Chapter 181: Trouble in Paradise II

"Your Highness, you shouldn’t enter now," Maisie cautioned Atticus with quick shakes of her head. "Queen Daphne said no one was to disturb her thinking process."

"I’m sure exceptions can be made for her beloved husband," Atticus said dryly, but Maisie refused to budge, giving him a disappointed look.

"She especially said she didn’t want to see you because..." Maisie took out a piece of parchment and cleared her throat, reading it out in a tremulous voice, "My husband clearly wants to spend time with other women instead of me! Well Atticus, you can go and flirt with anyone you want. I have work to do."

Atticus quickly grabbed the note from Maisie’s hand and scrutinized it carefully. True enough, it was his wife’s penmanship. His eyes lit up when he caught sight of a particular phrase, and he promptly shoved Maisie and her objections out of the way.

"Your Highness! You shouldn’t―"

Atticus peered into the room to see his wife rubbing her temples in front of her messy work desk. There were balls of scrunched-up parchment littering the floor around her feet, and the baby griffin was having a grand time playing with them, either by jabbing at them with its beak or batting them around with its wings.

Unfortunately, it seemed that only the baby griffin was enjoying itself. It gave Atticus a cheerful chirp as it toddled over, carrying a ball of paper with its beak.

"Maisie, what did I say about keeping quiet?" Daphne demanded peevishly without turning around. "I’m trying to work!"

"My apologies, Your Highness. I tried to stop him," Maisie said forlornly.

Daphne paused, and then slowly turned around. Atticus waved, trying to look appropriately apologetic.

Daphne narrowed her eyes.

"What are you doing here?"

"Well, your note said I could flirt with anyone I wanted. And I wanted to flirt with you." He paired this line with a charming smile, but Daphne remained unmoved.

She pointed at the door. "Out. I have work to do."

"I can help!" Atticus protested. "Who knows Vramid better than I do?"

"I don’t want your help, I want to win this on my own," Daphne insisted.

"But I want you to win. Even if you created the ugliest float in the world, I would simply destroy everyone’s floats so that you’ll be the victor," Atticus promised. "I swear, I am not going on a date with anyone else but you. That was the plan right from the start."

"Do not do that! I want to win fairly!" Daphne said, aghast, but a smile was threatening to form. She had married a thoroughly ridiculous man. "I don’t want to give that vile Lady Fracessa yet another reason to publicly ridicule me."

"And you will because you are the most incredible woman I have ever met," Atticus said.

He sensed that Daphne was no longer as angry as before, and he took this chance to massage her temples with his fingers. Her skin was cool and soft beneath his touch, like gliding his hands across silk.

From where she stood in the corner, Maisie knowingly left the room, closing the door behind her softly. No one had noticed her slip out. There was no need for her to be there now that the husband and wife were about to spend some time together. Maisie wasn’t too keen on becoming the third wheel!

"This will help with your headache," Atticus promised. "I learned it from Sirona."

Daphne leaned back and closed her eyes, sagging into his hands while Atticus slowly rubbed away the stress of the day’s events, leaving her with a lighter head and in a much better mood. Atticus could have stopped then, but he wanted to spend more time with his wife.

So his hands drifted lower to massage her neck. Daphne’s head tilted to the side, her eyes still closed, wordlessly offering him permission to do as he pleased. Atticus swallowed as he massaged her neck gently, feeling his mouth dry up as Daphne began to let out tiny whimpers.

"Should I stop?" Atticus asked worriedly.

"No!" Daphne burst out. "My entire body hurts! And it’s all your fault!"

A baleful blue eye stared up at Atticus before closing again. Atticus nodded and obediently continued to massage Daphne’s neck when all he wanted to do was rain kisses all over it.

Perhaps his wife might be more inclined to be affectionate when this whole fiasco was over. Atticus simply had to be patient. He continued to massage Daphne’s neck, and eventually, his hands drifted to her shoulders, where the bulk of Daphne’s tension lay.

Unbidden, Daphne let out a loud moan as she felt Atticus’s fingers dig into her sore flesh, offering much-needed relief. Atticus choked; his mind couldn’t help but think of other, less innocent ways to make Daphne moan.

"Oh yes... right there..." Daphne murmured in blissed-out pleasure while Atticus rubbed out a particularly stubborn knot in her shoulder. She couldn’t help the cries of pleasure that escaped her lips under Atticus’s skillful hands.

"Don’t work too hard," Atticus reminded her hoarsely as he leaned in closer, inhaling the fragrant scent of her body.

He was going to need to spend quality time with himself in the bathroom afterward. Daphne’s little moans and her words, said so breathily, were creating an arousing fantasy in his head.

He shifted his legs; it was getting increasingly harder to focus on innocently massaging his wife’s tense muscles. Daphne was pliant under his hands, so willing and trusting, her mouth parting as she gasped and moaned in pleasure.

Atticus could think of so many other things he could do to her that would have a similar result. He leaned down to whisper in his wife’s ear, but before he could even begin to form a word, Daphne stood up suddenly, her knees nearly banging against the old oaken table.

"Sunshine, careful!" Atticus called out, his eyes wide with surprise. Daphne’s sudden movement would have caused the top of her head to bump against Atticus’s nose, had he not moved away in time. He silently thanked the stars for his own quick reflexes.

"I got it!" Daphne gazed at him, her eyes bright with excitement.

"Got what?"

"An idea for the float!"
