Chapter 98: The Supremacy Arc, Part 1

Camera. Recording.

The video was broadcast across the entire city, but people were watching it all over the world.

Excitement flooded the streets. People murmured, authorities were confused—was this a joke or an act of terror? Some were glued to their phones, others turned on their TVs.

Live on air: a mysterious man in a black kimono and a mask. He adjusted the camera slightly, coughed, and stepped back.

"What’s going on?" murmured the citizens. "Who’s that weirdo in the mask?"

"Greetings to the people of Seoul, and perhaps the entire world."

The stranger’s voice was clearly altered. Unnaturally deep, as if distorted by filters or... something otherworldly.

"My name is Mordred. The recent events in the world concern everyone on Earth. Myself included."

A brief pause.

At the Demon Hunters Association, warning lights flared. The unauthorized broadcast was reported instantly. Staff in the control room had already projected the transmission onto the main screen.

Sashi rushed in, slightly out of breath, with Jisun right behind her.

"I will tell you a story of a world long forgotten. A story of how demons invaded your Earth. And of how one demon came here... to save you. Yes. That demon... is me."

In the apartment where the transmission originated, it was quiet. The interior was modest, but clean. Only curtains let in a pale, cold light. Judging by the lighting, the recording was done early in the morning, but during the live broadcast, the sun was already high over the city.

Technicians scrambled between consoles and terminals.

Sashi fell silent. The staff tried to pinpoint the exact location of the transmission.

"Not enough from just the background..."

"Did you find the source?" Sashi asked, but the workers only shook their heads.

Sweat dripped from their temples. Some had already lost their train of thought.

"Is this really a joke?"

But all those thoughts were silenced when Mordred continued.

"Long ago, beings emerged. They evolved, just like you. Centuries passed, and the world collapsed under endless wars between races. Thousands of dimensions clashed in bloody conflict."

Everything stopped. Even cafés switched channels. In schools, lessons were paused, and students crowded around their screens.

"That’s how higher beings were born. Among them—demons. Omnipotent, endless. But one form of supremacy always fades before another. Demons were exiled. They were forced to inhabit other worlds... to regain their power."

Sashi folded her arms, eyes glued to the screen. Jisun stood behind her, hands clasped behind his back. His eyes showed neither fear nor surprise. Only calm observation. On Mordred’s masked face—nothing. No emotion, no movement. Only voice.

"The outcome of this tale was unjust. And in no way do I sympathize with my kin, nor do I swear allegiance to human understanding. Because in the end, whether strong or weak, all things bow to one truth. Death."

Meanwhile, the Association’s staff managed to track the signal’s origin.

"Miss Sashi, we’ve got it!" shouted a technician.

"Deploy Daywatch to the address immediately!"

"Y-Yes! But... there’s one issue. The address is... a church?"

"W-What?"

A church. A sanctuary of souls gathering in a place where all are equal. Dozens of A- and B-ranked hunters rushed to the location, surrounded the building tactically, and entered. But the place was empty, save for a note left on a wooden podium.

Written in blood:

"Who is God to you?"

Mordred continued:

"All my life I’ve hated the very idea of being born a demon. That’s why I betrayed my kind. I deceived the Dukes. Orchestrated their downfall from within. Sabotage. Internal conflict was the first toll of the war’s defeat. I wandered through worlds in search of peace from my thoughts... Were my judgments right? Was I justified in turning my wretched kin to ashes? Or am I... just a killer?"

A deep breath.

He stared directly into the lens.

"And so I came to Earth. I’ve been hunted for sixty years. Do I deserve punishment? Undoubtedly. Did I doom this world in the process? Perhaps. You see demons as abominations of hell, and I can’t deny that. I am not pure either. But among us are those who were born here. Who chose this world. Who want to live, just like you. They are among you."

People didn’t know whether to agree or disagree. One thing was certain—Mordred had taken root in everyone’s mind.

"He’s trying to convince people to defend demons," Jisun said calmly from his chair. "He’s provoking rebellion. Even if disguised."

Just like the Mafia.

Sashi flinched. Jisun’s point had weight.

"I do not excuse those who feast on humans," Mordred proclaimed. "But there are demons who suppress their nature and choose a humane path. They are among you. They live and suffer to avoid becoming monsters. How are they worse than you?"

Some were categorically against him. Others nodded in agreement.

"Just as in your kind, there is no evil race. There are evil people. You strive to be good, as preached in religions. Demons are no different."

"Yeah, he’s right!" some shouted.

"My neighbor’s a demon," others whispered. "And I trust him. He’s kinder than most humans."

Someone anonymously posted online:

"My classmate is a demon. He told me in secret. Because of him, I learned so much about their nature. Honestly, he’s not the only one at my school—there are tons."

Amid all the voices, Mordred continued:

"While everyone’s idea of God differs, I can’t tell you what He really is. Who created us? I don’t know. Why were demons made—that question has no answer. But I realized one truth: every being has the right to live. From the weak is born the strong. From the strong—the omnipotent. Good, evil—these are just titles. Demon Hunter Association... I know you’re watching."

The city fell silent. Every voice was drowned out, just to hear the final words of the one on the air.

"So tell me—who is God to you?"

The broadcast cut off. Commercials resumed. The city returned to its neon rhythm, as if nothing had happened.

Sashi slowly sank into her chair. Sweat dripped from her chin.

Barely blinking, she noticed her eyes trembling from exhaustion.

"The broadcast... ended."

Jisun straightened up and stretched. His body relaxed, but his eyes glowed with excitement.

"’Who is God to you,’ huh? With those words, he’s telling us something. Is this a prank by fanatics, or an Umbra trick? What do you think, Sashi?"

She didn’t answer right away. Took a deep breath. Then said:

"This isn’t just a hacker. He’s not alone. There’s a team behind him. He wants to be heard. If that’s the case, then we’re facing a new revolutionary speaking in riddles."

"And we need to solve this riddle, huh?" Jisun smirked, as if accepting a challenge. "A mysterious preacher... Mordred. Even his name ties to his past. Or maybe... this is his way of telling us he’s ready to help us fight demons?"

Sashi swallowed hard. A pause.

With hunter’s eyes locked on the screen, Jisun continued:

"But every medal has a reverse side. To make people defend ’good’ demons. He wants to sway all who sympathize with them. That’s the price of his cooperation?"

Jisun chuckled.

"He started a game. Threw down the gauntlet and left us on a high note. Now I’m curious. Who... is behind that mask?"
