"What’s going on, how did these guys get here?" Looking through the lifted curtain at the street, Casaman’s colleagues were full of confusion.
They didn’t understand why the Farol Principality’s Public Safety Action Department would suddenly act and surround their block as night fell, then begin inspections.
"Have we been exposed?" asked a Dwarf from the Northern District, puzzled, "That shouldn’t be the case, we’ve kept a low profile the past few days for the operation’s success."
"No, it doesn’t look like we’ve been exposed; if we had been, they wouldn’t be searching for us like this, but would have directly stormed us with troops..." A human member who had always lived locally countered the Dwarf’s worry, "It seems like a temporary patrol, targeting all the rental properties. I saw that young man, he’s inspecting the houses rented to outsiders."
"Patrol?" the Dwarf put down the curtain, turned to the human, and asked, "What do you mean?"
"Temporary patrol. Since that Prince Malin arrived, he has enforced this method on people like us. For inspections of rental homes, you all should go to the underground level. If they see too many outsiders, they’ll definitely become suspicious." Standing by the open door, the human said to the Dwarf, "Where is the Sect Hierarch?"
"Upstairs, I’ll bring him and everyone else down." The Dwarf said and then ran upstairs; his hefty weight producing a thumping echo on the floor.
"Should I open the floor, Hills?" Casaman asked his kinsman named Hills.
He nodded, "The entrance is between the kitchen and the living room in the hallway. Go there, turn the wall sconce ninety degrees to the left. After taking everyone down, don’t forget to reset the door."
"No problem." Casaman walked into the hallway, turned the sconce, and once the cover slid away to reveal the steps leading downward, the people from the second floor had already come down. They quickly descended, showing no surprise at the officials’ routine action.
"Casaman, you come down too," the Sect Hierarch said from the back, looking at Casaman.
"No, as a tenant, Hills needs me present. I can claim the other companions are out to play, but in any case, one should stay. I’m more experienced in dealing with them. Besides, I need to maintain my persona. I’m now a painter, a painter in the midst of creation should not leave his country," Casaman declined his sect hierarch’s kindness.
"Then be careful yourself," said the Sect Hierarch, without further ado, turning and walking down the steps.
Casaman restored the cover, then walked out of the hallway.
"You must be mad, Casaman, you’re not a real painter," Hills frowned at his colleague.
Casaman smiled, "To tell the truth, I’m quite adept at handling these fellows. Besides, as your tenant, I shouldn’t always have an alibi for being absent. Otherwise, it’d be quite a scene if ever mistaken for a spy from another country."
"...Whatever you say, just don’t mess things up," Hills sighed, then smiled – it was a well-known joke that one of their sect’s safe houses in the Northern Kingdom had been undone by such unfortunate circumstances, the painter in charge of that safe house was always away, and the National Security of the Northern Kingdom arrested him as a spy from another country.
"I have better judgment in this than you do," said Casaman, raising his eyebrows. In his sight, the young man in the Public Safety Action Department’s black uniform was approaching with a giant.
"Why would he bring a giant along?" Hills expressed his doubt.
"Maybe it’s like those rich folk who like to walk with a big dog," Casaman said dismissively with a laugh.
This analogy pleased Hills, who nodded with satisfaction, "Your explanation is amusing, fitting for someone who has lived in the city of Regensburg."
"Ha, don’t remind me of Regensburg. If I hadn’t run fast, I’d have died there, the damned Sydney Public Safety Bureau... it looks like Farol Principality just copied their methods, a bunch of damn bastards, but it’s good for us," Casaman said.
"Why do you say that?" asked Hills, displaying just the right amount of perplexity on his face.
"If he really came looking for trouble, he wouldn’t bring a giant. They’re good for a brawl, but for search operations, wouldn’t a half-human be better? So I think this must be a newcomer, sent by their department to patrol a low-risk district. We’re safe," Casaman mumbled these thoughts and, seeing the young man and his big ’dog’ approaching, doffed his hat, "Good evening, sir, can I help you with something?"
......
Jack Reed, a rookie at the Farol Principality’s Public Safety Action Department, had today been entrusted with a serious task – to conduct a superficial patrol at several locations on a particular street.
Within the action department, it was almost certain that one of these locations had issues, but to avoid startling the snakes, a newcomer was assigned for the task. Likewise, Jack had received specific instructions to complete the patrol without any incidents.
In other words, no mishaps allowed, even if you spot something, you must pretend not to see it.
Thus, Jack ended up calling a giant from the action team as his assistant. These big fellows were good at raiding a house and chopping a few people up, but if you want them to inspect houses and uncover something, that wasn’t a giant’s job.
