Chapter 844: Section 560: Walking with You (Part 2)
He opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling for a while before Malin remembered that he had already left the battlefield.
Today was his second day back in Copenhagen, and his achievements were already being celebrated around the world. The High Priest of the Church of the Goddess of Harvest had shone the Holy Light of the Lord of Justice on the battlefield, purifying a Chaos Demon that had breached the front lines, which sounded like a tale from a fantasy world.
However, when people mention the name of this High Priest, they can only smile knowingly—look, everyone thinks the same, Malin Gaiate, the hero against Chaos.
Malin turned his head and glanced at Lulu, who was looking at him, and he sighed.
"Malin, my dear, why do you sigh?" the girl asked curiously.
"Being a hero is really tiring," Malin said with a lament looking at the ceiling.
"Weren’t you happy when you were giving the report at the plaza yesterday, and last night at the reception, you were still chatting so animatedly with those young people?" Lulu argued.
"I did that to secure victory. In fact, I’m a very lazy person. I initially started writing novels just to make some money and earn some royalties, and then live a simple life," Malin said, and then got up to dress as Lulu watched.
"You say you’re lazy, but where are you going now?" Lulu was puzzled.
"To see off a child, the one I told you about before who wanted to meet the great hero." Malin said with a sigh of melancholy, as fate is so ruthless. That child is said to be cursed, and no treatment from the Church could help her.
She was being buried today, and Malin was going to bid her farewell, for the child who saw him as a hero and for himself too.
For some reason, Malin always felt that this child seemed familiar.
No, it’s not that she looked like someone, but her tone, her gaze, they all resembled someone Malin knew.
But Malin couldn’t remember who that was, nor could he recall exactly who it might be.
Malin asked himself over and over, but never found any answers. It must be someone Malin was very familiar with, but he just couldn’t remember... why.
"I’ll accompany you."
"No need, you better rest."
After refusing Lulu’s offer to come along, Malin just wanted some quiet time alone.
"Alright then, take care on your way," Lulu said, waving an arm.
Malin smiled and nodded, putting on his coat and walking out of the bedroom.
On the corridor, he opened a teleportation portal and dived in.
The next second, Malin stepped out of the transport node and tossed a Mage Coin to the young Mage on duty, an old currency issued by the Mage Tower, heavier and sturdier than paper money.
Stepping out of the gate, Malin looked at Carterburg in the snowstorm and with a sigh, headed towards the Church’s newly built large graveyard in the suburbs.
The graveyards before in Carterburg were too small, so the major Churches decided to establish a large graveyard at the foothills in the east of the city. The child’s funeral was there today.
On his way, Malin greeted a few old police officers and then left the city gate, walking along the newly repaired mountain road towards the graveyard, where he saw a Snow Leopard.
"Madam, over here," Malin smiled and called out to her.
The Snow Leopard stood up, taking small steps to Malin’s side, rubbed against his trouser leg then followed him all the way.
Malin was curious, he didn’t know why Spotty Madam was waiting here for him, but since he met her, he didn’t mind feeding her some jerky.
The madam happily ate the jerky and slowed her pace entering the graveyard, carefully walking beside Malin.
Malin saw Colin, his senior brother mumbling words while looking down at the grave until his assistant noticed Malin approaching and quietly reminded Colin. So Colin looked up at his junior brother.
"Why are you here?"
"To see this child off."
Malin reached the grave, staring at the lowered coffin, and finally with Colin, they covered the poor girl with soil.
"May the Goddess grant her happiness in her next life," Colin said, then the assistant reshaped the mud and turned it into stone.
Fio then approached Malin with a little flower.
Finally, Malin placed the flower on the tombstone, which bore the name of the child.
Susu Tusk.
The epitaph reads—I bloomed in my short life; what about you?
Malin pursed his lips and eventually touched the small Goddess’s emblem at the top of the tombstone.
Goodnight, child, there will come a day when we all rest in eternal sleep.
After asking about the battle conditions, Colin embraced Malin, and Malin’s master took his assistants and left first; his affairs were many, and Malin understood.
After seeing them off, Malin looked at the tombstone before him and noticed Spotty sitting on the stone slab, whimpering as if in sorrow.
