Chapter 63: Space shifter
Chapter 63: Space shifter
Leo hated the tension in the air. Jade originally wasn’t the one to stutter before saying anything. He always had his way with whatever he said. But why now? What was he trying to say so badly that was getting stuck in his throat?
From the corner of his eyes, he could see Rosa and the animal form of Amanda peeping from the a corner. They were doing a bad job hiding and an even worse job at stifling their giggles. "Are they playing a prank on me?"
He’s has enough silence for a day...
"What do you want to say to me, Master Jade? Do you want to fight me again? Is this place big enough?" Leo asked rather innocently.
"No, that’s not it. I just...I..."
Leo caught on then.
"You want to say you’re sorry?"
"Y...yes. I..."
Rosa’s giggles was growing louder and more irritating. Raccoon Amanda wasn’t helping matters too with her twittering noise.
"Then say it." Leo suggested.
"I didn’t mean to fight you in that manner at the Training centre....I only wanted a light spar, I don’t know what came over me..."
More giggles. Leo might as well just burst with anger.
Jade continued. " Ever since I saw you at Planet Luxus with that man, I have always thought you’d be a worthy opponent, so I was looking for a perfect chance to engage you in combat... Trust me, I didn’t mean to hurt or scare you in any way."
"Well, well, well... If this is not the almighty Jaden Morningbolt," Leo thought.
Many things were surprising though. The kind of bond between Rosa and Jaden here in the library was completely different from what he has been seeing outside the library. Everyone knew Rosa and Jade never got along, since apparently, Rosa never listened to her brother. Even more, everyone knew Riley was completely tired of Rosa too because she’s causing him to clean up so many mess after she’s done causing trouble. "The Morningbolt children are divided," so did everyone think...and so did Leo think.
But why was there no tension between them here? Why was the siblings throwing some hidden jokes at each other? And why the freaking hell is Rosa giggling so loudly?
Seems Jade already had enough of the giggling girls also. He brought his right hand form his pocket and directed it lazily at the corner where the girls were hiding. A weak ball of fire shot out of his hand, straight at the girls. Leo didn’t turn to look if Jade hit his targets. He wished he did though. The girls seemed to have escaped being hit, as their noise travelled down the next hall with them.
"So annoying," Leo lamented with a roll of his eyes.
"Excuse me, that’s my sister," Jade said.
"I forgot," said Leo with a smirk. How did he suddenly grow comfortable with Jade here?
"So... Am I forgiven?" Jade asked.
"To be honest, I was never angry about it. I was rather happy that I got to last long enough for the authorities to intervene. Am I not superb?"
"Uhh, cocky ass. I should have gone harder," Jade muttered softly, but loud enough just for Leo to hear.
"I heard that, you know," Leo.
"Didn’t realize," Jade.
Jade offered a hand and Leo took it sheepishly. Something still didn’t sit right with Leo about this sudden make up with Jade. Is he being tested to be punished again?
Jade’s grip was firm as he shook Leo’s hand quite strongly. Out of nowhere, Rosa and Amanda—now in the form of a heavily bearded grey old man—started spraying some red petals up in the air as they sang an old tune. One basket was emptied and grey, old man Amanda brought out another from her bag. Jade had had enough.
"Will you two cut the crap?"
Typical of them, they didn’t cut the crap, until Jade threatened to throw another fireball at them.
For the first time, Leo laughed in front of Jade. What was this sudden turn around?
Rosa piped. "Welcome to the Fun League, Leo. Are you ready to get initiated?"
"Seems he’s ready," Grey, old Amanda boomed.
"Very well then. Grab me the Sworld of the Damned," Rosa declared to no one in particular. Jade creased and rubbed his forehead in complete frustration. There was little he could do to get rid of these troublesome girls.
"At your service, my Lady," Amanda boomed again, half kneeling.
"What?"
"Who said anything about joining any fun league? And what is this initiation?" Leo asked, almost laughing.
"Don’t mind them. They are kids and they just don’t know when to stop," Jade said.
Amanda started changing to another strange something again. Before she morphed into this animal completely, she scowled at Jade and said, "who are you calling a kid?"
