"What’s wrong with it? We’re a legally married couple; what’s not to look good about holding hands? Is it unsightly for you to be seen holding another man’s wife, or for me to be seen holding another woman’s husband?" He Zhilan laughed in exasperation at He Teng’s overly serious demeanor, "It’s not like we’re in the army, and there’s no need for you to maintain your military image here. "If you want to hold hands, we can do it to our heart’s content at home," He Teng replied, then urged Zhilan to hurry up and catch the bus to return to the countryside.

Zhilan stood still, her hands hanging by her sides, and hummed softly, "You’re such a block of wood. Will you hold hands or not? If you refuse, then I’m not leaving! If you can, just keep me company here. If I catch a cold from this breeze, let’s see what father says about your lack of care when we get back!"

Zhilan was now having a showdown with He Teng. Walking hand in hand as a married couple should have been sweet! But with He Teng, it felt like she was dragging him to the execution ground. Was it really that torturous?

"If you don’t come, then I’ll head back by myself." He Teng frowned, gesturing with his hand before marching forward. After less than five meters, he realized that Zhilan truly hadn’t followed. Turning back, he saw the small, angry woman glaring at him from the crowd, and he sighed, "He Zhilan, I’ll count to three. If you don’t come over, you’ll have to deal with it yourself."

Before he could utter the next count, Zhilan had already turned her back to him, refusing to look.

Then, the word "one" remained unspoken, stuck in He Teng’s throat. In the past, this tactic would work wonders with Zhilan — a stern face from him would guarantee her compliance.

If this were at home, away from the public eye, he could easily carry her off. But here, on a busy street, carrying her just wasn’t feasible; holding hands was an embarrassment.

He Teng took long strides to return to Zhilan’s side, circled around to stand in front of her, scratching his head, and said in a low voice, "Zhilan, let’s go home. Behind closed doors, we can hold hands all we want."

"Weren’t you just going to head back by yourself? Go ahead then," Zhilan said, her head lowered as she looked at her toes, her voice tinged with sullenness. She was genuinely upset at He Teng’s abrupt turnaround earlier, but fortunately, he didn’t actually leave her there to go home alone.
