Chapter 1257: Chapter 12 : Searching for Him
*Zara*
I headed toward Issac and Estella’s office again to let them know about the plans we had to find the Luna Lily. A massive sense of relief had settled in me since I’d been able to convince Noah to delay the wedding.
I sat down at the desk before Issac and Estella, exchanging the usual formal greeting. I said, “Noah has agreed to delay the wedding.”
Issac let out a breath, exchanging a relieved glance with Estella. He said, “Good. Thank you, Zara. To tell you the truth, we’ve never trusted Serena’s motivations.” He frowned. “Something is off with her.”
Estella nodded in agreement with Issac. “Thank the Goddess you managed to stall the wedding. Was it difficult? What with Noah being... Noah and all.”
I chuckled, unable to help it, at that. “It was, but I told him it would be better for the pack and his future family to put all our efforts into finding his true mate. Marriages of convenience very rarely work out. Worst case, which happens often, they are disastrous.”
Issac nodded. He then said, “This Luna Lily journey sounds like a lengthy, potentially dangerous one. I am glad to hear Noah is going along for added protection. He is a strong wolf.”
Estella added, “I hope this Luna Lily will illuminate the truth and give Noah time to really consider this decision.” Her tone was soft. I could see a mixture of doubt and hope in their expressions. They didn’t speak it aloud—I figured they didn’t dare to—but I could tell they were desperate.
It touched my heart that they truly wanted their son to be happy and find his true mate.
With that all situated, I returned to my room to plan the day. I’d taken a day off, wanting to get this situated before the journey to the Luna Lily, to try to find that shifter from the clearing.
With a baby growing in my belly, I wanted to find my true love so that we could be together after this situation with Noah. I was still determined to continue my job despite starting a family.
We would be happy together, and I couldn’t help daydream and recall that wonderful woodsy scent washing over me as he granted me one of the best moments in my life.
He must be looking for me too, I thought, and I knew I needed to give us a chance to find one another. As I gathered up my things and headed toward the entrance of the mansion, I caught word of some gossip.
This stuff could be relevant to my work. Noah and Serena were going to find out through the flower they weren’t true mates, after all.
Could there be nuggets of important information regarding other potential suitors? It was best to keep an ear out.
“You’ve heard about the delayed wedding, right? Can you believe that Alpha Issac is allowing Noah to do this over a flower?”
“I know, right? Why would he call off his nuptials over some fanciful flower tale? I’ve never heard of that sort of magic before.”
“It is a legend for a reason... key word is legend.”
I frowned, my faith in the Luna Lily unwavering. It definitely wasn’t just some legend, but rather exceedingly hard to find.
I moved on through the halls, wandering past another couple of Drogomor pack members discussing this news. Gossip really did spread like wildfire through this place.
Like before, I stayed out of sight, not wanting to be questioned about my part in all of this. I knew this flower would be of great benefit to finding Noah his true mate, even if there were many non-believers. Most of my patience was taken by me trying to explain that to Noah.
This time, though, the conversation held a little bit less doubt, which was intriguing.
“Could there be some truth to the myth?” a female pack member asked to another.
“Maybe. There are many types of magic in the world. Who’s to say this isn’t real? I hope it can be found.”
“Me too. Could Noah’s fated mate be revealed? What does that say for the rest of us... that we may have someone out there too?”
I put a hand over my heart, touched that, at least in some cases, the idea of the Luna Lily could inspire people to think more about their true match.
I eventually left the mansion, heading out to find mine.
When I arrived at the clearing, the sun was reflecting beautifully off the verdant leaves of the trees in the woods where I’d first met my mate.
I smiled, hope billowing in my chest. The weather did reflect my emotions today, even if I had so much stress weighing me down.
Taking a deep breath, I entered the woods, finding a shadowy spot and taking off my clothes. I put them into my bag, then shifted, grabbing the bag in my jaws and rushing through the woods.
Oh my.
It’d been a while, and this felt so wonderful—the wind whistling through my fur, the warmth of the sun on my skin. I almost wanted to run for the rest of the day, but I had a goal in mind.
So, I stayed on my course, stopping at the clearing and putting my bag down. I lifted my nose, taking in the scents of the forest, hoping to catch a familiar one.
Perhaps my true mate had been here recently? My heart thudded in excitement as I darted around, sniffing every tree that I could with hopes of catching his scent.
