Chapter 29: Ning Zhongze’s Misunderstanding
Linghu Chong walked while thinking — he needed to forge a Black iron Heavy Sword.
But forging a Black iron Heavy Sword would require a lot of silver — likely several hundred, maybe even over a thousand taels.
That was quite a problem.
At the moment, even if he gathered all his assets together, he wouldn’t have more than a few taels of silver. The gap was far too big.
Looks like I have to find a way to make some money.
He could consider borrowing some silver from the Huashan disciples.
These disciples who were able to come to Huashan to cultivate generally had some family wealth. Since they are here to learn under a master, they must have paid some tuition or incense fees, right?
Among all the disciples of the Huashan Sect, only a few like Linghu Chong had been adopted or taken in; the majority came from well-off families in the secular world. So, borrowing some silver from them might just work.
Though… whether he could borrow over a thousand taels was uncertain.
If only Master’s Wife would help, then a few thousand taels would be nothing — she could easily provide it.
After all, Huashan Sect had quite a few properties and businesses in the secular world. Otherwise, how could such a large sect afford its expenditures?
Unfortunately, after that incident, relying on Master’s Wife Ning Zhongze for now was out of the question.
But aside from the regular disciples, weren’t there also the undercover spies?
Take Lao Denuo, for instance — a mole sent from the Songshan Sect. He is someone that deserves a good fleecing.
If things went well, I might even be able to gather all the silver I need to forge the Black iron Heavy Sword just from him.
As Linghu Chong thought about this, a smirk slowly formed at the corner of his lips — an evil smile — it seemed like he had an idea already.
It was decided. He would go find Lao Denuo once it got dark.
…
About an hour later, Linghu Chong dragged his exhausted body back to the Huashan Sect.
Coming down from the Cliff of Reflection in one go, then all the way back to the sect — the journey was far more difficult than usual.
However, this time coming down from the cliff wasn’t as grueling as before.
Linghu Chong was quite pleased. He said, “Not bad. At this rate, in just a few more days, I should be able to fully adapt to this fifty-kilogram burden.”
Upon returning to the sect, Linghu Chong didn’t disturb anyone. He went straight to his quarters.
This return trip was just to grab some belongings to bring back to Cliff of Reflection.
Yesterday he had left in a rush, taking nothing with him. It had gotten a bit cold in the cave at night.
So he came to grab some clothes and bedding — he planned to spend the next stretch of time up on the Cliff of Reflection.
After packing up his things, Linghu Chong was about to head back.
But just as he shut the door and turned to leave, he ran into Yue Lingshan who had come looking for him.
Yue Lingshan hadn’t seen Linghu Chong all day yesterday and missed him dearly.
So she came searching for him. She had looked in several places and hadn’t found him — who would’ve thought he was still at his quarters. And as soon as she arrived, she saw this bizarre scene.
“Senior Brother! What are you doing? Carrying a big rock on your back and holding luggage in your hands — where are you going?” Yue Lingshan frowned in confusion.
Linghu Chong hadn’t expected to run into Yue Lingshan either. He smiled and said, “Little Junior Sister! What brings you here? I’m not going anywhere. I’m heading to Cliff of Reflection — I’ll be training there for the next few days.”
Yue Lingshan was stunned. “What? You’re going up to Cliff of Reflection to train?”
She dashed forward and gently placed her pale hand on his forehead. “No fever…? Senior Brother, did those bad people hit you on the head too hard or something?”
“Cliff of Reflection is a place for solitary reflection. It’s desolate and dangerous. Why on earth would you train up there? What kind of training can you even do there?”
Linghu Chong put down his luggage, gently took her soft hand away from his forehead, and gave it a squeeze. “Junior Sister, I don’t really know how to explain it to you right now. But I really am training. Don’t worry about it.”
Yue Lingshan’s heart melted as her hand was clasped by Linghu Chong’s warm palm, but she still looked puzzled. “But Senior Brother, this is too weird. If you want to train, why not do it here? Why insist on going up to Cliff of Reflection?”
Linghu Chong reached out a hand and slid it from her slender waist to her back, pulling her soft body into his arms. He looked down at her with a gentle smile. “Junior Sister, I can’t tell you yet. When the time is right, I’ll let you know.”
Caught off guard by the sudden intimacy, Yue Lingshan looked up at his handsome and gentle face. Her heart fluttered like a little deer — she was completely drawn in. Her cheeks flushed a delicate pink as she unconsciously nodded. “All right… But you have to come see me often.”
“You didn’t show up all day yesterday — I couldn’t find you anywhere.”
Linghu Chong nodded. “I promise, I’ll come see you every night.”
“Really?” Yue Lingshan asked joyfully.
Linghu Chong patted his chest. “Of course. Has Senior Brother ever lied to you?”
“All right, let’s pinky swear!”
She stretched out her soft hand, hooking her pinky toward Linghu Chong.
He chuckled and hooked his finger with hers.
Seeing this, Yue Lingshan beamed with happiness. She let go of his hand and leaned into his chest like a little bird seeking shelter.
