’ll be on our way. Come on, you can’t be expecting her to run after us?"
Atticus grumbled that he might have, but if Daphne had no objections to sharing her carriage, who was he to complain? Besides, it’ll only be a few hours at most.
So Daphne tidied her documents and stepped out of the carriage.
"Keep these," Daphne said to Atticus, handing him the pile of papers. "I don’t have a bag with me."
Atticus nodded in response and Daphne turned back to re-enter the carriage, just in time for the maid to enter the carriage and slam the door behind her, locking Daphne out.
Daphne paused. She exchanged a wordless glance with Atticus, who looked equally as shocked.
The couple blinked dumbly at the closed carriage door, appalled and stunned by what had just happened.