No such luck.
My heart sank as I kept on looking, eventually returning to normal and putting my clothes back on so I would look that way, too. Every perspective could help, but in this case, I found nothing more of value.
Disappointed, I let out a sigh, running my hands through my hair. My search had lasted until dusk, I realized. Soon, the stars would be blanketing the sky.
I wondered if I should stay there and wait.
No, I decided, that would be irresponsible. My wolf pressured me to do so, wanting to insist we wait for my true mate, but I had responsibilities. Begrudgingly, I went through the process of preserving my clothes again, then set off in my wolf form through the woods once more.
When I got back to the mansion, now in my human form, I checked my phone. As always, I was right on time, and headed toward Noah’s study to confirm the remainder of our plans.
“We’re ready to head out tomorrow, then?” I asked Noah, hoping he hadn’t suddenly changed plans because he didn’t feel like pursuing this.
“We are. Last chance to drop all of this and match with me, though, Zara... before the journey, that is,” he said with a wink, causing me to roll my eyes.
“I’ll pass,” I mumbled.
Noah said, “Serena is putting up a fuss, but will be joining us.”
I held back a frown. Issac and Estella were suspicious of her, and I couldn’t help feel that way as well.
“The more the merrier,” I said, trying to keep my voice upbeat. “Did you get all of the supplies I suggested on my list?” I’d given him the list since he was insistent on coming. I figured I might as well make him useful.
Noah nodded. He said, “We have the appropriate food rations and water, tools to get through rougher terrain, and the commercial plane ticket for our flight to Egoren. The SUVs have been rented as well. Everything is situated.”
“Good. Thank you, Noah,” I said, relieved that this was going smoothly so far, aside from Serena now joining us.
“You’re very welcome, beautiful,” he said in a seductive, but genuine tone.
With that, I bid him goodnight and prepared to head out tomorrow.
***
During the flight, there wasn’t much chatter. I sat next to Noah, who was between me and Serena. Serena looked out the window of the plane, musing, “I always love the landscape. Our pack territory is so beautiful. It’ll be wonderful to patrol and protect when we’re Alpha and Luna, right Noah?”
Noah glanced over to her, giving a nod. He said in a formal tone, “It will. You’re right. The pack, the territory... it’s all beautiful.”
They clearly weren’t in love, that was for sure. They did both have a passion for their pack, though, and the will to help it, even if Serena’s reasoning was more than a little suspect.
The plane ride ended without much further conversation. Serena made some observations in a dreamy tone, and Noah agreed with her. Some of what he said actually had feeling, but not much.
The SUV was all situated, just like Noah had said. There were no obstacles there, either. I was glad things were going well so far, but I couldn’t help frequently side-eyeing Noah and Serena.
They walked side by side together, and I couldn’t help observing just how perfect they looked as an Alpha-Luna couple. My heart clenched at that idea. Even if they weren’t in love, maybe it would be better for the pack?
Was I chasing a pointless dream? Now that I was pregnant, I needed to start thinking more practically. The flower would confirm that Noah and Serena were not fated, but what then?
Similarly, if I didn’t find my mate, my child would grow up fatherless. I balked at that idea, not wanting to put my child through that. I wouldn’t be able to carry on with my career at all, either. I’d be hopeless.
Was I being foolish, clinging this strongly to the notion of desired mates? What would I do if I couldn’t find the shifter in the woods again?
My eyes fell upon Noah and Serena, who looked wonderful together.
It was very easy to picture them side by side at official gatherings or family events. Anyone on the outside looking in would fall for the illusion of the perfect couple.
But I knew by the way Noah spoke to her that he was very bored and uninterested, and I could tell by the way she smiled placatingly that they could only tolerate the pretense for so long.
He wasn’t in love. Neither was she.
It was strange how both seemed otherwise smart and sensible but were potentially willing to walk into one of the worst mistakes anybody could make—a loveless marriage.
Practical in the moment or not, true love was beautiful and the best outcome. I needed to remember that for myself and remain hopeful, and I had to take this one step at a time.
I may have had far less time now to find my own mate, but if I couldn’t lose sight of the beauty of destined mates. I had to believe that the Moon Goddess brought us together and would help us find each other again.
But how long would I bury my doubts and carry on hoping?
