Chapter 399: Section 265: Facing Directly (Part 3)_2

The second Chaos fell backward at this time, Mason shrank back into the trench, laughing and praising the sharpshooter behind him while dumping the spent casings from the nest and loading bullets into the revolver one by one.

After loading the bullets, Mason prepared to go to the left defensive line, but before walking away, out of professional reflex, he calculated for himself one last time.

·Have they come?

·Mason! Run! No! Too late!

The third time Mason heard the voice he was stunned for a moment, because he remembered... It was his own voice from childhood, his inspiration was warning him, and he... had never thought of it.

His consciousness was disturbed, and so was his divination—he held the bracelet in his hand motionless, then it suddenly began pointing to Mason’s right side of the trench.

Mechanically turning his head, Mason looked towards the far end of the trench, where at the bend, a white-haired middle-aged man slowly came into view.

"Arn Liansen... you traitor," Mason stared at the man.

He began to understand why Chaos was so frantically attacking this section of the defense.

They were looking for him, and they had found him.

Arn Liansen, his portrait hanged in that corridor, positioned before Mason’s, ranked fourth.

He was the first of Hoffman’s apprentices to betray him and walk the path of Chaos.

"Mason Wyman, my little junior, long time no see," the man’s face showed a satisfied smile, "Considering it, our mentor should also be dying; his time is short, so, I came looking for you, one is to cut off that damn lineage, and the other is to save you from the bitter sea."

His movements were like a precisely wound watch, each step measured, while Mason raised his revolver: "When the mentor picked us up, he gave us a way out, big brother was an abandoned infant with leg defects; second brother was an abandoned infant with a heart ailment; third brother was an abandoned infant, left hand twisted and deformed, and you... you couldn’t even smile."

"Yes, the previous me couldn’t smile, but after I devoutly converted to the Rightful Gods, I realized just how wonderful this world is, I could regain laughter, and you, after converting to the Rightful Gods, could become a true human again." Mason’s elder brother stood still not far from him: "Don’t you want to be a true human, look, Little Six, Little Nine, Eleven and Fourteen, they all came today."

Mason turned his head and saw his fellow apprentices had blocked every possible retreat path for him.

"Mason, come convert with me," the red-haired girl smiled at him.

"You always followed behind me, come on, we’re still the best partners," the blond young man said excitedly.

"Mason, you always said you wanted to marry me when you grew up, don’t you want to fulfill that wish?" the gray-haired woman looked at him.

"Mason, my good brother, come, don’t sacrifice yourself for Hoffman and his church," Mason’s friend of the same age walked towards him.

Mason began to laugh, in his left eye, the companions before him appeared just like yesterday, but in his right eye, they had completely transformed into Chaos, especially his once-favorite senior sister, who wasn’t even human anymore.

A Chaos Sorcerer, with the head of a bird, a body of feathers, a heart of Chaos, but none of the things Mason once cherished.

"I should have listened to the mentor more, should have returned sooner," he sighed and then pulled the trigger repeatedly at Arn Liansen.

Each time, the latter dodged the bullets at the very last moment.

Having emptied the cylinder, Mason threw the gun in front of Arn: "Why did you betray the mentor?"

"Because we didn’t want to become the new vessels," the five Chaos resoundingly replied in unison.

"Neither do I," Mason nodded and then, amidst Arn’s smile, in front of the woman’s open arms, surrounded by his companions’ smiles, this man’s appearance began to distort, horns grew out of his forehead, and his canines protruded from his lips.

The red-haired girl started clapping her hands.

The blond young man’s face was filled with joy.

His friend of the same age let go of his hand, tossing the soldier he had choked to death aside, ready to embrace his comrade.

And that gray-haired woman walked quickly towards Mason, while with a glance stopping Mason’s friend, she also opened her arms.

·My love.

A murmur rose in Mason’s mind.

·My partner.

Mason sighed, spread his arms, and embraced tightly the one he loved. He hugged her forcefully and, amid her cries of joy, he plunged his hands into her back, taking out her heart that was flowing with black blood.

Amid the screams and roars, Mason clambered out of the trench.

He stood up, spread his arms, and faced the direction of our sharpshooters.

This was the last choice of any warrior who did not wish to be completely transformed.

I did not want to become a vessel for the Evil God, but I wanted even less to become a dog of Chaos.

Since both were points of inevitable doom, why couldn’t I choose a death that would let me rest in peace.

Then, Mason felt as if he had been hit by something. In the last moments of his life, he knelt on the ground, and the bullet hole in his forehead did not allow this Level Five Transcendent to die instantly. But death was irreversible; he turned his head to look at the woman he had once loved the most.

She lay in a pool of blood, her face bearing pain, distortion, and, most of all, confusion, as if doubting her own judgment.

Foolish girl, what I liked was you as a human, not as a being of Chaos...

Mason panted, his head uncontrollably drooping.

Colin... I beg you... to fulfill our oath...

Mason eventually took one last breath and then crushed the petrified black heart in his hand.

No more thoughts, no more regrets, the person named Mason was gone, and his shell fell forward onto the ground, ultimately ignited by the Divine Bullet.

......

"Colin, I’m going back first," Margaret said, bidding goodbye to Colin at the front door.

Colin nodded with a smile, "You go back first, I’ll be fine once the relief person comes."

"I’ll prepare a bath for you," his beloved said with a smile, then walked out the door.

Colin, sitting behind the counter, leaned on the counter and raised an eyebrow at the young apprentices nearby, "Don’t worry, lads, you’ll have your day too."

"That doesn’t change the fact that we don’t have it now, Colin, you’re too much!" the older apprentices wailed.

"Think about it this way," Colin bluffed seriously. "I only have Margaret, while Malin has so many. He’s away now, you guys should be happy."

"He we can’t beat, but you we might!" the apprentices boldly expressed their daring.

"Heh, you’re just apprentices after all," Colin scoffed, crossing his legs, then taking a sip of the green tea handed to him by the Domestic Fairy—a good Thanan thing exchanged with the Sydney Trading Company for coffee.

Each party got what they needed, and the trade was always pleasant.

He took a sip of the tea and then noticed the vacant expressions of the apprentices, "Hey, you’re overreacting; it’s just very ordinary green tea." Colin felt these youngsters were being a bit too dramatic.

One of the apprentices raised his hand, pointing to the wall behind Colin, "There, a candle has gone out."

Colin turned his head to see one of the Everlight Candles emitting blue smoke.

It was his senior brother Mason Wyman’s Everlight Candle.

"There’s a name on the dog tags, Mason Wyman, do we have such a person in the Church?" one apprentice asked his companion, only to be met with shaking heads all around.

Colin leaped up from his chair, flipping up the counter and bursting forth, "Damn it! Watch this place! I need to find the master!" he screamed out orders to the apprentices, while hurrying toward the master’s office.

Passing through the hallway, he noticed the portrait of Mason Wyman, who watched him expressionlessly, just as he always had.

May the Lord have mercy.

Colin lamented inwardly and then could no longer contain the tears that began to flow from his eyes.

I will uphold the creed.
