Chapter 453: Chapter 307: Path of Fate (2)
When Malin hurried back to the Church, a team from the Mage Tower was already waiting in the hall, led by Clovis’s stepfather, whose standing locally in the Mage Tower had risen due to Clovis’s influence. He was now the commander of the second action team and had relayed the task to Lady Anna— the vetting work for the reclaimed area in the northern district of Farol.
Malin would only know the specifics once he got there. There were already troops in place, and according to Lady Anna, it was originally her responsibility, but she couldn’t be bothered to talk nonsense with those naive countryside Nobles and had her son-in-law come to lend a hand instead.
Malin said that only Lady Anna could say such a thing with a straight face. Even the high Nobles of the kingdom could only respond with a bitter smile and a shrug if a Legendary combat Mage spoke in such a manner—provided their power was insufficient.
However, with Lady Anna’s guarantee, Malin knew that both the Mage Tower and the Farol Principality’s troops would listen to him, which made things much easier.
Lady Anna probably wanted to see how the Gaiate family’s Malin would manage matters. Considering that, there was nothing more to say.
Upon stepping through the portal, the first person Malin saw was Galileo del Brunie, who smiled and nodded at Malin: "I trust you’ve been well, young Mr. Malin."
"I’ve been well, Mr. Brunie. What about your Apprentices?"
"It’s fine for the young ones to witness a battlefield, but they’re still too young to be dealing with Noble intrigues and trickeries. So, I only brought myself."
The old man explained with a smile and extended his hand to introduce two men beside him: "Baron Anthony and Baron Brent Tony."
"Greetings, Baron Anthony. It looks like we’re working together again," Malin said with a smile, extending his hand.
Baron Anthony shook Malin’s hand and nodded sincerely: "Your Excellency, good afternoon. Welcome once again to Farol."
Then came Baron Tony: "It seems my investment has been a great success, former Baron."
"Thank you for your support, Mr. Malin. Baron Anthony and I will be your sharpest sword and sturdiest shield!" The middle-aged man’s face was full of grateful smiles: "Welcome to Farol."
"All right, now that everyone is here, explain today’s mission to me."
"No, Mr. Malin, someone else will explain the mission to you today," said Baron Anthony.
After Baron Anthony spoke, Malin perked up his ears—he heard footsteps approaching. Turning toward the door, he saw a young man enter: "Sorry, I’m late."
"Count Victor, Mr. Malin has just arrived; your timing is not late at all," said Baron Anthony, whose affectionate words helped Malin deduce the identity of the newcomer.
Malin sized up the young man who looked rather youthful, without Elven or other heritages and likely to be a pure human. However, considering humans also had various bloodlines, Malin wasn’t sure what special abilities the young man might possess.
But one thing was clear—he didn’t seem to be an adversary.
"Hello, Mr. Malin," said the young man, extending his hand.
Malin extended his hand with a smile.
With a snap, the young man’s eyes rolled back in their sockets to the extreme.
"Your power is abrupt, but too weak. My subconscious counterattack completely overwhelmed you," Malin said as he slapped a Healing Spell on the fellow and then noticed a familiar feature on the young man’s face: "The Moriti family’s Richie, what is he to you?"
"My uncle," the young man replied, looking painfully at Malin. "I’ve heard my uncle mention you. I thought he was boasting."
"And now?" Malin asked with a smile.
"I really am an idiot, ah, damn, that hurts."
So Malin and his three assistants, old, middle-aged, and young, waited for two minutes, watching the boy finally gulp down a bottle of potion.
"All right, let me introduce our mission," said Earl Victor Moriti, who had suffered, but seemed not to take it to heart at all. Perhaps it was because Lady Anna’s infamy was too great, or perhaps because his family was famously heartless and lungless. Either way, this was good news for Malin, who wouldn’t have to waste energy killing naturals before screening and killing all the nobles in the city.
The mission was to liberate this city called Farol, but because there was concern that among these nobles and city representatives there could be Chaotic Infiltrators, the Farolians were ready to screen them.
Previously, the city named Rosslyn had been very tense because of Lady Anna’s arrival, but now that they heard of a change, these fellows seemed overjoyed and even expressed their wishes to hold a banquet to welcome the newcomer, His Excellency Malin.
Malin smiled when he heard this news.
"His Excellency Malin, what should we do?" asked Earl Victor, stating that with his three thousand soldiers and the support of the two barons and the Mage Tower, there was absolutely no need to worry about combat effectiveness. The city was said to be liberated, but in fact, it was still under siege until the end of the campaign, so they believed there wouldn’t be too many nobles in cahoots with Chaos.
Malin thought for a moment and made a decision, "Since they want to hold a banquet in my honor, let’s go."
"His Excellency Malin, I think there is no such thing as a good banquet," said the old mage Galileo del Brunie.
Malin liked that the old man could stand up and say such unpleasant truths; he could feel the old man’s goodwill. He certainly understood these admonitions.
Of course, Malin was not someone who went looking for death—"Don’t worry, I know what I should do. Tell the nobles that I will attend the banquet tonight, but the security for the banquet needs to be entrusted to you..."
Malin shared his plan with the four of them, and Baron Anthony was the first to jump out and praise it enthusiastically, "His Excellency Malin’s method is really good! I agree!"
"I agree too!" Though Baron Tony was but a newly minted baron, his trust in Malin prompted him to make his choice.
The old mage Galileo del Brunie didn’t speak; he just looked at Earl Victor.
The latter nodded, "A fine plan, I like it. Leave it to us to handle."
...
"Have you heard? Our new representative is a fifteen-year-old child. Lady Anna really dotes on her little son-in-law," commented the City Lord of Rosslyn, standing at the entrance of the manor where the banquet was taking place, to his City Prefect beside him.
The latter nodded vigorously, "Yes, she spoils him too much."
The men let out a knowing laugh.
Then the City Lord cast another look at another man on the side, "Baron Reed, what do you think of this new representative Mr. Malin?"
"I hear he’s a formidable guy."
"No matter how formidable, he’s just a fifteen-year-old child," someone said.
"Perhaps he hasn’t even grown all his hair yet," another person voiced, eliciting a malicious chuckle.
Then the men once again began their knowing laughter.
Until someone noticed the approaching carriages, "Here comes the party, gentlemen, please keep your dignity."
