Steampunk: Sixth Era Epic -
Chapter 867 - 867 Divination, Princess and Agent
Shard initially just wanted to have a casual chat with Miss Sylvia before returning to the party. After all, Mr. Benhart was still waiting for him, and he was also keen on getting more local news from the "Headland Bats".
However, once they started talking about their respective incomes, the conversation seemed to flow endlessly. Despite being a lady of high society and elegance, Miss Sylvia, just like Shard, was troubled by not having a stable and presentable income.
Both of them, being Circle Sorcerers, often had large amounts of unexpected income, but they both preferred the kind of very stable income that, although small each time, came regularly every week.
During their chat, Miss Sylvia once again confirmed Shard's visit to this city was for the "Lake Goddess", so the young Grand Witch proposed to do a divination for him. Although she wasn't a witch adept in divination, she did have some divination skills.
Using the divination cards Shard was familiar with, Miss Sylvia's divination process involved Shard randomly writing down three two-digit numbers, taking their average, discarding the decimal, and then counting down to the corresponding card from the top of the deck.
This card, along with the four cards above and below it, totaling nine cards, were taken out together. They were then calculated based on today's date and the current time, leaving only three cards. Shard then randomly selected one of the three cards, and this complex yet interesting divination method made him very curious, so he chose the middle card.
Miss Sylvia turned over the card, which showed a red-nosed jester holding a red gift box wrapped with a ribbon. Shard blinked at the jester's hat, feeling a thousand emotions at once.
"Divination Card - Unexpected Gift, a good omen."
The witch smiled and said to Shard:
"This card means that the result you are pursuing may not be found in the direction you are looking. But when you turn around by chance, you'll find the answer has already appeared by your side. The card corresponds to the moon phases of Silvermoon full, Yellowmoon waning, and Redmoon crescent, and in the astronomy, it belongs to the Jester Constellation's Spring 23:00 position. Diviners consider it a rather good divination result."
"By my side?"
Shard looked around but didn't find any divinity under the soft sofa cushion:
"Well then, I hope I can find the answer soon, though I'm not quite optimistic..."
Knock knock knock~
Just as he was speaking, there was a sudden knock on the door. Shard immediately shut his mouth, and Miss Sylvia frowned at the door:
"It's Margaret. It seems her speech is over, time flies."
She was somewhat displeased at the interruption:
"Margaret needs to stay in the banquet hall until she boards the floating airship tonight. After all, this is her farewell party. Now she's come to find me, probably to discuss the departure time. Shard, you better avoid her for now."
"Alright."
Shard looked around the room, then eyed the wardrobe in the corner. Hiding in the washroom was risky, but he was sure no one would open the wardrobe.
He got up to go over but thought for a moment, then took out Lecia's prank note with the phrase "Purple Cabbage" written on it and casually threw it on the red carpet between the sofa and the coffee table:
"Please help explain that this note was here before you entered the room."
"No problem."
Miss Sylvia didn't ask more questions and watched Shard hurriedly rush to the wardrobe. After confirming the wardrobe door was closed properly, she gestured for her maid to open the door.
Outside the door was indeed Princess Margaret, dressed in full regalia and wearing a silver crown:
"Teacher."
She greeted at the door before entering with her entourage. Approaching the sofa, she first noticed the divination cards laid out on the table and the half-drunk cup of tea:
"Teacher, did you have a guest just now?"
She asked curiously, and Miss Sylvia nodded:
"Yes, a very important guest."
The princess sat down and blinked as she clearly felt the warmth on the sofa, indicating the guest hadn't left when she knocked. She discreetly looked around the room, feeling that both the washroom and wardrobe were likely hiding places, but given the importance of the guest, most likely they were in the washroom.
"I hope I didn't disturb you."
Princess Margaret Anjou said softly, relieved to see Miss Sylvia shake her head. She knew how extraordinary her nominal tutor was.
Just as she was about to discuss the arrangements for taking a carriage to the steam hover zeppelin after the banquet, she noticed a note lying on the floor:
"Oh, what's this?"
The maid picked up the note that was face down, and Miss Sylvia said:
"Since entering this room, I haven't sat where you are now. The previous guest likely saw it but didn't pick it up, probably thinking it was unimportant."
Princess Margaret curiously took the note. After just a glance, her expression changed drastically.
"What's wrong?"
Miss Sylvia asked curiously. The princess pursed her lips tightly and then put the note away:
"Nothing."
Though her face looked bad, she still didn't want to say much to Miss Sylvia, to prevent past events from ruining her impression in Sylvia's eyes.
