"She’ll be fine by herself, I don’t need the half day off." He Teng said, "After training, I’ll bring her over in the evening, you can start nagging sister-in-law then."

"If I give you leave, you take leave. No more nonsense! This is an order! Today, you’ll accompany your wife at the guesthouse. If you dare to disappear and neglect your wife, I’ll place you in confinement!" Political Commissar Chen reprimanded. He wondered, what was happening to He Teng? When other people’s wives came, they would be so grateful for just half a day off, they’d practically be clinging to his leg. Why was He Teng so begrudging? If it were anybody else, he wouldn’t have granted the leave!

"Thank you, Political Commissar!" He Zhilan smiled, it was rare to see He Teng being bested, "Political Commissar, may I take He Teng away now?"

"Take him away, and thank you for not disdaining him." Commissar Chen waved them off with a joke, signaling for them to set off.

He Zhilan’s eyes curved into a smile, and she then took her place behind He Teng and gave him a slight push. Only when He Teng turned his gaze to her did she pout, indicating for him to lead the way.

Watching the couple’s subtle movements, Commissar Chen walked away contentedly. This is what a newly married couple should be like. He Teng knew nothing about pleasing his wife, yet still managed to have such a good woman marry him. The rest of the troops surely won’t have to worry about their marriage prospects!

Now that orders had been given, He Teng’s protests were of no use. He had to take He Zhilan to the guesthouse.

He Teng didn’t have a single room in the military district, instead, he shared a quadroom with his comrades. So, when He Zhilan came, he could only bring her to the guesthouse specially designated for the families of soldiers on a visit.

"He Zhilan, you’re growing bold." He Teng suddenly blurted out after a long silence.

He Zhilan stuck out her tongue at him. Since she was behind He Teng, she couldn’t see if he was grimacing or not. From his tone though, she didn’t sense any anger. Instead, strangely enough, he seemed to be joking a bit.

The so-called guesthouse was just a two-story building which, looked slightly old. At least it was clean on the inside.

He Teng led He Zhilan into a room on the second floor. The door of the room was open. Presumably, someone knew that guests were coming and had cleaned the room and aired it out in advance. After entering, He Teng put Zhilan’s stuff on a wooden chair, then turned back to look at He Zhilan.

"Brother, where do you stay?" He Zhilan looked around the room, the environment was decent, primarily because there were attached bathroom facilities, so she didn’t have to worry about using the toilet.

"I don’t stay here." He Teng paused for a moment, then added, "I’ll stay here with you these few days."

Seeing He Zhilan nodding and laughing without saying a word, He Teng continued, "There are no other family members in this building now, so you’ll be the only one staying here for the next few days. But don’t worry, the army is always safe."

"Since you’re staying with me at night, what should I be scared of?" He Zhilan retorted, only to be startled by a head popping out suddenly from the door.

He Teng noticed the change in He Zhilan’s expression. When he turned back, the silhouette at the door immediately disappeared.
