Chapter 537: Chapter 368: Old Days (Part 4)

"Seventeen, we’ve got trouble,"

Malin led his people up to the third floor, and as they passed room seventeen, he spoke in a casual tone—as if the well-equipped Seventeen with the ability to make logical judgments should be aware of what living beings like them were facing.

Malin’s assessment was correct, and the armor humanized graciously nodded: "Failure experiment subjects confirmed, based on the Rights and Protection Act, I will open the passage upstairs. Please proceed through the corridor, I will hold back the failure experiment subjects for you."

"Failure experiment subjects?" Malin let Dante lead the way, then stood beside Seventeen, questioning, "Why are they called failure experiment subjects?"

"The first embryo of the failure experiment subjects originated from the Vahningen military base. You can find information about them in the computer documents upstairs. I’m responsible for safeguarding these secrets... please leave quickly, citizen, the failure experiment subjects are on their way up."

"Goodbye, Seventeen." Malin saw the zombies appear at the corner of the stairs. As he retreated, he fired two short bursts, hitting the zombies in their legs and abdomen. As they fell, they also blocked the pursuit of those behind them.

Malin hastened his step, noticing more and more slender long arms extending from the outside of the handrail.

As he ran, Malin pulled out another fire grenade, removed the pin, and tossed it behind him.

Illuminated aberrant zombies reached out from behind the railing. One opened its mouth to Malin, revealing twisted, sharp fangs.

Then Fio, holding Blood Roar, sliced through its neck. To clutch at its wound, the aberration released its grip and, bound by gravity, plummeted down the building.

"Hurry, Malin!" Dante stood in front of the steps, shouting loudly while shooting.

Malin emptied the rifle’s magazine, tossed the gun to Lorrin, unholstered his pistol—this time not bothering with the silencer—and raised the gun to fire at the glowing-headed zombies, the first bullet ricocheting off its slick skull.

As its head whipped back, the bullet plunged into its chin. This time, the zombie that couldn’t stop the bullet lost its life, released its grip on the railing, and fell towards the lower levels.

Behind him, the fire grenade ignited, engulfing the zombies that had climbed over the railing in flames.

Zombies climbed over the railing in front of Malin, turning to attack. Malin ducked down, avoided the lunge with a sliding maneuver, and swung his left hand open to ward off the attacking arms of the zombies.

As his slide began to decelerate, Melo, behind him, gave his master a boost and Malin, taking advantage of the momentum, aimed at the railing and emptied the pistol’s magazine in one breath, ejecting the empty magazine onto the floor, and reloaded with a full one.

Melo scooped up the empty magazine, leapt onto the left wall, then pushed off, flying over Malin’s head and returning the intruding zombies back over the railing, where it safely landed entwined with Fio’s delicate branches.

Malin rushed up the steps as the World Tree Saplings followed along.

The steps Malin had crossed began to retract into the wall.

The roars behind urged Malin to pick up the pace, and three steps from the top entrance, he saw the terror on everyone’s faces.

He jumped, turned mid-air, and Lorrin, at that moment, handed him the reloaded rifle.

As he did this, Malin tossed his pistol to Lorrin, who caught it and began shooting at the smooth-skinned zombie. The round-headed bullets from the pistol couldn’t pierce its skin but halted its chase, allowing Malin’s rifle to sound off.

He worked the action quickly, and his bullets hit the zombie’s chest in succession, the rifle rounds with far more kinetic energy than the pistol’s tore through the flesh, and Malin landed to empty the magazine, the last bullet entering the zombie’s forehead. Devoid of strength, it dropped to the lower floor.

The elevator’s door began to close.

"I can’t learn that move," Gold Ingots came over and tapped Malin lightly, "My Lord, you’re truly remarkable, even more so than the legends say."

Malin smiled, shook hands with the others who came over, and then looked at Dante: "Surviving is what matters, can we contact the outside world now?"

"No, it feels like we’re in a dwelling place here, but everything... all of it is something we’ve never seen before, extremely luxurious," he shook his head.

So Malin handed the rifle to Lorrin, and as soon as the elevator stopped, he was the first to jump out, then scanned the surroundings.

...Damn it, he recognized everything here—the sofa, the TV, the bed... But what the hell was this egg-like bed? And what’s with this round TV, not to mention the sofa floating like that....

Turns out, I’m the caveman here.

As Malin was contemplating this, a voice sounded: "Good afternoon, guests, Isabella is online, welcome to the Legrande Belview Hotel’s special floor. There’s one hour left until sunset, it’s a good day to enjoy the sunset, would you like me to open the windows for you?"

"Isabella, open them,"

Malin said.

Dante leaned in: "Isabella, I heard the name you mentioned. Do you know this mysterious woman, and how can you understand what she’s saying?"

"It’s related to the Transcendent Sequence, the knowledge of the old days is very dangerous," Malin said with a smile.
