Chapter 311: Chapter Two Hundred and Sixteen: Life is Like a Play (Part Two)
"You’re our Savior! Whoever betrays you, I will be the demon avenging you!" Liu Jin pulls out a checkbook, writes a string of numbers in it, and tosses it over to Engma, "Triple the price, I’ll pay it myself, Engma. Can you get another crate from the Dwarves? If you can, just wrap up the rest and give us this crate."
"I can try. I’m a regular at the Dwarf workshop; if they ask, I can say I need it for fishing." Engma nods and smiles at his co-conspirators, "I’m starting to feel confident, everyone."
"I’ll cover the cost of this crate. If two crates can’t take him down, then I’ll accept my fate!" Cohen grits his teeth.
"I feel the same. I’ve got an old revolver, the very old-fashioned kind with no registration or serial number. Who’s got the best shot?" Cassie looks around at the others.
"I’m quite good with guns," the Zhao family kid raises his hand.
"Then I’ll give the piece to you when the time comes, make sure you shoot accurately," Cassie says.
"Don’t worry, ever since I learned how to shoot, I’ve never missed a fifty-meter target," the Zhao family kid says and looks at Cohen, "In that case, we need to adjust our plans a bit. We have to set up the fishing gear in advance, and the guns need to be calibrated. Plus, we must find a suitable place for an ambush. So, could you delay your operation by two days? Otherwise, we won’t have enough time."
"No problem, my cousin’s injured, and I can use the excuse that I want to make it up to him and then have a legitimate reason to hang around in The Capital for two more days. Anyway, there’s half a month left until the trial’s deadline, I can wait for two days." Cohen says and looks at Engma, "You’ll be coming too this time. Try to gauge Malin’s character and temperament, so we can deal with him effectively."
"No problem, it looks like we’ve already won," Engma finally smiles, "I had lost all hope before."
"I felt the same. Anyone who encounters such a monster would be in despair."
"But at least we have a plan now, don’t we?"
With a new plan in mind, the small room is filled with an air of joy, and the young people start ordering food. Meanwhile, Liu Jin opens the window of the small room to ventilate the smoke-filled space and notices the extremely fine footprints on the sill outside.
Following the direction of the footprints, he spots a small squirrel, leaping toward the trees on the street.
"When did squirrels start appearing in the city?" The youngster is somewhat puzzled. In his experience, such small animals were only ever seen outside the city, in forests. In a city with a population in the hundreds of thousands, he had never seen such a creature.
"Whatever, come on, Liu Jin, order up. I love sweet and sour pork, get some of that!"
"Damn, you can eat that kind of meat? You’ve got some weird tastes, brother. Give me a plate of braised pork!"
"You guys are definitely going to end up as fat as pigs." Liu Jin turns around, deciding not to ponder where the squirrel came from or where it’s going.
......
Milani lands in a tree, humanely making sure the Demon Crystal that records images in the small pouch on his chest hasn’t had any accidents. He then secures the button and starts moving towards the North.
Leaping from tree to tree isn’t a big deal for Milani, being a squirrel, he excels at this kind of jumping. When he encounters trees far apart, separated by a whole street, he hops onto rooftops and then uses the ropes strung between them with flags as a thoroughfare.
A Thainese Cat might be a bit of a nuisance, but as a Spirit, Milani doesn’t fear any Thainese Cat. After beating up the lead Thainese Cat and giving a thrashing to the few creatures that wanted to attack him, Milani jumps onto a tree, carefully avoids a small cage trap, leaps past his own kind who are curiously trying to follow him but are soon left behind by the Spirit Milani.
Climbing onto the tree branches that jut out from the city wall, Milani uses them to reach the battlements. The small branch recoils, and by the time it returns to the wall, it has become a self-moving barrel big enough for him to hide in. Milani jumps into the barrel part and then duly starts resting.
Eventually, this self-moving branch brings him to his master.
Milani hopped onto his arm and took out a Demon Crystal from his small pouch, exchanging it for an Acorn.
Happy, he hopped aside and started nibbling on the Acorn, Milani noticed his master and his friend had started watching the contents recorded within the Demon Crystal.
A companion named Bippo came over, holding a larger fruit, and sat down next to Milani to start nibbling as well.
Then the two little ones heard laughter coming from their master.
......
"I knew this wasn’t going to be easy money, but I really didn’t expect it to be this hard to earn," said Malin with genuine amusement after watching the intelligence brought back by Milani, never before had he felt as delighted as he did today, watching these young people striving so hard to achieve their life’s goals was such a delightful performance.
"And you’re still laughing, when your life is at stake," Faye tugged at Malin’s ponytail, "Just hand this over to the investigative department and let them deal with it."
"No, Faye, you need to learn to respect these young people with dreams, although I can’t agree with their dreams, don’t you think it’s truly a pleasure to watch them perform? They want to kill me yet they approach me, they hate me yet they want to become friends with me, I think I should acknowledge such efforts, and then, go along with their performance to the end."
"...Do you want to deal with this by yourself?" Faye asked, furrowing her brow.
"Yes, I want to handle this by myself. I don’t want to fail their performance, so tomorrow and the day after, I’ll play along and feast well," Malin said, then looked at Faye, "You better not come, if you join, I’m afraid they won’t be able to carry on with the act. Then, if things turn violent on the streets, personally, I don’t mind, but it just seems somewhat unfair to the gentlemen who will have to clean up afterwards."
"If Logan were here, he would definitely say you’re thinking about pulling up the streetlights again," Faye mentioned with a smile, "I do feel like listening to you, but some idiot seems to have taken me too lightly, so I want to get back at them. I’m free tomorrow, my father will only return the day after, so I’ll join you for fun tomorrow."
"Spare them, Faye. Even a single dog has the right to dignity without insult," Malin felt that Faye coming along would be too much.
"Who’s the Hunter?" Faye looked at Malin, eyes gleaming with the dangerous light that only a Hunter would possess.
After thinking for a moment, Malin nodded, "You’re the Hunter."
"That’s right, tomorrow I’ll put on my most beautiful outfit, and yes, I need to dress you up too," As a Hunter, Faye naturally started preparing Malin, her prey.
"Wait a minute, I think this is fine," Malin interjected, "I have a new coat at the inn, just bring it back later when the carriage comes by."
"Who’s the prey?" Faye looking at Malin, her eyes sparkling with an affection a Hunter ought to have.
After a moment, Malin pointed at himself, "I’m the prey."
"That’s right, listen to me," Faye said, standing up and snapping her fingers, as the Rat-woman maids immediately peeked out from the side hall.
"Get ready, ladies, it’s time to dress up your Mr. Malin," Malin said, pointing at himself.
So the Rat-woman girls brought out clothes racks, some with wheeled standing mirrors, and others with fabrics and tools.
"Where are those seamstress ladies from your house?" Malin asked curiously.
"They are," Faye replied, then gesturing towards Malin, she added another line, "They are our family’s seamstress ladies."