A faint orchid fragrance drifted over, making Linghu Chong’s heart stir. He gazed into Yue Lingshan’s eyes for a long moment.
Seeing his expression, Yue Lingshan closed her eyes slowly, full of anticipation.
How could Linghu Chong resist at this point? He wasn’t the original owner of this body — he wouldn’t let such an opportunity go to waste.
A long moment passed.
Their lips parted.
Yue Lingshan smiled sweetly, her heart full of honey — she felt like Linghu Chong had finally come to his senses.
Linghu Chong glanced at the stone table in the courtyard and said to Yue Lingshan, “Let’s go sit over there for a bit.”
“Okay!” Yue Lingshan nodded.
Linghu Chong scooped her up into his arms and walked toward the stone table.
Yue Lingshan wasn’t alarmed at all. Instead, she snuggled closer into his chest like a spoiled kitten.
Linghu Chong sat down on the stone bench, still holding her in his arms. “Junior Sister, how is Master’s Wife doing? Has she gotten any better?”
Yue Lingshan leaned her head on his shoulder, her expression full of worry. “Mother has been spacing out all day, sighing now and then. She looks really troubled. I’m worried something bad might happen.”
“Senior Brother, what should I do?”
She was deeply troubled. She had already tried many ways to cheer her mother up, but nothing seemed to work.
“This…”
Linghu Chong was momentarily speechless. He didn’t know what to do either. With everything that had happened, it was already fortunate that Ning Zhongze hadn’t done anything drastic. But the knot in her heart — that might never be untied.
“Junior Sister, since Master’s Wife doesn’t want to talk about it, there’s nothing we can do. You’re the one closest to her. Only you can help her now. Just try to keep her company — maybe she’ll get better over time.”
At the moment, the only hope lay in Yue Lingshan staying close to Ning Zhongze. Linghu Chong was also worried, but he knew she was the last person who wanted to see him right now.
Yue Lingshan sighed. “I understand, Senior Brother. I’ll definitely take good care of Mother.”
“Mm.”
Linghu Chong nodded and quietly held her in his arms.
After a while, Yue Lingshan said, “Senior Brother, I have to go back now. I can’t leave Mother alone for too long.”
Linghu Chong nodded. “All right, go. Stay with Master’s Wife more. Once she recovers, I’ll keep you company every day.”
Yue Lingshan beamed. “Heehee, deal!”
Before she left, Linghu Chong kissed her again.
Yue Lingshan skipped out of Linghu Chong’s courtyard happily.
Linghu Chong didn’t linger either — he set off for Cliff of Reflection once more.
…
Humming a little tune, Yue Lingshan returned to Jingxin Courtyard.
Ning Zhongze, who was watering flowers, noticed her daughter’s joyful mood and asked, “Shan’er, where did you go? You look so happy.”
Yue Lingshan trotted over to her mother and linked arms with her. “Mother, I went to find Senior Brother!”
Ning Zhongze straightened up in surprise, frowning. “What? You went to see that rascal? What was he doing?”
Yue Lingshan looked at her mother in disbelief. “Mother, why are you calling Senior Brother that?”
Ning Zhongze had never spoken of Linghu Chong like this before. She always affectionately called him Chong’er, treating him like her own son.
Realizing her slip, Ning Zhongze didn’t bother to explain. “That brat is always causing trouble — can’t I say a few words about him?”
“No, no — of course you can say what you like!”
“But Mother, isn’t it strange? Senior Brother is fine, yet he insists on going to Cliff of Reflection, carrying a giant rock that looks like it weighs over a hundred jin.”
Yue Lingshan described Linghu Chong’s odd behavior.
Ning Zhongze was stunned. “What? He went to Cliff of Reflection carrying a huge stone? What is he trying to do?”
Yue Lingshan nodded. “I don’t know what he’s thinking. He said it’s training. He even spent the night up there yesterday. Just now I ran into him at his quarters — he was packing a bunch of stuff, looked like he planned to live on the cliff for a while.”
“This…”
Ning Zhongze was dumbfounded. A thought flashed through her mind — could it be that Chong’er felt guilty over what happened, and had gone to Cliff of Reflection to reflect on his own?
She believed that must be it.
“That silly child…”
Ning Zhongze gave a bitter smile. Linghu Chong’s actions brought her an unexpected sense of comfort. She hadn’t expected him to go to such lengths.
None of this was his fault, yet he bore the blame silently, choosing to reflect on his own.
She understood his intention now — she shouldn’t let Linghu Chong shoulder all of this alone.
Yue Lingshan nodded in agreement. “Right? Isn’t Senior Brother strange like that, Mother?”
Ning Zhongze smiled faintly. Linghu Chong wasn’t a fool. Others might not understand, but she saw it clearly. “Shan’er, next time you see your Senior Brother, tell him not to go anymore — say it’s your mother’s request.”
Yue Lingshan nodded. “Okay, but judging by how serious Senior Brother looked, I don’t think he’ll listen.”
Ning Zhongze fell silent.