"Teacher, could you divine the origin of this note for me? I think it might have been left by the servants who cleaned the room."
The princess whispered, and Miss Sylvia nodded:
"There are two cards left on the table that haven't been turned over. Go ahead and turn them over."
The princess, with long pale golden hair, cautiously turned over the first card. The card showed the number six.
"Divination card - Spirit Number 6?"
Miss Sylvia became interested:
"I am best at decoding Spirit Numbers. Margaret, please wait a moment, let me calculate it for you."
"No, teacher, do you think... this represents MI6?"
Princess Margaret Anjou asked with a troubled expression, and Miss Sylvia wanted to laugh but held back:
"Yes, it's possible, after all, the agents of Draleon are indeed excellent... Go ahead and turn over the other card."
The princess nodded and turned over the other card. On it was a majestic eagle standing atop a high cliff.
"The Summit Eagle, it indicates that your ambitions will continue to expand, but it will not lead to bad outcomes."
Miss Sylvia interpreted again, but Princess Margaret Anjou uneasily stared at the card, finally exhaling a long breath after at least half a minute:
"Teacher, the card shows a grey-headed eagle."
"Yes, in this edition of the divination cards, the 'Summit Eagle' card shows a grey-headed eagle. The set I used before had a twin bald eagle..."
The witch looked curiously at her student:
"You don't think this card refers to the appearance of the note here, and that it's related to our legendary agent, do you?"
Princess Margaret nodded with difficulty:
"In the autumn, I ventured to Midshire Fort City and actually met Mr. Gray Hawk. Yes, I'm quite certain it was him. He completed that difficult task and even diverted MI6 for me. I tried to recruit him, but he never contacted my people in Tobesk. This gentleman doesn't seem so easy to recruit."
"Actually, I just don't need money at the moment, so I didn't claim the £1,000."
Shard, hidden in the wardrobe, thought to himself, genuinely admiring Miss Sylvia's divination skills. The diviners in this world always manage to produce exceptionally accurate results, but the problem is that most of the time, those results are interpreted wrongly. This time, however, Princess Margaret had actually interpreted them correctly.
"I think I understand now."
The princess clutched the note tightly in her hand:
"Before this banquet, Mr. Gray Hawk must have already arrived in Huntington. He and MI6 engaged in many battles in the shadows, of which I am unaware, while I was resting, reading, and socializing, he was carrying out tasks related to the visiting group."
She unfolded the crumpled note:
"This note appearing now, in front of me, I can hardly imagine the complex and dangerous stories behind it."
It wasn't complicated; Shard had simply thrown it onto the carpet.
"I also can't imagine how many conspiracies originally surrounded this note."
There were actually no conspiracies; it was just that Lecia was unhappy about her dating time being taken up and wanted to 'get back' at the princess of the Kingdom of Carsonrick.
"You make a good point. It seems the Grey Gloves Organization's Gray Hawk is indeed very capable."
Shard, hidden in the wardrobe, admired that Miss Sylvia, at that moment, managed not to laugh.
"Teacher, I believe my judgment is not wrong. I have already planned to recruit this ace agent and even specifically asked my father to order the Grey Gloves to have the Gray Hawk, originally in a latent phase, secretly protect me during this visit."
"How come I didn't know about this?"
Shard, in the darkness of the wardrobe, thought, and then realized that the order wouldn't come through so quickly, but he would probably soon receive one of those peculiar letters again.
"Since that gentleman could appear before me in Midshire Fort, I believe he will appear in Tobesk as well. By then, we can determine whether there is indeed a conflict between him and MI6 behind this note."
Princess Margaret said firmly, convinced that her judgment was correct. Moreover, she planned to hand the note to the Grey Gloves members accompanying the visiting group. Perhaps MI6 had already planted people in the visiting group.
Because of their discussion, Shard immediately realized that the so-called 'accompanying secretary,' Baron Lewis, was actually the leader of the Grey Gloves squad. Therefore, even before the visiting group arrived in Tobesk, he had already contributed to Director Anlos, who highly appreciated him.
Of course, Shard wouldn't directly inform MI6 of this information, at least not for now. After all, he wasn't truly a Draleon person. While he received a salary from MI6, he also owed a debt of gratitude to Detective Sparrow.
So, this time, he still wanted to achieve a "win-win" scenario, similar to the time when he was transmitting intelligence as a Big City Player.
[You want to win twice again?]
A laugh from "her" echoed in his ear.
"Of course not, it's for Grey Gloves and MI6 to both win."
Shard whispered in his heart, hidden in the darkness.
