Chapter 166: Chapter 126: Deep into the Night (IV)_2
```
Shrill cries came from the street once more as Chaos’s followers once again drove twisted monsters into view of the City Guards.
"Fifteen twisted beasts! More Chaotic Believers! They have pustules on them!" an elf seated by the second-floor window waved to his commander, "Let the twisted beasts come at us! We’ll intercept those pustulous believers; if they breach the line, it’ll be trouble!"
"But we can’t beat the twisted beasts in close combat if they charge at us!" a Half-human screamed.
"We’ll handle it!" a Gnome City Guard was attaching explosive tools to his belt: "My family’s all on that side! I’ve got nothing left now! Let them come! Gnome flesh might be tender, but it’ll take good teeth to chew!"
A human City Guard took a pile of explosive tools from his side and slotted them into his belt as well.
"One hundred yards... I see Chaos has guns! There’s gunfire!" The elf noticed stray bullets whizzing past him and quickly closed the window, "Commander! Where are our reinforcements!"
"What reinforcements!" The middle-aged City Guard captain said while pushing away a young City Guard and grabbing explosive tools from his hands—this youngster had tied them together: "You’re still young, kid, your home’s gone, but you can find another wife, have a bunch of kids, unlike me, my home’s truly gone, no wife, no children, I ought to be the one to die here today."
He patted the young lad’s head and turned to his Messenger: "Drag this kid to the Central District, any only child follow as well!"
He surveyed the defensive line.
Some lads were shrinking into barriers made of furniture and stones, young-faced City Guards were desperately hiding behind their comrades, and Half-humans were yelling at him: "What are you looking at me for? I’ve already got four kids!"
"What about your little kid over there?" the City Guard captain stared him down.
The Half-human was taken aback for a moment, he turned his head and saw the child behind him: "Are you crazy? Get lost!"
"Dad just died, mom’s over there, my sister’s there too, I don’t want to go!" the child, not as tall as a rifle, held a Revolver with a sorrowful look on his face.
"Forty yards! No time for chit-chat!" the elf yelled as he continued firing.
The City Guard captain stood up, walked over to the child, snatched the gun from his hands, and flung him towards his Messenger: "I’m giving you an order now, take these two kids, and get as far away as possible, right now, immediately." Staring at the three of them, the middle-aged City Guard captain pointed the stolen Revolver towards the defensive line. The disorderly twisted Chaos beast had just leaped over, met the oncoming bullets without any defense, and was hit through the eye socket, throwing it off balance and tumbling to the ground.
Several City Guards immediately rushed over, pummeling the creature with Bayonettes and rifle butts.
An explosion sounded from beyond the line, with limbs falling at the feet of the middle-aged City Guard captain. He looked at the three children before him and roared with all his might.
His Messenger finally dragged the two children by their hands, looking back every three steps, towards the rear.
"These days, everyone’s rushing to seek death."
The City Guard captain turned around. The twisted beasts had by now breached the line, entangling with the City Guards, while some Guards charged out of the line and collided with advancing Chaotic Believers.
The close-range rifle fire reached its peak of effectiveness, with every trigger pull by either side potentially hitting their own in melee. Thus, the gunfire quickly ceased, and both sides began to fight hand-to-hand with Bayonettes, rifle butts, daggers, and defensive sticks.
Armed with a Revolver, the City Guard captain was like wielding a divine artifact. He first shot dead a twisted beast that was close at hand, then swiveled the gun left and knocked down a Chaotic Believer who was strangling a subordinate on the ground. He dodged an incoming Bayonette, grabbed the barrel, and used the sharp rim of his helmet to slice open the Chaos’s nose, then placed the barrel under its chin and pulled the trigger.
An awful stench emanated from the dead Chaos.
It was poison!
While issuing a warning, the City Guard captain raised his gun and fired at the Chaos who was aiming at him too.
His bullet pierced the Chaos’s chest, while the latter’s shot also hit his thigh.
The unsupported City Guard captain collapsed to the ground. Before he could regain his balance, a Chaotic launched itself onto him, screeching. Looking at the dagger in its hand, the City Guard captain had no choice but to block the arm pressing down on him.
As the blade drew closer to his eye socket, the City Guard captain struggled fiercely, but another shot to his leg made him lose strength, and he had to twist his head to avoid the dagger piercing his socket. However, his face was slashed open, seemingly damaging his left eye. Besides excruciating pain, he also lost part of his vision.
The Chaos on top of him was shouting unintelligible words while using the dagger to carve into the City Guard captain’s face.
Just as the City Guard captain was about to lose his strength, a small hand wrapped around the Chaos’s neck from behind.
He heard a crisp crack; the Chaos with a broken neck was then dragged off him by the owner of the hand.