Malin thought for a moment and simply sat down on the ground, stroking Spotty’s head.
As the snowstorm grew fiercer, Spotty eventually stood up and walked toward the cemetery exit.
"Madam, will we meet again?" Malin asked impulsively.
Spotty turned her body around and nodded.
Yes, Malin, my master.
Malin was surprised at first and then chuckled, "You’ve become legendary, madam, and you’ve awakened your spiritual energy."
Yes, my master, farewell. You came to bid farewell to Miss Susu; she would certainly be very happy.
After saying this, Spotty walked into the snowstorm without looking back.
Malin stood up and eventually chose to leave too; he picked another path to exit the cemetery.
Even a spirit that received just a few villagers’ reverence like Spotty could ignite the Psychic Flame and become legendary. The world is truly becoming more dangerous as Subspace grows ever closer.
What should we do, what can we do? For the first time, Malin felt the shortcomings of being a mortal.
Could it be that only by becoming a deity could one save this world?
Malin didn’t know, for him, the world had become too unfamiliar.
·················································
Watching the departure of the human and beast in the snowstorm, an ordinary-looking young man appeared at the spot where they had just sat. He was holding a small box with several cracks on it, yet the pastries inside looked as good as new, their time reversed by the power of a deity.
He placed the box of pastries on the stone slab.
"I’m sorry, Susu, this is the last box of glutinous rice pastries I could find," Nameless said, silently watching as the pastries gradually disappeared, then he sighed.
"You made a vow once, the balance of Fate could not be equalized, you sacrificed your life, your future, even all your potentially destined descendants, but still, it was not enough. In the final moments, you said you would be unnamed in this world, so the world forgets you, no one remembers your sacrifice and contribution, even that young man’s memory was altered under the rule... You are indeed cruel, Miss Fate."
"That is Fate, I never mind whether someone can break destiny because those who break fate have unconsciously acquired a new destiny. No one can exist alone, Nameless, you are really kind to the mortal me," the slim girl standing next to Nameless smiled, holding the last piece of pastry and eating it happily.
"I originally thought you would sacrifice yourself, but I didn’t expect the planet beneath our feet chose you... Miss Fate, Malin, He was the one you pulled from that time, right?" Nameless spoke, yet his eyes were fixed on the epitaph on the tombstone: "You wrote a good epitaph for yourself."
"Yes, I wanted to see, he who shares the same emotions as the mortal me, to what extent he would dedicate himself to this world," the girl swallowed the last pastry and nodded with a smile: "When I was mortal, I was such a girl who liked to smile, I too had thought about how I will eventually leave this world, at that time, I thought it would be nice if he could be with me..."
With that, the girl sighed.
"Subspace is drawing increasingly closer to our world, maybe this time or the next Tide of the Dead, our world will be completely exposed to Subspace, the coordinates of this planet will be permanently marked, then... I may not be able to fulfill my promise with Susu."
"It’s alright, Nameless, I know you’ve tried your best. All the efforts of the mortal me are ultimately in vain. The fire of civilization will eventually extinguish, I might turn into an Evil God," the girl looked at the tombstone.
"Why give up? Have you forgotten the promise made by Malin’s father to you?" asked Nameless.
The girl smiled and shook her head at the question.
"He failed, he mutated, in the end, he chose to throw himself into a star one and a half billion kilometers away from us to avoid exposing the coordinates of his hometown in his mind... We will ultimately fail, the tragedies of the ordinary world are even more brutal, I may not even have the chance to become an Evil God..."
"No, this world will not be so, Malin’s father chose a different path, you also chose a different path, under such guidance Malin came... He will not accept failure," Nameless said looking at the tombstone.
"...Admit defeat, Nameless, I will protect this civilization until the last moment, and you, you can leave here, you have your own world," the girl said as she squatted down and touched the tombstone: "I’m actually quite envious of the mortal me, she doesn’t know her efforts will ultimately fail, she’s obsessed with her sacrifices, she doesn’t even have the courage to say goodbye to Malin, she naively thought she was upholding her vow, it’s already meaningless, this world will eventually be destroyed, that is the fate I practiced."
Nameless shook his head, his form scattering with the wind.
His Miss Fate touched the tombstone until the snowstorm dispersed her.
