Chapter 47: -America Football(Gridiron )-

(QN: Got an editor to help me work on my chaps...)

Clenching his teeth to properly fit the mouth guard, Max silently wore the helmet. With a deep breath, he strapped the gear in place and walked out to the field. The roar of the crowd echoed in his ears.

"Ready?" She asked, hastily patting his shoulders.

It was almost felt like she was afraid he would change his mind and turn around.

Honestly, the thought did cross his mind, but he simply shook it off, thinking of something else.

’I can’t possibly turn around and run, right?’

He thought assuming that would cause a much bigger scene.

Willing for the familiar, transparent screen to appear in front of his eyes. The chaotic shouts and curses from the spectating students blurred as the numbers appeared.

... [Agility- 15.1]

[Stamina- 35]

’ I will be relying on you both,’

"You see that?" A voice from the crowd, filled with mockery, cut through his thoughts. "Another fucker’s about to have his ribs broken."

Suddenly, someone in the crowd pointed toward him as he stood beside the woman in baggy tracksuit on the sidelines.

At the call of the shout, some of the crowd turned their attention to the technical area, noticing a geared-up player standing on the sidelines, prepared to step into the battlefield.

"Quick, look!" someone yelled, their voice rising above the chaos.

Those who caught sight of Max’s figure began alerting others around them. The murmurs spread like wildfire.

Unlike the players before him, who would be bouncing on their toes, jumping up and down, and doing stretches to psych themselves up, Max stood completely still, composed.

"Hehehe, does he think he’s some kind of hero?" one voice sneered from the crowd.

"We’re fucking doomed to eat shit, man. I better get out of here quick."

"Who the hell does he think he is? Some kind of confident moron?"

The insults and curses didn’t stop there. As Max remained unbothered, more and more people started turning their attention to the lone figure standing at the sidelines.

Miss Charlotte had gone to help the injured youth which she was wanted to substitute Max with.

’Well, let’s get on with this. I’m also rearing to test out my increased stats.

SHORTLY AFTER ...

"You’re in."

Her delicate voice laced with command reached his ears as she made a gesture for him to step in.

"Yeah!!! Fuck them up!" It wasn’t known who shouted it first. But despite hearing this, Max kept on with his confident joggs into the field, totally ignoring their shouts. Their heart turned hopeful, and some of them actually started to cheer.

By now the opposite team had also taken notice of the confident figure jogging into the game undeterred by the gloomy setting.

In the S Ranked Spectators side, some the nonchalant arrogant scions turned piqued and interested.

Max figure screamed aura alone, due to how detached he looked from the atmosphere.

"Who is he?"

Volkan, nudging on a team mate behind him asked, as he observed Max through his visor.

"I don’t know, but he’s got quite the girth and experienced aura. His presence alone has uplifted the teams morale."

"He has the athletic build too." A dark-skinned youth from the Third Senior Year, known as his field name "Storm,", added to their conversation, throwing Max a nod of acknowledgment.

Meanwhile, upon receiving affirmative nods from a select few around him, Max took a readied stance.

’How many years has it been?’ Finding himself on the green expanse once more, he thought of went last he geared himself up for Gridiron. ’Its definitely been more than twenty years.’ He thought.

"Over here." Storm, assuming temporary captain after Taurus injury, signaled with his arm for them to gather.

Soon, they formed an enclosed space between them.

"Hey, we’ve got this ok?"

The next thing, Max felt was a heavy pat on his shoulders from a player beside him.

"Hmmm" he nodded casually behind his visors while the youth’s eyes widened in obvious surprise that Max didn’t dent while receiving his pat.

"Guys... Do you think we should quit already?" Storm asked, his voice grim as he surveyed their expression.

Unfortunately, there was nothing but a heavy silence in response.

There was tension.

The team’s heads were bowed, their bodies deflated, unwilling to meet the gaze of their captain.

It was clear that they had given up.

And who could blame them? With twenty points behind their opponents, and the game ticking down to the final quarter, their chances of winning were slim.

Probably less than 11 minutes left...

"Hmmm... Ok then," Storm muttered, his voice heavy with disappointment. His eyes closed for a moment as he inhaled a long, frustrated breath. He nodded slowly, knowing continuing a game with a team that had already succumbed to defeat was futile.

"No." The words slipped out , his expression neutral. Max stood there, completely geared up and composed.

Through the visor of his helmet, his gaze met Storm’s.

’Eh?’

Instantly, the entire team’s attention snapped to him, their eyes widening in confusion. It was the new guy. The one who just jogged into the field that spoke up. It was clear from the surprised looks on their faces that they hadn’t expected him to speak.

But Max didn’t falter.

He merely stood, unblinking. Then, his lips parted once again, "Just pass the ball to me."

For a moment, nobody moved. There was a stunned silence.

To say they were surprised was an understatement. They thought he was just arrogant, and sick in the head.

’Can’t you read the setting?’ They must have thought.

"Well..." Storm rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "What do we have left to lose? A final, unexpected twist is better than surrendering. Conceding would make them think they’ve already beaten us." Clap. Clap. "You heard him. Let’s go!"

Suddenly the whole team seemed revitalized and started jogging towards the marked spot, forming a scrimmage line.

On the opposing side, the team composed of intimidating S Ranked Elite Students, took a formation while wearing casual smirk on their faces.

Taking notes...

’Despite the fact that they are on the winning percentage by a huge margin, appearing eased and relaxed, they are actually serious.’

’Psychological warfare... I see.’ Max quickly accessed.

"PEEP!" The whistle was blown...

As the crowd watched both teams crash into each other, a dangerous but customary fallout was leashed. Wild and bone breaking, some where sent tumbling back from a hit.

As the chaos ensued, the crowd witnessed something unexpected.

Max who had positioned himself at the edge of the attack formation, managed to take out the other youth positioned against him with a clean hit.

Like the thrust of a shovel, the other was sent tumbling right away mid air.

Slipping past their defense, he bolted with an explosive charge, before their second line of defense could react.

Doom!

It was a resounding collision. Not of their body but the other youth sent kissing the floor, almost crippling his neck.

Having wildly charged without fear, with a single thought to deal devastating blow to the other, the same tactics they had been using to take them out since the game began.

"Where are you going bastard?" The bulky youth affirmed both arms as he leaped forward, with a wide smirk curling on his lips.

Whoosh!

The crowd witnessed something astonishing...
