Chapter 546: Chapter 375: The Story of Fate (3)

Malin didn’t manage to wait for some old man to get up, and as the train had already started moving, he ultimately decided to place the saddle on Spotty’s back. He then rode her to leap off the train, took up his bow and arrows, and began pursuing a herd of yellow deer— emergency rations and Spotty’s family’s meat consumption had been speeding up lately, so Malin had to start hunting, or else the emergency rations might just have to sacrifice themselves heroically, as the term suggests.

After shooting down three yellow deer, Malin managed to control the rest of the herd and tossed them into his own sub-plane—don’t forget, Ails’ originally desolate sub-plane now had birds singing and flowers blooming. It was better to let them reproduce in there for fresh meat later on.

With his prey in tow, he caught up to the train—the steam train wasn’t too fast, and Spotty, being one of the few high-speed Spirits, had initially been able to jump onto the train thanks to her speed.

Back in the last carriage, Malin handed the game over to Matilda for processing. After removing the saddle, Malin petted Spotty for a while, then took the piece of meat Matilda passed to him, first feeding Spotty, then the emergency rations, followed by the leopard cubs.

After feeding the leopard cubs, Malin helped Big-Eared Fox process the deer meat, washed his hands, and with the little leopard cubs following at his feet, carried them into the resting carriage.

The girls were organizing the complete manuscripts of the Age of Great Destruction that Malin had written. These manuscripts would be able to fully supplement the vast geographical knowledge and information of that period, which the current Deep Divers weren’t aware of.

This knowledge was something that Malin had specifically spent half a night writing out. Transforming into a manuscript-writing machine, he had done his best. He hoped that the person coming to collect the manuscripts in the next city would understand their importance. If he lost them, Malin would only be able to have him dictate the entire manuscript—roughly one hundred thousand words. He hoped he would enjoy that.

Maya, seeing the little leopard cubs in Malin’s arms, happily hugged Malin.

"Maya! Don’t cling to Mr. Malin. Let him help too," Lillim said with a smile.

"No, Brother is so cute today, he’s all mine," the Leopard Girl said, wrapping her tail around Malin and declaring ownership all the while.

Malin synchronized in acting cute—his paternal lineage not only brought with it some minor troubles due to being cute but mostly advantages, such as the girls liking to sleep holding the adorable Mr. Malin.

So they say, only children make choices.

Cute and handsome, I want them both.

......

And so the girls buried their heads in work for another hour, until Jessica could no longer bear it: "Is there still so much left? I need to rest for a bit. Mr. Malin is mine now, Maya."

Thus, the girls handed over Malin, and Jessica, holding Malin and the little leopard cubs in her arms, discovered that he and they had fallen asleep again.

"Another deep dive?"

"No, just purely asleep. Mr. Malin’s paternal physical constitution is a weakness," said Faye.

"Mr. Malin has been working hard these days," said Clovis, flipping over a page of the manuscript. "By the way, I heard that the next town is that gentleman’s territory?"

"Yes, that’s him, a very interesting and fair Knight," Matilda said. "I grew up listening to stories about him."

"I think, based on the reputation, he and Mr. Malin will surely get along," Faye said, as she neatly arranged a chart in her hands and then used it to switch for a manuscript. "By the way, Jessica, take Malin to the bedroom. We’re about to cross Eagle Gorge. Don’t let those flat-furred beasts wake him up."

"Mm," Jessica stood up, carrying Malin toward the bedroom.

......

Malin sat up groggily, finding himself in a different bed again.

The little leopard cubs were wandering around the spacious room with soft blankets, meowing like kittens, which made Malin realize he had actually brought the little cubs with him.

Malin had to stop these little brats. Young Spirits were much smarter than their wild beast counterparts, racing swiftly to Malin’s feet. He picked them up onto the bed before he began to survey the room before him.

It was still the world from before the great destruction.

With a sigh, Malin called for service, but this time there was no artificial intelligence responding to him.

Malin could only check the room until he finally found a tablet. After powering it on, he discovered it was an operating system with various functions, such as food—so, he ordered a serving of food. Soon, a mechanical body arrived carrying a small bowl filled with mashed potatoes which, in the system’s view, was probably a portion suitable for Malin’s weight.

Malin ate it, and the taste was bland... no, it was more accurate to say it was completely tasteless.

This made Malin somewhat puzzled, so he browsed through the tablet for a while and found a command called ’open the viewing platform’.

He pressed it, and the wall to his left began to rise, then got stuck almost immediately.

With no other choice, he had to lie on the carpet to look outside, coming eye to eye with a gigantic eye. Malin made a snap decision to close the viewing platform. The heavy armor plate fell directly, severing the claw that the huge eye was reaching in with, trapping it in the room.

Looking at the claw only twenty centimeters from his nose, Malin wiped his forehead—a close call.

Then he reached out to pick up the claw... It seemed to be normal flesh and blood. Malin threw it aside, then noticed the little brats around it began to gnaw at the flesh on the claw.

Malin was puzzled, but he didn’t stop them. The little ones had an instinctive wariness about whether something was edible or not. Besides, it was Deep Dive now, and they were soul bodies. As long as Malin was fine, they couldn’t possibly be harmed.

The little ones quickly devoured the flesh on the claw and didn’t seem to have any problems. Having had their fill, they lay down on the blanket.

Malin started to examine the claw bones, finding them to be strong enough—at least, he couldn’t break them with his bare hands.

Was it a large Spirit? Malin curiously compared the leg bone and realized that it was about sixty millimeters thick. In other words, if that feathered creature just now was a Spirit, it must have been nearly three meters in actual length, and as for the height... perhaps about two meters?

Anyway, Malin did not wish to encounter it again. After all, it was not easy to go on a Deep Dive, so he decided it was better to look for new information instead.

So, with that thought, Malin turned on the television and flipped through the channels, all showing static.

It seemed the television signal was gone—for good. Yes, the television signal. In this era, digital television almost achieved global coverage. Malin flipped through nearly two hundred channels and couldn’t see anything.

He threw the remote to Fio and let it continue flipping through channels while he started to peruse the tablet to see if there was anything else on it.

Then Malin fell silent as he looked at the first forum he opened.

The forum must have been local, the server still functioning, but the last update to a post was 30 years ago, and the most recent reply was 20 years ago.

The title was simple—’Is Anyone Still Alive?’

The reply was even simpler—’Only me left.’

The title and the reply were both by the same person.

For the first time, Malin felt what it was like to experience despair through a screen.