Then something as big as a Rhino landed on its four legs, ready to charge. Only it wasn’t entirely a Rhino like Leo thought. It was something close to an Armadillo with a hard plated skin and a long and sharp tusk.
"Oh my precious dust," Jade lamented. Leo backed away a few places.
Rosa jumped in the middle and out of her pocket came a red piece of cloth. She waved it in the air and brought it down sharply. "Start," she yelled.
Leo couldn’t believe his eyes. How dangerous can these carefree mates get? Jade against a monstrous looking beast— Amanda— made no sense to him. Also he didn’t see why they are fighting in the first place.
"Earthlings are crazier than I thought, for real."
"The Rhino-dillo", as Leo already named this creature because of its semblance to both a rhino and an armadillo, shook its massive head and was ready to pounce. Jade didn’t flinch at all. He spread his legs apart and was indeed ready for the confrontation, with a smile. "Go!" Rosa yelled again. Her voice echoed round the empty reception hall.
Just then lean figure entered the reception from one of the sections in the library. He appeared both tired and bored, like he was just woken from a sleep that was just setting in. His bright blond hair caught the ray of sunshine through the window and sent a faint reflection on the white marble tiles. Leo can never mistake Riley Morningbolt for anybody.
"You kids never cease to get on my nerve," Riley said lazily through a wide yawn. He was behind Rhino-dillo Amanda before he spoke, so he was close enough to land a fairly good kick on its behind. Amanda, or rather the Rhino-dillo jumped from the soft kick. Jade seeing his brother, loosened up also and eased his stance. Rosa backed away to a corner.
Leo couldn’t move his feet.
"You should go fight something more dangerous," Riley said to Jade as he walked past Amanda. "This creature she just morphed into has very little mobility, don’t you agree? She has the plate to absorb your attacks, but even that plate will give in later after much damage. Fight something that can run and evade your attacks easily next time. Just a suggestion though."
Jade smiled and hummed a sarcastic, "heard ya."
Riley walked past them all, straight for the exit. But just before he went out, he called, "hello Leo."
"Whaaaaaaatttttttttt????!!!!"
Leo, his mouth appearing glued, wanted to reply to the shocking greeting, but Riley was gone.
Today didn’t feel right to him in any sense. He stylishly pinched himself to check if he wasn’t really dreaming. Alas, it was real.
"Riley just casually greeted me!"
"Okay Leo. Let’s head to my favourite section. Do you like the fantasy genre?" Rosa asked, expecting no answer. She was going to take him there whatever his answer may be.
Jade wanted to say something to Rosa, but was cut off with a stiff "no, later."
"Okay. Just remember you’ve used your only veto power for today. Which means I can still make you do it, but enjoy your day." Jade said and turned to go into a separate section of the library. Leo suspected that section was probably the Quirk Control books section. Jade appeared to be a geek for stuffs like that.
Amanda was now a Chimp. "Let’s go," she managed to say through swollen mouth. But before she left, she jumped over to the receptionist table to search through some stuffs under there. A while later, she came out with a ginger-furred cat with a pink leash round its neck. Chimp Amanda gave some instructions and sat the cat by the table. Ginger was as quiet and obedient as a cat’s behaviour would permit. After Chimp Amanda was satisfied, she jumped down the table and came over to where Rosa and Leo stood, then signaled for them to go.
Leo was astonished.
"What was that?" Leo asked when the Chimp was way ahead of them and out of earshot.
"The cat? That was a decoy cat. Since nobody ever bothered to come to the library to read, Amanda gets to play as she wished when we’re around. She places the cat there just in case any student came by. Many people know Amanda was a Space shifter, so they won’t be too surprised if they found a cat by the desk," Rosa explained.
"Hmm," Leo said, still lost in thought. "What about Amanda. Does she have a real form? She kept morphing into something new every minute. Was that beautiful girl I saw after the Goblin her real form?"
Rosa heard his question very clearly but pretended she didn’t. Leo tried to rephrase the question again, but was cut off again.
"I don’t have an answer to your question. You can go ask her if you want. But whatever you do, never call her a Chameleon."
"Ah, here we are," Rosa said. "My favorite section."
