Chapter 148: Boys Night: A glimpse of Leo’s Past
Leo and Adam sat in Leo’s room both of them feeling undeniably uncomfortable as they tried to ignore Rachel’s screams.
"So..."
Leo began, trying to crack the awkward atmosphere that had settled in the room
"Anything new and exciting with you?"
Adam’s eyebrow shot up as he frowned at Leo.
"Really man? That’s how you try to break the ice? Everything we’ve been through in the last day or two can be considered ’exciting’."
Leo averted gaze as he sheepishly laughed.
"Yeah...you’re right. I was just trying to make things feel less weird but that clearly backfired. Do you have any ideas to talk about?"
Adam thought about it for a moment before he said
"Let’s talk about the past. I want to know more about you. What was it like growing up with a potential soon to be murderer as a sister? What’s the deal with your childhood friend? That sort of stuff."
It was Leo’s turn to frown as he was not expecting that. After a moment of contemplation, Leo opened his mouth.
"Fine. I’ll talk but you must do the same when I am done. Alright?"
Adam grimaced for a bit but nevertheless quietly nodded his head in agreement.
"Yeah... I’ll agree to that."
Leo noticed the look of reluctance on his face but chose to ignore it for now.
Using his hands to support his weight as he leaned back, Leo stared at the ceiling as he began to speak softly.
"You probably know some of my background since I am sure your family has done its research.."
Adam said nothing, clearly affirming Leo’s words to be true.
A self deprecating smile flickered across Leo’s face as he continued
"The news must have gone crazy when the story broke about a child who was just barely into his first year of high school contracting a disease so rare that it had no official name. From an outsider’s perspective that might sound cool, but to me and Luna? That was akin to being put on death row with my execution date being at any time without notice."
Adam, pursed his lips as Leo laid bare information that could not be shown on a document. Adam raised a hand to stop Leo, his amber eyes filled with a soft but quiet pity for his friend.
"Let’s not talk about that. Let’s focus on the better times. Don’t get me wrong Leo, I care but if we are going to talk about that sort of stuff, let’s do it over some drinks and maybe get a few more guys to join us. Two men sharing their trauma like this may not look good to certain people~!"
The small attempt at humor elicited a small chuckle from Leo who nodded in response with a wry but teasing smile.
"Fair enough man. Though there are two problems with that sentiment."
Adam cocked his head and with a look of curiosity smirked back at him
"Oh? Do tell~"
"Well first off I am only 18. I can’t legally drink."
Adam shook his head as if he was listening to something foolish
"My dear boy, this is why Fake ID’s exist. I can easily set that up. Also, we could do this next year when you are 19."
Leo nodded his head at that.
"That is true. But it doesn’t change anything with the 2nd issue."
"And that is?"
"Do you even have any guy friends?"
Adam froze for a second as he noticed Leo glancing at him with a mixture of mockery and mischief in his eyes. Unfortunately, Adam couldn’t deny his words as he indeed didn’t have any guy he could call a friend other than Leo.
"You know what? Fuck you!"
He growled out of embarrassment. He wanted to punch Leo but deep down he knew that if he actually did that, he would soon be sharing the same fate as Rachel
Seeing him act like this Leo began to laugh openly at Adam as he cheekily asked.
"Hey. Does that mean by default I am your best friend?"
Adam’s mouth opened and closed for a brief moment before turning his head away, growling.
"I need better friends it seems."
"Well tough luck bud. You’re stuck with us."
Perhaps in an attempt to avoid getting roasted any further, Adam raised his voice an octave and loudly said
"Enough about that. Let’s get back on topic. Tell me about your childhood."
Leo’s grin slowly faded as he began to think about his past which caused Adam no small amount of concern.
"You know you don’t have to if you don’t want to, right?"
Adam placed a supportive hand on Leo’s shoulder who’s sombre expression brightened ever so slightly in response.
"Thanks Adam. But no. I’ll talk. It would probably do me some good to talk about it with someone outside of the family."
Leo took a deep breath to center and calm himself down before he began to speak.
"I was adopted by the Haronyu family, Luna’s parents, when I was a toddler. Though I will always call them my parents because they treated me with love and affection as if I was their own. They never treated me like I was any different from Luna..."
Adam was at a loss for words, he had no idea that Leo was adopted and that information should have been reflected in the document he was given but strangely it wasn’t there.
"How do you know that you’re adopted? Did they tell you?"
Adam couldn’t help but ask. Leo shook his head with an indescribable expression on his face.
"No..It’s just that there were clues. Subtle but undeniably there. I have no baby photos, Luna is only 7 months older than me and I was the only blonde in the family. I was able to put two and two together."
Adam scowled at that reveal. While it was pure speculation on Leo’s part, it was also a distinct possibility that he could be right. That only left Adam with more questions than answers. He wanted to ask more but Leo chimed in with a concerned look on his face.
"Rachel’s screams have died down. Do you wanna check to make sure she’s not dead?"
Adam frowned as if to ask ’Why me?’ but Leo seemed to have read his mind and followed up with
"If you lose a limb in the process, you are the only one who can stick it back. Vine and Dandy was it?"
Adam scowled grumpily as he stood up and exited the room, checking to make sure that their other friend wasn’t truly dead.
