Chapter 60: A week: Wednesday (A Confused Morning)

The same routine?

The alarm blaring. Waking up with a headache. Checking the notifications on the watch and on the AI device by the bedside. Will it ever end? Is it that bad though? This is the VIP section, Leo had to remind himself again. Everyone in the academy wished this for themselves. Why is he then complaining?

He didn’t bother for a shower today. Dragged his feet grudgingly to the bathroom and washed his face and his messy hair with cold water. It stung.

The first week of these especially classes must be attended without fail, so he’s still stick with the Combat uniforms till this week ends. The next week is then rotated with the normal classes. Two or three days out of the week will then be spent on the special classes.

That unsettling feeling made him sick again. In no time, he’ll be done with this current Combat class, and then he has to switch to the other classes. That wasn’t what unsettled him though. This current Combat class does not require a quirk, so he’s safe for now. But the Beast Weapon class and the Quirk Control classes? How was he ever going to do all without a quirk? There was no way he is using Loca’s pen in a Quirk Control class without risking sudden discovery.

"Coming to this academy might be a bad idea. Why did Loca push me here without a hint on how to rediscover that damn quirk?"

Was it really a quirk that saved him during the blast 78 years ago? What if it was something else entirely? But... But he saw it himself. He had seen that deep purple energy surrounding him, engulfing him. There was no reason for him to be alive at this time if not for that purple energy.

He was in grave danger then, and it had showed up for him. Why? How?

"Wait... Grave danger..."

A very nasty idea coursed in Leo’s brain at that moment. It sent shudders down his spine. It made his anus tickle. It made his feet cold. It made his eyes dry.

As if the only remedy was a physical act, he waved the air in front of him aggressively and mentally cautioned himself against that nasty thought. How did he even get to think of something like that?

He did the last button of his uniform, secured his shoes and again, was ready for the day. He wished for this morning to be as peaceful as the last. But as soon as he saw Jade standing in the middle of the living room, he knew his wish hadn’t been granted.

Of course, walk out as if he didn’t see him... That was the plan. And wish he didn’t get called.

And again, that wish wasn’t granted.

"Leo.."

Was that the first time Jade called him in that manner?

Leo stopped and turned slowly to face the red boy. It was too early to have provoked the spoiled rich brat, but who knows? They are blessed with the ability to pick out the tiniest annoying trait in anyone.

But that call was different.

"What did I do this time?" Leo asked solemnly but with no such intention.

Jade opened his mouth to speak but it was as if there were some tiny engineers in him dealing serious damage to his voice box. He was visibly in distress.

Leo mistook it for a way to pick up another fight with him. "Um, sorry, I’m gonna be late for class."

He then walked out.

Jade was frustrated and felt like punching something with all the fury in him. But instead, he only blurted out, "dimwit, what year was he born? ’I’m gonna be late for class’ who the hell talks like that?"

Another time then, Jade concluded. Why is it so hard though?

Leo didn’t have the appetite for breakfast this morning. So, he went straight for the Combat class, to arrive early and start practicing some moves before anyone arrives. Halfway to class, a figure caught his attention.

"Lam!"

The little boy ran.

Leo ran after him.

He chased him to a secluded part of the academy. Everyone is busy with their breakfast now, hence the deserted area.

"Don’t come near me," Lam yelled when he saw that Leo was closing in. He stopped running, faced Leo and started moving backwards while stretching his right hand in Leo’s direction.

"Why, Lam? Did I look like I was going to harm you? What has gotten over you, Lam?"

"Don’t ask me stupid questions. Don’t come close, I’m warning you."

Leo came close. He wasn’t going to harm Lam of course. And Lam wasn’t going to harm him too. He doesn’t have the ability even if he has the tendency to harm him. Apparently, Lam is the weakest in the academy.

"If you want me to leave you and forget about you, I can do just that. That is not hard at all. I just want to talk to you about what happened that night at the second year school building with the mecha-men... You knew Rosa was the one that saved our ass against that crazy detective, right?"

Leo kept closing in. Lam kept moving back.

"Did you see Rosa after that day? Did you thank her? Or do you think she’s a monster like the others? Do you also think she’s part of the people making this academy uncomfortable for you? Eh, Lam?"

"I said, don’t fucking come close!"

Leo lunged at him. His hand grabbed the hem of Lam’s unform but it wasn’t a firm grip. Lam backed away three steps and poised himself in some kind of awkward stance. Leo regained his balance and started walking at the boy again.

Lam spread his legs wide and with a deep grunt, moved his right hand behind him before swinging it in a wide arch like he was throwing stones.

For a second there, Leo was frightened. He thought Lam was indeed throwing something at him, but he had seen the hand earlier and there was nothing close to a projectile in it. What then was Lam doing?

Leo tried to move in again, and Lam did the same thing again. After doing it the second time, the crazy looking Lam looked at his hand like it was undergoing some malfunction.

Leo was confused.

"Wait, you think you have a quirk now or what?"

Lam wasn’t listening. He was bothered so much about his right hand. He was sweating. Nothing made sense to Leo anymore.

Why was Lam acting like he has a quirk? Lam was an Impossible. Lam is still an Impossible if all had gone well. Was he really trying to hurt Leo?

Leo knew that those shady teachers of that secret little group had reached out to Lam too, promising they can make him powerful even if he was quirkless...the same way they had reached out to him through Hunter Man. Lam came with Omal the night their last meeting was scheduled. They’d have had a successful meeting and at least ,have an idea what all these was about if the Mecha-men hadn’t complicated things. Of course, Lam was involved with that group too.

But, the next meeting was supposed to be the next Friday night. According to Hunter Man, no meeting has been held since the mecha-men incident. Then, how come Lam is behaving like Omal had succeeded in sneaking him a quirk like they had promised?

"Lam, what is the matter? Is something wrong with your hand? Do you have a quirk now? Are you okay? You’re sweating." It’s very cold this morning.

Lam, panting, yelled, "Get away from me. How many times must I tell you? GET AWAY FROM ME!"

Leo raised both his hands in surrender and took two steps back. "Okay, Angry Lam. I will get away from you. Just like you want it. I hope you get better soon though. You’re acting crazy, just so you know. You should go see Miss Charlotte of the Hospital wing. Who knows, she might be a nice therapist."

Leo walked backwards till he was sure he was out of attack range with Lam. He wasn’t confident in turning his back against this boy again. If it wasn’t a quirk attack, it might a stone or something close or more deadly.

He walked out of the deserted part of the academy, leaving Lam to figure out what was wrong with his hand.

Some of the students are already filtering out of the cafeteria. Most of them, still playing around. Still enough time for Leo to practice before class starts.

He was about to step into the classroom when he heard a familiar "ding" in his head. He paused in shock.

"Loca?"

------------

Peter Payne walked out of a corner in a deserted part of the academy, near the East wing.

Of course, he was doing his usual round of early morning eavesdropping, but this time, he had a target in mind. He wasn’t wandering to stumble upon any random news.

He had woken up before anyone to wait for Leo outside his dorm.

He followed him in the old morning as he walked in the direction of the classroom, until Leo saw someone and chased him down the East side.

Peter didn’t need to come close to hear what Leo was discussing with this boy called Lam, because he has the passive quirk of advanced hearing.

He heard everything, even though most didn’t make any sense to him. He knew he was going to piece everything together the more he found out.

"Guess there’s a lot more to this weakling Leo than a fake quirk device and than it meets the damn eyes."

"Another trump card in my hand, ahahaha," Peter laughed with no heart.
