Stand By Me Darling -
Chapter 450: The Most Boring Chase
Chapter 450: The Most Boring Chase
"You’re Ethan Hunt," Talia’s eyes twinkled in the moonlight. The moment she mentioned the main character of the movie: Mission Impossible, she noticed his eyes brightening up.
"You have a motorbike with a pretty lady in the back, there is a helicopter, and a long road ahead of us although it has no traffic... Fred, you know you won’t have another chance like this to realistically enact a helicopter chase."
She knew this will convince him to race through the road. She was someone who never put herself in risky environments. Her everyday life had enough risks with all the death threats she grew up with and she never gets involved with any extreme sports to get an adrenalin rush.
But that day, she felt like it. The secret Arthur revealed had a great part in it. She wanted to get past the hurt; to move on. She wanted the racing wind blowing on her face and the adrenalin rush to help her focus on future – their marriage.
"Hold on," Arthur said.
He decided to do this. Not because it is one of his childhood fantasies (which boy in the world hasn’t dreamt of being the main character of an action movie?), but because he could see it in her eyes.
She wants this; she needs this. And as a man, he should provide her what she needs.
The distinctive sound of the powerful engine roared in the empty roads as a helicopter followed them. Both Talia and Arthur were excited as they flew on the road.
Talia removed her helmet and her hair danced freely in the air. Closing her eyes, she extended her arms out. As the high-velocity wind hit her, she felt her sadness getting washed away and she started feeling light.
"Your Royal Highness, Lord Rodenberg... please slow down... There is a curve ahead... Although there isn’t any traffic, you should stop at red lights, Lord Rodenberg... There is a truck approaching 100 meters to your twelve. Please be alert..."
The most polite police chase in history brought her mood down. She thought it was her grandpa up in the air, advising them.
"I can see that big a$$ truck approaching right in front of us!" Talia waved her hand in frustration.
She could see Arthur getting bored after some while too.
"Maybe if they used this technique on teenagers who are joyriding stealing their parent’s car rather than arresting them, they will never dare to do it again," Talia said in Arthur’s ears.
"Better yet, if they used their mum’s voice, they’d abhor joyriding altogether," Arthur added. "Should I stop? This is getting uninteresting."
As they almost gave up, they saw approaching squad cars, and their mood got better.
Finally, there will be some chasing action!
"All units, please maintain at least fifty meters from Her Royal Highness...Do not get close, I repeat, do not get close to the motorbike. Form a perimeter..."
"Ugh! Just stop, Fred! What a failure," Talia sighed and Arthur slowed down. They were surrounded by the cars and a bunch of police officers encircled them.
They weren’t asked to raise their hands or to show their Id. They weren’t even cuffed but were politely asked to get in the back of a car and were brought to the nearest police precinct.
"We only have this, Your Royal Highness. Forgive us for our lacking hospitality," the Superintendent of Police offered them a box of doughnuts and two tumblers filled with hot espresso.
Talia was mad at them for treating her this way. She was about to say something, but she saw the chocolate glaze over the doughnuts and she suddenly got hungry.
After finishing the doughnuts and coffee, she was refreshed.
"Thank you," she gave her angelic smile making all the cops in there go all mushy. Some even blushed and Talia heard Arthur’s knuckles cracking.
"Why did you bring us here?" she asked.
"That... Your Royal Highness... His Lordship has violated traffic rules and-"
"Oh, so you serve refreshments for everyone who breaks the law?" she asked and Arthur turned to look at her.
This one is going to get me charged with a crime, isn’t she? After everything I did in my life, I am going to get charged for traffic violations? Ah, I don’t want a record on my name. My pa will kill me.
He sighed.
"Iris..." he scratched her back, "Let’s go."
Stop, you noble idiot! Let’s leave!
But no, she was not listening.
"...Umm, no, Your Royal Highness, umm..." the Superintendent was lost for words.
"Then treat us like others." She said and the entire room went into a frenzy. They still couldn’t figure out if Talia is being serious or not.
"What charges are you filing against us?"Talia asked and they listed the charges that are to be filed against Arthur.
"There will be none charged against me?" she asked and the Superintendent wanted to cry.
"You weren’t driving, Your Royal Highness," his voice trembled. He thought this Princess is trying to get him killed for disturbing their joyride. Arthur too wanted to cry hearing the list of offences he committed.
"Oh? Continue..." Talia said and there were some more charges to be filed.
"Grand larceny?" Talia was surprised.
Isn’t that a serious crime?
"Prince Lambert filed a complaint that his motorbike got stolen and-"
"Ugh! That nincompoop!" Talia fisted her hands. By now she felt bad for insisting on getting treated like others.
She turned to look at Arthur and seeing his angry glare, she bowed her head. She could understand that he is blaming her for actively getting a criminal record for him.
This has gone way over my head! Why did I run my mouth?
"Don’t I get my phone call?" Talia asked and they all nodded enthusiastically.
Talia called Louis. She felt bad for waking him up at 3 a.m., but she needed a high authority to help her finance from getting a criminal record.
"You’re awake!" she was surprised Louis answered his call immediately.
"Can you come to the Hansington police precinct?" she asked.
"I am on my way," Louis’ voice was cold sending shivers to Talia’s spine.
Everyone sat in silence and the Superintendent wondered who the Princess might have called.
The entire Precinct went numb as they saw the one they serve walking in the room in his sweatpants and shirt.
"Your Majesty!" Everyone bowed and curtsied.
Talia looked at Louis still with his bed hair. She was about to smile but seeing his glare, she bowed her head.
Louis talked with the Superintendent about everything and Talia saw him fisting his hand.
"About the larceny, we’ll settle it in the family. And I will pay the fine for other charges," Louis said and the Superintendant had to agree.
Talia wanted to laugh seeing Louis counting the cash, but held back seeing his glare.
He is counting papers with his picture printed on them! And he came here in his nightwear! Ah, these people must be blessed to see The King in his nightwear.
Talia expected a lecture, but was surprised by Louis’ silence all through the way back.
"Get straight to bed!"
