Chapter 152: Bated Breaths IV
Everyone held their breaths at the possibility of Princess Drusilla having lost her innocence before marriage. Not only that, unlike Queen Yvaine, she didn’t even have a long-term partner with whom she shared a star-crossed romance! That in itself was blasphemous.
At first, everyone sat around and waited for the new gossip and rumors of Queen Daphne to drop. Now, it seemed like the tides had turned and it was the young Reawethen princess that was thrust into the spotlight of the most undesired stage.
"I... I..." Drusilla stuttered, her eyes darting everywhere but at the ring as though as long as she didn’t look at it, she could pretend that it didn’t exist.
"You do understand what is happening right now, yes?" Cordelia asked. "For every second that you don’t wear the ring, you’re basically cementing the fact that you are indeed afraid of proving your innocence." Cordelia’s lips twisted into a sharp smile. "Which also implies that you are, in fact, not."
"A ring isn’t enough to prove my innocence," Drusilla seethed. "Every educated lady knows that the hymen isn’t a full piece that has to be broken. Some might be born with one that is more whole than others. So how does the ring even test one’s purity, truly?"
"Are you implying that King Atticus is..." Cordelia paused, raising an eyebrow. She stifled a laugh before continuing. She pinched her fingers together so that there was but a small gap between her index finger and thumb. "Small?"
Thank the heavens Daphne wasn’t drinking anything at that moment. If she was, she would’ve most definitely spat her drink out.
"Why would that be related?" Drusilla scoffed, just short of stomping her foot on the ground indignantly.
"The only way Queen Daphne’s hymen would’ve been intact, by your theory, would be if King Atticus’s manhood hadn’t been able to reach her hymen during intercourse," Queen Yvaine calmly explained.
Most of the women present at the table flushed a deeper red, half of them simply uncomfortable with the topic while the other half blushing at the thought of a certain king’s southern regions.
Even Daphne could feel her cheeks turning hot from Queen Yvaine’s description. It made her mildly uncomfortable that so many women definitely had the mental image of her husband’s manhood running through their heads now. A strange bolt of jealousy shot through her before a memory took its place.
Bathtub. Washing. Pressed up against her. Very big―
Daphne shook her head abruptly, trying to get the thought out of her head. That was nothing to think about in broad daylight.
However, Queen Yvaine quickly caught sight of Daphne’s actions. A small chuckle slipped from the woman’s lips, though it held no ill intent.
"It seems like Queen Daphne knows that that isn’t true."
Daphne merely kept her lips pursed but her silence was an answer enough. All the women immediately understood. King Atticus was most definitely gifted in bed― not as though they had ever doubted his prowess for a second.
Lucky Daphne.
"What about the others here?" Drusilla tried to steer the target from her back. This time, she pointed to Cordelia. "Queen Yvaine’s test could’ve just been a fluke. Why not let’s have Princess Cordelia test this as well?"
Drusilla was just grasping at straws now. She knew that the princess of Nedour had many male friends. The people of Nedour weren’t as conservative as a lot of other people from other kingdoms― even the fashion that was often seen on the Nedish would’ve been considered clothing worn by courtesans and harlots of other lands.
If she was going down, Drusilla wasn’t about to go down alone.
"What about it, Princess Cordelia?" Queen Yvaine asked. "Would you like to entertain Princess Drusilla and conduct a test?"
Daphne held out her ring for Cordelia to take. Unlike Drusilla, Cordelia took it without hesitation, slipping it into her finger.
"The Symphony of a New Dawn is one of the most famous treasures of the world," Princess Cordelia said. "I’m honored to wear it, even for just a moment. It’s not a chance just anyone can have."
She held out her hand, admiring the ring contrasting against her sun-kissed skin tone. Daphne hadn’t noticed it until now but Cordelia seemed a little more tanned than she last saw her. The seaside sun did wonders to her bronze complexion.
The ring’s moonstone had been rainbow when Queen Yvaine wore it on her finger. Now that it was on Cordelia, the stone started to shift in color, the sheen slowly turning to blue. Only, it wasn’t as quick as it was for Queen Yvaine and the shine wasn’t as lustrous. Many scratched their heads at what it might’ve implied but Cordelia was more than happy to explain with just one sentence.
"The people of Nedour are always in pursuit of what they enjoy," she simply said.
"But it’s still blue," Princess Charlotte pointed out, confused.
"Of course," Cordelia answered. She plucked the ring off, staring a little longingly at it before returning it to Daphne. "While I have my fun, I will never lose my virginity."
She paused for a moment, watching as Daphne slipped the ring back on, causing the blue shine to glow a little brighter even when it had just passed her fingernail.
Cordelia continued, "That’s because I never lose."
Daphne’s grip slipped for a moment, causing her to nearly drop the ring from shock. For the second time in the last five minutes, Cordelia had caused her so much surprise that it would’ve been disastrous if she had a drink in her mouth.
She turned her head, squinting at Cordelia in confusion.
"I... don’t think that’s how it works, Princess Cordelia," she said.
And to think that Daphne had thought Princess Cordelia was smarter than she had given her credit for. It seemed like the Nedish princess still had her own... interesting moments.
"Just put on the cursed ring, Princess Drusilla," Princess Charlotte egged on. She leaned back in her seat and folded her arms across her chest, scoffing. "Prove to them you are still pure."
"Surely you have nothing to hide," Cordelia added evilly. She nudged Daphne, gesturing for her to hand the ring over to Drusilla.
With everyone’s eyes on her, Drusilla started to break out in cold sweat. Her pupils darted back and forth, scanning the crowd that seemed to be closing in on her. Her breath started to grow short― she needed a way out and fast.
Then, like a ray of sunlight streaming in through a sea of stormy clouds, Drusilla saw her saving grace.
"King Atticus! Prince Nathaniel!"
