Chapter 158: Grumpy Bird

Chapter 158: Grumpy Bird

Luna was washing out a rag that had been stained brown from the coffee while she talked to Adam about the unbelievable’ sight that he had just seen.

"Wait. What do you mean Rachel has limits?" she demanded, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.

Adam, still grinning like a man who had just discovered a new species, folded his arms in front of his chest and leaned against the nearest countertop

"Exactly what it sounds like. She blushed. Real, actual color in the face. Maybe even guilt."

"She doesn’t do guilt,"

Luna replied flatly with utter skepticism.

"Right?"

Adam gestured toward the ceiling as if waiting for divine confirmation.

"It’s like seeing a unicorn floss."

A very annoyed Aria was still sitting at the table as she tried to dry off her feathers that Luna had inadvertently spat on using another rag, however it was proving to be harder than she expected. She shot Adam a frustrated glare as she asked

"Why the hell is that your analogy?"

Adam glanced at Aria and replied

"Well cause it’s something that is practically impossible and nobody would ever believe it."

"Kinda like someone’s blood becoming corrosive or someone growing wings? Yeah, totally impossible."

Her sarcastic reply and deadpan expression caused Adam to pause for a moment before dropping his head and replying

"I see your point. With our luck, we might actually see that happen at some point..."

Luna gave a noncommittal shrug, her attention returning to her mug. She took another careful sip, deliberately avoiding Aria’s glare as the winged girl continued blotting herself dry with diminishing patience as Crystal joined in to help.

"So cool..."

Crystal remarked as she blotted at the feathers with a damp rag. Her eyes shimmering with wonder as she studied the wings up close.

Aria shifted uncomfortably but didn’t pull away.

"They’re wet. It’s not cool. It’s gross."

Adam furrowed his brow as he knew what Crystal had meant but somehow misinterpreted the context. Crystal seemed like someone who was smart and it showed by her actions. She didn’t seem to hear Aria’s remark or if she did, she was too absorbed to care.

"The structure is incredible. Look at the layering. There’s thermal insulation and aerodynamics. Are these really organic? How did you grow them?"

Aria paused, her fingers still gripping the rag. Her wings flexed slightly, feathers twitching as if remembering the moment.

"I was wearing a binder. One of the tight ones. Woke up in agony and thought I was dying. Couldn’t breathe, it felt like my back was on fire."

Luna slowly lowered her mug. Adam straightened up, the lightness draining from his expression.

"The pain kept getting worse," Aria continued, her tone flat. "Pressure building between my shoulder blades. Then something gave. I heard the fabric snap before I felt any sort of relief. That was when you walked in." ’

When Aria directed her gaze to Adam, he averted his eyes with a faint blush as he remembered that scene.

"Pervert."

Luna’s voice was as cold as ice as she directed a frosty glare at him with Crystal following suit. Aria on the other hand slowly chuckled as she remarked

"I know it wasn’t intentional and he was just trying to help. Though it was Arachne who actually did some things."

Luna frowned as she remembered that Aria mentioned something about that yesterday.

"What do you mean Arachne did some things?"

Luna asked with some concern on her face as her gaze shifted between Aria and Adam.

’How did she possess his body in the real world?’

"I don’t know what happened honestly. Arachne somehow knocked me out and when I woke up, I was in agony and everything was already over apparently."

Adam shrugged with a sort of feigned nonchalant attitude but everyone could tell at a glance that he was really bothered by it.

Crystal was confused as both Aria and Luna were talking about someone she didn’t know but she was too prideful to ask about it, instead choosing to continue focusing on Aria’s wings.

"So. Has Arachne said anything to you? I think she at least owes you an explanation."

Luna remarked with a furrowed brow but Adam’s reaction was a bit surprising. He was gritting his teeth as if he was about to lose his temper.

"What’s wrong Adam?"

"She hasn’t answered me once since I woke up yesterday. Her presence felt weak back then and it still does but it’s different....it’s as if she has left my head but left her stuff behind."

His voice was filled with frustration and annoyance yet no matter what he did, he couldn’t find an answer.

Aria noticed his discomfort and decided to try and change the topic.

"Hey Adam. Tell us about your Niece? Is the crazy driver dropping her off or something? Like an insanely competent Butler who for some reason can’t drive?"

Adam blanked for a moment before he began to snicker almost uncontrollably.

"Not at all...That’s my niece driving.."

His whole body was trembling as he stifled his own laughter at someone saying Penny couldn’t drive. After all, he himself would refuse to get in a car with her, it was too stressful for even him.

Aria’s mouth opened and closed, failing to find the words to respond to Adam’s words. Luna also frowned with concern as she asked

"Hold up. How old is your niece? I thought she was like 9 or 10."

"When did I ever say she was that? She’s 17. Soon to be 18.."

Crystal finally looked up from Aria’s wings, tilting her head.

"Is she even licensed?"

"Legally? Yes,"

Adam said, drawing out the word like it pained him.

She drives like she’s in a video game."

There was a sudden thud from outside. It sounded like something heavy hitting the pavement followed by the loud, drawn-out screech of tires. Everyone in the room froze for a second.

Luna slowly turned her head toward the window.

"That better not have been your niece."

Adam raised a hand in mock surrender.

"Look. I said she was driving. I didn’t say she was good at it."
