At noon, He Zhilan ate a couple of spoonfuls of the porridge that Jiang Biyun brought her. She hadn’t gotten too far through it before the school physician immediately sent her to the nearest Medical University Affiliated Hospital from Capital University. Whether it was a weak immune system or something else, her fever subsided a little, before surging back worse than before. This scared Jiang Biyun and Chen Xiting senseless. Thankfully, the school physician stayed by their side. Eventually, he sent the two back to school.

He Zhilan lay alone in the hospital. The old school physician remained by her side. He had earlier heard Jiang Biyun mention that He Zhilan’s husband was taking a course at the Capital Military Academy, so he asked He Zhilan if she wanted her husband to be informed to come to the hospital to take care of her. Unexpectedly, He Zhilan adamantly refused.

"Soldiers indeed prioritize their army duties. But now, your wife is ill. Since he’s at the military academy, he should come over to accompany you." The old school physician had thought that He Zhilan was worried that her husband coming would disrupt his studies, so he tried to persuade her again.

"He was injured on a mission not long ago and was only discharged from the hospital a few days ago. He still needs a crutch to walk. With others looking after him at school, he’s fine. But if he were to come to the hospital alone and get jostled or bumped into...what then? I just have a fever, it’s not a severe illness. After sleeping, I might be better by the time I wake up tomorrow." He Zhilan thanked the old school physician and asked him to return to the school first. The nurses in the hospital were keeping an eye on her IV drip, so even if she fell asleep, it wouldn’t be a problem.

Upon hearing He Zhilan’s words, the old school physician no longer tried to persuade her. Being just a school physician, he couldn’t possibly leave the school clinic unattended to stay at the hospital with He Zhilan. So, after giving the nurses a few instructions, the old school physician left.

In the ward, only He Zhilan was left with some other patients and their visitors, whom she didn’t know. The high fever kept her in a state of confusion the whole day and soon, she fell into a slumber once more.

When she woke up again and looked out of the window, it was already dark, but she felt somewhat better.

The nurse happened to walk in, "Miss He, you’ve woken up? Your fever has subsided. You should be feeling much relaxed now. Oh right, you have a friend here to see you!"

"Thank you for looking after me this afternoon!" He Zhilan said with a faint smile to the nurse. If not for the nurse, she wouldn’t have known that her IV bag was empty after falling into such a deep sleep.

The nurse shook her head, then stepped aside to let the person behind her in, before moving to change the bandages for the patient in the bed across from He Zhilan.

The person whom the nurse referred to as He Zhilan’s friend was Liu Jiang. Unlike the bouquet of white lilies he carried in the afternoon, this time, he held red roses. Even the red handprint on his face was conspicuously eye-catching.

Before He Zhilan could ask, Liu Jiang explained himself. While talking, he even awkwardly touched his slightly swollen face, saying, "I called off the wedding!"

"Did your fiancée do this?" He Zhilan blurted out as soon as she heard, "Good on her!"

Liu Jiang was taken aback, he shook his head, "Her father did it." He paused, then with a disheartened look on his face, Liu Jiang said, "Miss He, why aren’t you pleased? I’ve called off my engagement, I can be with you now! I can pursue you openly and deservedly!"

As soon as these words slipped out, the way the patients and their families, including the nurse from earlier, looked at He Zhilan changed. At any time, the third person in a relationship is always despised, and Liu Jiang’s words had put He Zhilan in that very position.
