Stand By Me Darling -
Chapter 328: Being There As A Support
Chapter 328: Being There As A Support
"Joe, I know you are distressed. But I’m here miles apart and there you are, calling me using my friend’s phone and not saying a word. I can’t even rush there as I please. So please gather your thoughts and tell me what is wrong with Rebecca. Don’t make me have a heart attack here. You called me, damn it!" Talia gritted her teeth and spoke in a deep voice. She felt like passing out.
"I’m sorry, Talia... I..." Joe took a deep breath. "She felt uncomfortable and then there were some cramps. She couldn’t handle it and fell on the floor, Talia. I almost died seeing her like that. I rushed her to the hospital and they did an ultrasound. They’re saying she is dilated already and needs a cervical suture... The baby’s just twenty weeks old... She wants to save the baby. I have no idea what I should do. She told me not to tell anyone and she can handle it herself but I’m scared..."
Joe went on with his explanation and Talia’s hand started to tremble. Not wanting to disturb Joe who was venting, she muted her end of the line and shouted for Mrs. Grey.
"Cervical Suture... What is it?" Talia asked the strict old lady who looked worried seeing the state of their young lady.
"It- It is... When the baby has grown enough and there is a chance for miscarriage, they suture the mouth of the uterus – the cervix, to keep the baby in until it can survive without the mother that is until the baby is at least twenty six weeks old. It is not that serious if it was pre-planned, but it was done in an emergency, there can be serious complications. Little Lady, why are you asking me this now?" Mrs. Grey was worried.
Talia felt her brain getting muddled. Joe was still speaking in the other end worried for his wife.
Miscarriage? Complications?
"Joe, Joe... Where is she?" Talia interjected Joe.
"She wanted to be alone. She did not want me to inform anyone and ... they are prepping her for surgery. I’m scared, Talia. I don’t know what to do. They made me sign a form and... I don’t care if- I just want my Becky safe. That’s enough for me."
Joe went silent at the other end and Talia could finish what he was thinking when he said ’I don’t care if’. He cares little about the child now and cares only for his wife, which is understandable from his side. He has a chance of other children with Rebecca, but there is only one Rebecca.
But as Rebecca’s friend, she knew Rebecca won’t be feeing the same. She probably is blaming herself for not being careful enough or worse. It is not good for her to be alone during this time. She might not want to face Joe, but she cannot be allowed to wallow in her thoughts.
"Joe, listen... Call Sally and Rebecca’s mum. Send a private jet to fetch them and bring them here before the surgery. Arrange for that first-"
"She was mad, Talia... she said she’d leave me if I inform anyone."
"NO, she won’t. Do what I say!" Talia got angry. "Arrange for their visit and then call me. I’ll talk to her. The situation here is not good and I won’t be allowed to travel. Even then it would take me seven to eight hours for me to be there. Her sister will get there sooner and more importantly, don’t let your family know. They’d be a nuisance by her side; especially your mum! And call me if you need any kind of help."
Talia didn’t forget to express her disdain towards Joe’s family. She knew the first thing Joe’s mother would do is to blame Rebecca for being too haughty and not take care of her grandchild. Maybe that’s why Rebecca doesn’t want to inform anyone.
And she knew Joe. He definitely would arrange for the best medical facility and doctors for Rebecca and there is nothing to be worried there. He never was stingy or careless when it came to his wife.
"Okay," Joe ended the call and his voice seemed to have cleared up as he gained some confidence.
Talia couldn’t put herself in Joe’s shoes. What a terrifying ordeal it would be to see your loved one suffer and all you could do is to wait outside and hope for the best!
Talia got reminded to meet Arthur’s father who went through surgery the previous day. His surgery was a success and since they did it in secret and he was still kept in observation, Talia was asked to not visit him and she understood it. Even Arthur met his father at his home the previous day and was asked not to visit him in the hospital so not to arouse any suspicions. Only Rod was staying with his father.
Tomorrow they will shift him to a private room and Talia has plans to meet him there.
Talia was informed that Arthur was back and she ran to the drawing room to meet him. She wanted to hug him and cry, informing him that Rebecca is unwell. But seeing his tired look after returning from hours of work in his office, she didn’t have the heart to do that.
"Welcome back, Young Master!" she gave a slight bow and helped him remove his jacket. "Go freshen up and have dinner."
Arthur bent to her level and looked into her eyes. He could sense there is something wrong with her. "Is there something on my face? Go on, get changed!" Talia pushed him.
"You still didn’t have dinner?" he asked her in an accusatory tone and Talia rolled her eyes.
"I did. But I like watching you eat. Now go!"
Arthur left with a chuckle. Throughout dinner Talia silently watched Arthur, but her concentration was on her phone.
Why hasn’t Joe rung yet?
"Well, my dear Iris... now that I’m well-fed, will you be gracious enough to share what’s bothering you?"
Arthur hugged her from behind her back and asked as she locked their bedroom door. This woman is so mature; she is waiting for him to be refreshed before dumping her troubles on him.
What a good wife I have!
"Fred...Fred..." Talia couldn’t hold back her tears anymore and turned and wrapped her arms around his neck. She explained what happened with Rebecca to him and he hugged her close.
"She’ll be fine... She never hurt anyone and she will have good fortune," Arthur spoke from his heart. He might not like Rebecca, but he knew she is one of the few good ones near his wife who are her greatest support.
At that time her phone rang and Talia left his embrace and answered it.
"Tallie! What did Joe tell you? Don’t worry, it is nothing bad. I swear!" Rebecca spoke in a cheery tone and Talia’s eyes watered.
Even now she wants me to not worry?
"Why should I worry? I’m not the one lying in the hospital bed am I?" Talia tried to seem not so worried.
Rebecca glared at Joe who cowered and hid behind the curtain.
"On the contrary, my one very best friend decided to go into surgery without even letting me know as a courtesy." Talia spoke in a complaining voice.
"Am I going to the movie theatre to bring you along, Idiot?" Rebecca chuckled. "I’m fine, really fine. They say I’ll have to be in bed rest even after the surgery and I can do it, Tallie... You know how strong I am."
Talia let out a scoff. "No matter how strong you are, you would need someone by your side during times like this, idiot. Not only have you, Joe needed someone too."
"Don’t bother me by visiting me, Your Highness! This peasant is not worthy." Rebecca tried to sound natural, but her voice broke. She did need someone by her side. But she didn’t want Joe who seemed more worried than her to take on the burden of comforting her too. So she pretended to be strong and tried to push that clingy guy out, but that guy is sticking to her like a leech.
She is right! Both of us need support!
"I cannot come there immediately, but I asked Joe to arrange for Sally or your mother to be there. I bet they’d be there soon. Poor guy was lost and couldn’t even speak a sentence and I had to scream at him. But you Rebecca, I know you’d be the one in both physical and emotional pain. Be strong and hold on." Talia spoke in a soothing voice. Spending some time with her like this is the only thing she could do for now.
"I think God is punishing me for wanting to abort my child, Tallie... I’m a sinner and I deserve it." Rebecca’s voice broke and she started to sob.
I knew it! She’d be blaming herself.
Talia wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes and looked at Arthur who pulled her to his embrace. He started patting her back and she felt comfortable.
"Don’t go there, Rebecca. I don’t think if there is a God, he’d be that petty and judgemental."
"You’re right!" Rebecca smiled. Speaking to Talia like this did lift her mood a bit.
"They made me lie in a slanted bed, Tallie... I’m literally upside down to keep the baby inside and let gravity do its work..."
