Chapter 455: Section 209: To Capture Them All in One Fell Swoop
The young child sat in the chair, listening to her mother’s lullaby until the playful voices in her head ceased—until she felt her mother pick her up.
"Child, we’re leaving to meet our Fate."
She heard her mother’s footsteps, the sound of the door to the rooftop being opened, and even more distantly, laughter, conversation, and that... whisper that frightened her.
It was the whisper of Chaos, her mother always said that.
What Chaos was, Pam didn’t know, but when her mother mentioned the word, inside... there seemed to be flames of anger.
With her mother’s steps, the young child heard heavy breathing, that of a man named Doma, greedy, and his ever-present friends.
Friends, what were friends, multiple people? The mother never explained.
The sounds that reached Pam’s ears grew louder, she heard the neighboring sister’s dissatisfied retort.
"Father, why should I get close to that Malin?"
"Be it Doma or Peter, they are all cunning folk just trying to preserve themselves, my daughter, this city must not fall into their hands, at least, not before your father dies."
"...Alright, leave it to me."
Pam instinctively hugged her mother’s neck tighter, what were sister and Uncle Andre talking about, and who was Malin that she was supposed to get close to?
"Do not fear, my daughter, Fate has placed us upon this altar."
Pam grew more fearful, hugging her mother’s neck even tighter, feeling her mother’s cold face.
As her mother descended the steps, her manner of walking changed, Pam listening to everyone’s heartbeat, and as she heard the sound of the hinge turning, a distinctive heartbeat emerged from afar.
A light suddenly appeared in Pam’s pitch-black world.
It was a color Pam had never seen before; she raised her head, looking at the figure in the distance.
It appeared he noticed Pam, smiling at her.
Pam felt fear and dread leaving her—the closer she got, the warmer and more familiar it felt.
"Mrs. Martha, you’ve arrived, everyone has been waiting inside for you."
Pam released her hold on her mother’s arms, trying to keep upright, looking at the only companion in her dark world, who was smiling and opening his arms to her, "She’s a lovely child, isn’t she, Mrs. Martha?"
"No! Protect Mr. Malin!" someone screamed.
"The Black Bride! When did Mrs. Martha turn?!" someone else roared.
"Doma, you stupid pig!" yet another yelled.
"Get away! Pam! Bite the enemy of your mother!"
The mother screeched, and thus Pam released her hold, launching herself into the arms of the white figure her mother had defined as the enemy.
"Good child." He stroked Pam’s head, and she contentedly snorted.
......
Malin stroked the Baby Spirit in his arms, that had been completely purified, issuing a low murmur like that of a small animal, while the woman who had turned into the Black Bride had become a corpse on the wall.
The Nobles present dared not breathe a word, standing rigidly to both sides.
"Mr. Doma, I’ve indeed taken your gift to heart, very ingenious." Malin said with a smile, and the City Lord Peter standing on the other side seemed unsatisfied, stepping forward quickly, "Mr. Malin! This Doma Romsey must be a Chaotic Believer! He intended to present a Black Bride as a gift to you! It’s a blatant assassination attempt!"
"Don’t accuse people without proof, Peter!" the latter bellowed.
Malin, while stroking the Baby Spirit in his arms, said, "Mr. Doma, while I believe you’re not a Chaotic Believer, you need to explain what this is all about with Mrs. Martha."
"She was the wife of my good friend, I was preparing to help her find a good home. I heard you needed an assistant, and I thought someone like her would surely make the best assistant, " he explained, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Then a big X jumped under his feet.
"You wasted the mercy I gave you, I’m very disappointed, Mr. Doma. Bring him to the street lamp, his crime being an assassination attempt," Malin said, and as he finished, Victor, standing by his side, leaned in, "Mr. Malin, could you give Mr. Doma a chance to reform himself?"
"Your relative?" Malin asked the young man.
He nodded slightly then answered somewhat pleadingly, "Yes, Mr. Malin."
"Well then, Mr. Doma, you have one more chance; remember to thank Earl Victor." Malin said with a smile, "Now let me ask you another question, was Mrs. Martha’s husband’s death related to you?"
The room fell as silent as death, Peter’s faction of Nobles mostly looked at Doma with shocked expressions, and among the Nobles and Merchants near Doma, some faces also changed dramatically.
Doma was silent for a while, cursed, and then reached for the Revolver at his waist, but the next second, Fio hanging from the ceiling broke his wrist, then wrapped the Noble’s neck and dragged him up to the ceiling at a slow but determined pace.
"Victor, do you know, some people just don’t understand how to cherish the second chance others have made for them, I’m sorry, your relative has died."
"Your Excellency, I have no such relative." Victor bowed his head to Malin, not looking at Doma.
"Take all members of the Doma faction down, hand them over to the Lord of Justice Church for a thorough review. Since they could kill Mrs. Martha’s husband, they surely have other blood debts. Baron Anthony, send this message for me to the local Church’s Bishop, make sure to review them carefully and let no criminal slip through."
