Chapter 34: They had to be dragged here.
Chapter 34: They had to be dragged here.
The estate hummed with restless energy; servants rushed through the hallways, their hushed voices blending into a constant murmur. Some were genuinely worried for their master, while others feared for themselves and their employment. If something happened to Lucien, what would become of them? The estate belonged to him. Their lives depended on his rule.
Mira pushed open the door to Liora’s room, stepping inside and closing it softly behind her.
"Madam," she called in a low voice, careful not to startle her.
Liora, who was still deep in sleep, curled on her side, her chest rising and falling in a slow rhythm. Her long lashes rested against her cheeks, and Mira hesitated. After last night, it felt cruel to wake her.
But she had no choice other than to wake her up, so she leaned closer and gently shook Liora’s shoulder. "Madam, wake up."
Liora stirred, her brows knitting together as she slowly opened her eyes. They looked hazy as she was still lost in sleep.
"Morning already?" She mumbled, rubbing at her eyes. "Yes," Mira said, standing up. She sighed as she said, "And the estate is in chaos."
Liora sat up straighter, shaking off her drowsiness. She looked at Mira with her big eyes. "Why?"
Mira sighed. "Master Lucien is sick."
Liora blinked, the sleep fully leaving her body at those words. "Sick?",
"Mm yes... A fever," Mira explained as she walked over to the wardrobe and pulled out a dress. "The whole estate is in a mess. The physician was called, but some said they were dragged here by Sir Samuel." She giggled as she smize while mentioning it, "But since the estate is far from the city, he did not arrive until this morning."
Liora swung her legs over the bed, planting her feet firmly on the cool floor. "Why they said that physicians were dragged here?’’
After hearing Liora’s question, Mira smilingly explained, "There were rumors of Madam of Master’s ruthlessness so I guess that is why they had to be dragged here."
"Oh, that is not good; Master Lucien didn’t seem like the kind of man to fall sick easily." Liora said she felt odd when she heard about him, and she did know about the part of him being injured last night when she was eavesdropping on them.
Looking around, she hesitated before asking, "Where’s Lily?"
"She was assigned work early this morning," Mira said, shaking out a light yellow dress embroidered with red cherries from the trunk where Liora’s clothes were, which was given to her by Queen Dowager. "But she’ll be around soon."
Liora barely paid attention; her mind was already elsewhere.
"I should go see him."
Mira stood frozen for a second before sighing. "Madam, the physicians are already attending to him. No one else is allowed in."
Liora hesitated. "But I’m his concubine."
Mira turned to face her; annoyance was clear on her face. "That doesn’t mean anything if he doesn’t acknowledge you, madam."
"..." Liora said nothing, but she thought, ’She is correct to say that he does not consider me anything but I still.’
Mira eyes softened as she saw Liora in her thoughts placing the dress down on the bed. "At least wait until they’re done."
Reluctantly, Liora nodded.
Mira helped her dress, tying the sash carefully at the back. Once finished, Liora smoothed her hands down the soft fabric and gave a small nod to herself.
She did not take much time to step into the hallway; Mira was following close behind.
The estate was even busier than she expected. Maids and servants moved quickly, some carrying buckets of water, a few bringing different leaves in a bamboo basket, and others holding fresh towels. Their expressions were tense, their gazes flickering toward the hall where Lucien’s room was.
Among them stood Beatrice; the stewardess looked worried, her sharp eyes overseeing everything.
The moment she spotted Liora, her gaze lingered, and Liora approached her and asked her, "What did the physician say?"
Beatrice studied the woman in front of her for a moment before responding. "Madam Liora, "She bowed as Liora was till a figure in the house no matter they ignore her or not but there were physicians here that too, from the palace, the word of Liora’s mistreatment could go out, so Beatrice responded, "Master Lucien has a high fever. The cut on his arm is turning blue, but the physician doesn’t believe it’s poison."
Liora frowned. "Then what is it?"
"The doctor doesn’t know yet, the " Beatrice admitted, then added, "But they’re treating him as best they can."
Liora glanced toward the hallway, a part of her itching to walk down it to see for herself but she knew she could not; maybe he would be awake by now. What if my presence makes the situation worse?
Beatrice caught the shift in her expression and tried guessing on what Liora must be thinking
"If you’re thinking of going to his room," she said, "don’t bother. No one is allowed in."
Liora looked at her, lips pressing together as that was what she thought of doing.
Beatrice exhaled, clearly growing tired of the conversation. "The only thing you can do is wait."
Liora clenched her hands, frustration bubbling in her chest; that was all she ever seemed to do was wait.
Mira, who had been standing quietly behind Liora, had heard everything.
She knew well that Beatrice didn’t think highly of Liora, but Mira had learned to bite her tongue. There was no point in arguing with someone like Beatrice.
Instead, she stepped forward, glancing between the two women. "Madam, we should wait. You haven’t eaten yet. Let’s have breakfast first."
Liora hesitated. Her gaze flickered back toward the hallway leading to Lucien’s room.
Beatrice , who held her tongue for too long let out a scoff, crossing her arms. "Yes, of course. The master is ill, but the concubine wants to sit and enjoy a meal."
Her voice was sharp, dripping with sarcasm. She tilted her chin up slightly with disapproval "Such a disgrace won’t be tolerated by the Queen Dowager. I hope you understand that, Madam."
Liora stiffened at her words,
Mira’s hands clenched at her sides, but she stayed quiet. She couldn’t afford to make an enemy out of Beatrice, not when Liora’s position was already fragile.
Liora took a slow breath before finally speaking. "I am not enjoying anything, Madam Beatrice."
Her tone was calm, but there was an edge to it.
"I only meant to see if he was well."
Beatrice arched a brow. "And what could you have done, exactly?"
"..." Liora said nothing.
Beatrice sighed, shaking her head. "If you truly wish to be of use, then don’t add to the mess. Go eat. Stay out of the way."
