"They were dumped here by a clothing factory owner who’s a friend of mine. He has this clothing factory which generates a lot of fabric scraps like these. He doesn’t know what to do with them and doesn’t have space to stash them, so he figured he’d dump them here since we had space. The clothes that were made for you were made by their tailors, their craftsmanship is quite good, right?" Lin Chan replied, leading He Zhilan further into the warehouse, "Take a look, how do you find the products from my factory?"

He Zhilan smiled, "Why are you asking a layperson like me? I don’t have the expertise to discern the craftsmanship or value, I just appreciate the designs. So, don’t ask me these technical things. I can just tell you that the designs look impressive."

After scanning the warehouse, He Zhilan’s gaze repeatedly returned to the pile of fabric scraps. Since they were offcuts from a clothing factory, the pile had all sorts of materials.

Lin Chan noticed that He Zhilan seemed captivated by the fabric scraps and asked, puzzled, "Do you find that pile of rubbish more appealing than my goods? If it piles up for too long, the waste collectors will come to take it away. Isn’t that just a pile of waste?"

"Treat it as waste? That seems very wasteful," said He Zhilan, "I suddenly thought of a way to make money!"

"From this pile of scraps?" Lin Chan asked sceptically.

"To you, it’s small money! I’m talking about myself!" He Zhilan said with a smile, "I want to pick some of these scraps, then go to the small market to buy some equipment. I’ll make some decorations myself and set up a stall in the busiest places on weekends!"

He Zhilan had thought about using these fabric scraps to make items like hair clips and small hair accessories. Handmade jewelry wasn’t yet common at the time, and the styles that were available were pretty basic. So, if she could make her own using these fabric scraps, her designs would be unique and trendy; she might be able to make a decent amount of pocket money.

"Pick as much as you want, as long as you find a use for them! You mentioned the small market? I can drop you there later."
