The latter smiled and shook her head: "Sir, unless I lock you in a closet, your very presence is an extremely dangerous weapon. Compared to you, the revolver in your holster is as cute as a child."
After making the playful remark, the elderly lady stood up: "I am Lillian·Marlene, dear Mr. Malin, what brings you here today?"
"I’d like to know where Lieutenant Harsan·Chandler’s hometown is, I mean my subordinate, Harsan·Chandler. I need to find him for a matter," Malin said, taking out a potion made from the fruit of the World Tree from his pocket and placing it on the table: "A small sip each day can improve the ladies’ health and also their skin."
The last sentence was too powerful a weapon, and the ladies on duty immediately happily accepted the gift, and that elderly lady also found the hometown of Harsan·Chandler for Malin.
Nearly two hundred kilometers southwest of Copenhagen, in the southern part of the Free City of Danpu, there’s a major town called Koser Town, considered to be a transportation hub for land trade with the southern countries.
"Thank you, madam." Malin smiled, took the old lady’s hand in his, and traced the emblem of the Goddess of Harvest Church on it, at the same time a transport portal was opening up behind him.
It was only then that the old lady seemed to understand as she widened her eyes: "Sir, what exactly do you need Harsan·Chandler for?"
"Harsan·Chandler is under my command. I heard he returned home for five days, neither writing letters nor any messenger mentioned anything. I think there’s something fishy," Malin said as he took two steps back, making a noble’s bow: "If I’m not mistaken, the Dole Vince family seems to be the lord of the town. What is their relation to the Vince family in The Capital?"
Malin’s smile made the old lady frown, but she eventually gave the answer: "They are a branch family, Mr. Malin."
"Thank you, Lady Lillian." Malin smiled, waved his hand, and doffed his hunting cap in a noble’s salute: "Goodbye, madam, may you and your companions be happy every day."
After speaking, Malin smiled and stepped into the transport portal.
......
Constantine was sitting in his command post, and the Marshal engrossed in a card game with junior officers noted his young adjutant Link·Svenson entering the command post. He came before the old Marshal and nodded, "It has been confirmed that Mr. Malin appeared at the military staff headquarters. He inquired about where Harsan·Chandler was, and then left through the transport portal."
The old Marshal nodded and set down his cards: "I concede, gentlemen, that’s enough cards for today."
The clear sign of eviction made the three lieutenants stand up, salute the Marshal, then walk out of the command post.
Meanwhile, Constantine walked over to the border map and looked towards Koser Town.
This wasn’t any barren land; as a town in the south of the kingdom, the land around Koser Town could yield wheat, and there were two major landlords in the town. One was the Dole Vince family, acting as the lord and also mayor of the town, owning nearly forty percent of the town’s land.
And Harsan·Chandler, as a member of the State Church, his family owned thirty percent of the marginal land to the north of the town. It was impossible for the Chandler family to pose a threat to the Dole Vince family, who were the lords.
But things changed two years ago. As the second son in his family, with one deceased elder brother and two younger brothers, his two younger brothers were followers of the Goddess of Harvest Church. Starting two years ago, the Church began sending teams to help followers improve their fields. As a result, Chandler’s marginal land yielded sixty percent of the town’s wheat last year; this year was even more incredible, reporting an unheard-of seventy-five percent during a minor crop failure year, outproducing the previous year.
The human heart is always twisted by desire and greed. They forget what’s theirs by right and what they should not reach for.
"The other two Marshals aren’t involved, are they?"
"No, sir, besides that, Marshal Sergei did not make a sound either. My brother and Lee have had disputes, he thinks doing so would look indecent."
"It’s not indecent, child. The world is survival of the fittest. The error lies with the weak being weak; they cannot protect themselves," said Constantine as he took out a cigarette case and his adjutant lit it for him.
Then Constantine shook his head, "But this time, the Dole Vince family struck an iron plate. They might think eliminating Harsan·Chandler would mean the Chandler family couldn’t turn the tables, but they forgot about Chandler’s two younger brothers. That is the real cause of their misguided course."
"Yes, sir, Harsan·Chandler is a member of the National Church, his life and death indeed matter to Mr. Malin, but if he finds that he’s not dead, there’s room for turnaround. But if Mr. Malin finds those two kids are dead... I can’t imagine the extent of cruelty that the red-robed High Priest of the furious Goddess of Harvest Church might commit."
With that, Link also sighed, looking at the map and Koser Town: "After today, it seems there will no longer be any presence of the Dole Vince family."
"What about the Vince family, do you think the news has reached them?" asked Constantine.
