Chapter 45: Tortured
Thudd... !!
"Madam?"... Lily shrieked as she saw Liora falling on the floor.
Liora’s eyes were closed as she fell down; her head hit on the door. Lily and the doctor hastened towards Liora, who stumbled and fell out of the bathroom.
"Madam!" Lily exclaimed, her hands rushing to Liora’s. She crouched down, holding onto Liora’s arms; the lady doctor helped too.
Liora winced, rubbing her forehead where it had struck the floor. A pink mark was already starting to appear, the blow smudging the thin layer of makeup she had applied. She felt a flush rise to her face, not from pain but from the utter embarrassment.
"Are you okay, madam?"
Lily’s voice was laced with concern as she spun Liora around to face her, looking over her head to toe for a sign of injury.
"I-I’m okay,"
Liora grumbled, forcing a weak smile in an attempt to cover up her embarrassment.
Lily wasn’t buying it. She swiveled rapidly back towards the doctor, her hands still holding Liora’s arms. "You’re a doctor, aren’t you? Please, look after my madam."
"..." the lady doctor as she looked back and forth at the two women.
"I mean, it looks like Lily here cares more about you than you care about yourself, "the doctor jeered, crossing her arms.
Lily nodded. "Of course I am! Madam is very frail. Anything that happens to her"
"Lily, please," Liora cut in, waving her hand dismissively, though her ears burned at being called frail.
The doctor smiled before stepping closer, reaching out to examine Liora’s forehead. "It’s just a light bump. You’ll live," she chuckled again.
Still not satisfied with the doctor’s inspection, Lily took hold of Liora’s hand and dragged her over to the chair beside the doctor’s table. "Then sit down at least," she pushed, seating Liora in the chair.
Liora let herself fall into the seat, taking a deep breath.
’All of this... over a mouse.’
She would never live this down; her face still hurt.
Lily refused to back down. "Wait here, madam! I’ll fetch some water for you!" she exclaimed, already turning to rush out the door for that, but before she could take another step, Liora reached out and caught her wrist gently and whispered, "Lily, stop," stroking comfortable circles over Lily’s hand, her touch intended to soothe her.
"I’m fine, really. But..." her voice fell to a whisper. "I guess we are disrupting the patient’s treatment."
Lily’s eyes went wide with understanding it. She spun around to the doctor, her head bowed. "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be loud."
The physician smiled weakly, her head shaking as she approached the patient. "It’s okay. Just be careful; don’t wake her up."
As the physician continued examining the unconscious woman, Liora’s eyes wandered over to the body on the bed. It was then that she saw something; her eyes fell on the slight bulge of the woman’s abdomen under the skimpy blanket, she caught her breath.
Liora waited, waiting for what felt like an eternity before she at last spoke out the question that had already developed in her thoughts. "Doctor..." she began, keeping her voice low. "Is she... pregnant?"
The doctor faltered, her hand ceasing its movement as she tucked the patient’s blanket back up. Then she sighed, with a faint smile curled on her face "Yes, she is, but too weak."
"How long she might be?" Liora tilted to the side a little, trying to make a guess out of the shape of the bump.
’This is the woman from that day.’ she wondered
"She is, umm." The doctor stopped as she saw Liora getting up from her chair. She took a step a little closer to the bed. Lily, who had been massaging Liora’s shoulder just moments ago, loosened her grip and nervously watched as her madam moved to stand beside the patient.
Figuring out what Liora was about to do, the doctor hesitated, her fingers tightening slightly around the edge of the blanket as she stepped closer.
Liora’s face was questioning as if waiting for an answer; she wasn’t even sure how to phrase.
The doctor’s gaze flickered to Lily, then back to Liora. Should she ask her to step back? Tell her to sit down. If Lily had addressed her as madam, then this girl was likely someone of higher status; she could perhaps, even be the lady of the house.
And as a mere doctor, she could not simply take her by the hand and push her away because her patient’s details have to be confidential, and before bringing her here, Rowan had already ordered her not to disclose details but as Lily was the helper assigned to her and Liora was here in her urgency, she had already seen everything, but now she would know much more than that.
Still, Liora’s presence so close to the patient made the doctor uneasy. Careful with her words, she finally spoke. "Madam, if I may ask, could you please step away?"
"..." Liora’s brows knitted together slightly, almost confused. The doctor’s lips pressed into a thin line.
But Liora did not answer her; she blankly went ahead to pull the blanket covering the woman; she thought of the lady being tortured. It can be Lucien or Rowan, maybe Samuel too, but judging from her last interaction with Samuel, he did not seem dangerous but it cannot be denied the fact of their past; after all, a rotten apple spoils the whole barrel.
But before Liora’s finger could touch the blanket, the lady doctor held her hand midair and pulled her with force, which made Liora stumble behind, although in an instant Lily spread her arms and caught Liora. "Why did you push her?" she scolded, the doctor’s face turning pale as she realized what she had done. She stepped back, her fingers slowly loosened from Liora’s arm. The irritation that had flashed across her face a moment ago softened into regret.
Her gaze dropped, avoiding direct eye contact. "Forgive me, madam," she stuttered; her voice was quieter now, though not apologetic in the way Lily might have wanted. "I did not mean to offend you."
Lily, still standing in front of Liora protectively, wasn’t so easily swayed. She folded her arms,. "Then why did you push her?"
The doctor exhaled through her nose. "Because you don’t understand," she murmured.
Liora, still rubbing the spot where she had been stopped so abruptly, looked at the woman on the bed again. Her face was barely visible beneath the stray strands of damp hair clinging to her skin. Her breaths were shallow, barely there.
Liora swallowed, shifting her gaze back to the doctor. "Then help me understand."
The doctor hesitated, then, finally, she met Liora’s eyes. "She isn’t just pregnant, madam. She is dying," she galnced at the women "Madam, this woman has lost far too much blood. The wounds on her body... they’re not something a soft-hearted person like you should see."
Liora standing behind Lily, clenched her fists. "But didn’t you see them?"
The doctor met her gaze "Yes, I did. But I am trained for this. I have seen far worse, and with time, you stop flinching at the sight of cruelty."
Liora and Lily nodded together, but their stomachs twisted at the thought.
The doctor continued, "She is pregnant, for about three to four months along. It is still possible for her to give birth." Her voice wavered; she let out a small, broken sob. "But that is not the problem here."
Liora’s brows furrowed. "Didn’t you say she was dying?"
she nodded. "Yes, madam... she is."
Liora took a step closer. "Then why?"
The doctor sighed deeply, looking away. "That... I cannot tell you, madam."
Liora held Lily’s shoulder as she was standing in front of her and moved her aside. As Liora stepped forward, the doctor instinctively reached out, as if to stop her. But before she could, Lily caught the doctor’s wrist, shaking her head slightly. The doctor let out a quiet sigh but didn’t protest further.
Liora’s walked to the bed again, her fingers grasping the edge of the blanket. She peeled it back just enough to reveal the woman’s abdomen, careful not to startle her. The flickering candlelight from the candle kept on the table beside fell on bruised and battered skin; her skin was painted with scars.
Liora’s breath caught in her throat. ’What kind of suffering had she endured?’
Her eyes trailed lower until they settled on the barely swollen curve of the woman’s stomach. Even amidst the agony, the small life inside her continued to hold on.
