It was only after He Zhilan’s laugh that Xing Ye realized he had said too much. He stopped laughing and watched He Zhilan get out of the car without saying another word.

He Zhilan walked through the school gate alone, contemplating Xing Ye’s words.

Reflecting back, she realized that ever since He Teng joined the army, he hadn’t been home for the New Year celebrations. Before the phones were installed, he only sent letters and some money home. Once phones were installed in the army, though, he would call home, but he never had the opportunity to celebrate the New Year with his family.

Thinking of the reunion celebrations taking part in every household while He Teng spent those times alone in the army, voluntarily taking up army duties so his comrade brothers could go home, He Zhilan couldn’t stop herself from feeling heartbroken.

In a split second, she decided that no matter what, she was going to stay and celebrate the New Year with He Teng this winter break. And she would make a home-cooked meal for him to enjoy, giving them a chance to spend the New Year together just like they used to at home.

After the military training and the start of the real school term, He Zhilan began a routine life. Classroom, dormitory, library - that was her life. After joining her part-time library job, she met a few senior students, who like her, were also library part-timers. She became the only freshman in the whole of Capital University to get a library job upon entering.

The library job was not a tough one: cleaning up, putting books back to their places, recording book loans and returns. In her spare time, she would chat with her seniors or read a book herself. That was the perk of working in the library, never running out of books to read.

Sometimes, Jiang Biyun and Chen Xiting would come to the library to keep her company and read together. Tan Heqian would tease her about falling helplessly into a sea of books this time.

However, because He Zhilan’s job at the library left her with no spare time to eat or stay at the dormitory, Gu En became upset with her, thinking He Zhilan was just giving herself a hard time.

Gu En didn’t have the best temperament, so her straightforwardness made her few friends at the university. Her proud nature kept her from mingling with people who tried to please her. Therefore, she preferred spending time with He Zhilan. Since He Zhilan started working at the library, Gu En had no one to hang out with. Even after urging He Zhilan to quit her job multiple times, and offering money for it, Gu En’s expression turned grimmer every time she saw He Zhilan.

He Zhilan felt helpless about offending Gu En, she didn’t want to estrange their relationship. However, she also couldn’t become a parasite feeding on Gu En, asking her for money. She had her own dignity, and she enjoyed her current job. Working in the library allowed her to interact with professors, who would sometimes share professional knowledge with her.

The National Day holiday was the first long break for the freshman at Capital University. It lasted an entire week, seven days. Jiang Biyun and Chen Xiting asked for a leave to go home the afternoon before the holiday. In the evening, Gu En also packed her things and left. Among the remaining, Huang Cai and Wang Bingbing didn’t plan to go back. In the evening, when they saw He Zhilan still in the dormitory, they enquired.

"I’m leaving on the first train tomorrow morning." He Zhilan answered with a smile, while pointing to her packed-up stuff.

Lin Chan had booked the train ticket for He Zhilan. She had even offered to accompany He Zhilan to the train station, and had intended to go with her to He Teng’s army unit to meet her "brother-in-law", if He Zhilan hadn’t stopped her.
