Chapter 264: Chapter 194: The Shadow of the Tree (Part One)_2
"We’ll know once we fire a shot," Mentor Amett Sayer said as he pulled out his revolver, but was stopped by Malin: "I have a better way."
Having said that, Malin drew out the combination of Blood Roar and Fio—You’ve all grown up, it’s time you learned to charge forward and slash off heads yourselves.
Mentor Amett Sayer watched the axe, sprouting dozens of legs, charge forward and chop off a head with a single blow, then silently pulled out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his brow.
And Mentor Meckel glanced at Malin, finally letting out a long sigh: "I never thought that Blood Roar and the sapling of the World Tree could be used in such a way."
After Blood Roar had chopped off more than a dozen heads, Malin finally snapped his fingers, making it stop.
"It’s safe now," Malin said, turning to gesture Logan over; the two mentors had already walked ahead into the station.
Logan rushed over, deliberately avoiding the corpses—the presence of the insect larva forced Malin to be cautious. Who knew whether these little creatures would continue to move after their host died, or, like a dying insect, would consume everything inside their host’s body to forcibly hatch themselves out.
With that thought, Malin gestured to Blood Roar and Fio. Fio immediately jumped into Malin’s hand, carrying Blood Roar.
"What did you find?" Mentor Meckel, who was searching the corpses’ pockets for information, turned to ask.
"I want to see if there’s any difference between the insectoids that died in the fire and those that died without injury." Having said that, Malin split the chest armor of an insectoid that had been burned to death. Although it could block a dagger, it couldn’t withstand a blow from a legendary battle-axe combined with its master’s strength.
The blow split open its chest, and Malin reached in; having already confirmed that the mucus was not corrosive, he straightforwardly peeled open the shell and pulled out the larva.
The burned larva had completely lost its vitality, unlike the moving larva extracted from the insectoids that had been shot. It was clear that this kind of creature couldn’t withstand high temperatures, and fire could easily kill them. This larva had obviously been ’steamed’ to death.
Malin turned around, and with a glance, the sapling of the World Tree shot out from his other arm and lassoed a crow that had landed on one of the bodies outside back to him.
Malin intended to conduct an experiment to see if it would become infected.
The World Tree sapling, through its ’soothing,’ made the crow open its mouth, and Malin tossed the larva into it.
Indicating that the crow should be bound tightly, the sapling of the World Tree immediately tied it up, while Malin turned and pulled over a body that hadn’t been singed. He took out a dagger—the insectoid that was burned to death obviously wouldn’t have as much sticky mucus to splatter, but that might not be the case with this specimen. To avoid uncertain dangers, Malin used the old method and peeled open the shell.
The larva removed from the pouch still showed no signs of life, which puzzled Malin—they hadn’t been hit by bullets or even touched by flames, so why had they died?
The shock grenade’s high-frequency sound waves? Unlikely. At this thought, Malin turned his gaze to the crow and noticed it was still squawking. Under Malin’s mental command, the World Tree sapling twisted the crow’s head off. Malin used his dagger to dissect the crow, confirming that the larva was in its stomach and not elsewhere before throwing the larva he’d extracted onto the ground and crushing it: "Logan, I have a task for you."
"What is it?" The peer who had been nauseous and vomiting since entering turned to look at Malin.
"First, go outside to vomit; second, call a few upperclassmen to collect the dead insectoids’ bodies with incendiary bottles and burn them."
"Okay, okay... urgh..." Before Logan could reply, he leaned over and vomited again.
"Young man, don’t push yourself too hard," Mentor Meckel said with a smile.
Malin shook his head, walked over, and pulled his old friend out of the station lobby: "Logan, make sure you take care of it quickly."
Then he didn’t wait for the boy but went back inside the station hall: "Did you find the newspaper kiosk?"
"We found it, but your incendiary grenade burned down the kiosk," Mentor Amett Sayer said, pointing toward the ruins of the kiosk, now reduced to ashes and debris.
Malin smiled wryly at this—when tossing the incendiary grenade, his first thought was to aim for something hard so that breaking the bottle would spread the flames further. In the urgency of the moment, who would look first to see what that thing was, and who could know it was the newspaper kiosk.
"But no problem, we found a few newspapers on the benches," Mentor Amett Sayer said, tossing one of them to Malin: "Shall we take a look outside?"
"No problem," Mentor Meckel said, waving his notebook: "This should be the station master’s diary, we might be able to ascertain the issue from it."
So the trio walked out of the station. Malin saw some upperclassmen moving bodies, a few he didn’t recognize, probably from the Goddess of Benevolent Church. They piled the bodies together, and Logan had a barrel of oil in his hands, seemingly ready to start pouring it.
Malin opened the newspaper, flipping through the first few pages—In Carterburg, no, throughout the entire Sydney Union, the front and second pages of the newspapers are always international affairs, the third page is where all the sensationalists make waves, and general information citizens need to know start from the fourth page.
The content on the fourth page was simple. Lord Sayer Kay of Silent Hill, a Transcendent, Legendary Eleventh Level Greatsword fighter, married a week ago. He is currently honeymooning at the lord’s mansion. The bride is said to be a very cute Lin Jing girl, a Transcendent, Seventh Level Sharpshooter (Sharpshooter is a native profession of the elfkin, with a non-human magic potion sequence. They can hit the earring under your left ear from two to three hundred meters away without missing).
