Chapter 1240: Chapter 151 : First Kiss

*Rhys*

“I think you’re ready to get back to your old life,” the physical therapist said as he stretched my legs and checked my range of motion.

“Finally!”

“Prince Rhys, I’m writing up in my report that you can go back to school, but I want you to take it easy still. Your body has mostly recovered but you’re still building your strength. Don’t charge onto the sports field full force, okay?” He turned away and began making notes on a clipboard.

I hopped off the therapy table and wiped myself down with a hot towel.

“I’ll be careful. Make sure to tell my parents I’m ready to go back to school. I need something normal in my life.”

“They’ll have my report by the end of the day.”

This day hadn’t come fast enough. I’d spent months going through physical therapy and training regimes. It was agony. I just wanted my life back. I could finally return to the Egoren Academy.

A driver dropped me off at the school steps the next day. I stepped out and took in a deep breath. It felt so good to be out of the palace.

Students ran up and down the steps, clumped together and talking. I heard so much laughter and happiness.

My heart swelled. It was a little weird to be back, but I was ready.

I checked in at the front office with a note from my physical therapist and parents.

“Well, everything looks in order, Prince Rhys. It is mid semester, so you’ll have some catching up to do,” the receptionist said as she typed away at her keyboard.

“I had tutors keeping me on track. I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

She handed me a folder. “Here’s your schedule and teacher assignments. If you could get your teachers to sign that form in there and return it to me at the end of the day, that would be great.”

I nodded and tucked the folder under my arm.

Walking through the halls was strange and familiar at the same time. All my peers stopped and stared at me. As the prince, they obviously knew who I was, but I’d been gone for months, and I knew my parents hadn’t been forthcoming with my whereabouts.

“Welcome back, Prince Rhys,” a jock called, waving to me.

“Thanks.” I waved back.

Everywhere I went, people were excited to welcome me back, even the teachers. Whenever I asked them to sign the form from the office, they each praised me on my recovery and my return to school.

It got old, fast.

“Are you going to join us on the lacrosse team again?” one of my old teammates asked as we walked from math to science.

I sighed and bowed my head. “Not this year. Maybe next year.”

“Too bad. We could really use you out there.” He clapped me on the back and ran ahead.

“Yeah... I’d like to be out there,” I muttered.

I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck. My physical therapist said I needed to keep up with my exercises for a few more months before I could get back into sports. Even then, I’d have to do a lot of extra training. It sucked not being able to play sports with my friends.

In science, my teacher was lecturing about the different kinds of bonds between atoms and molecules. It was something one of my tutors covered in the palace.

I doodled in the margins of my notebook and my thoughts wandered back to the mystical visions I kept having, and my doodles began to reflect the tone and images from those visions.

“What are you drawing?” The girl sitting next to me leaned over my desk.

“Um... nothing.” I quickly turned the page in my notebook.

“It looked pretty neat, like from a horror book or something.”

“It was just a doodle.”

“Lighten up a little, geez. I don’t remember you being so broody.” She scoffed and turned back to her own notes.

When the bell rang, I packed up my books and headed to the quad for lunch. I thought that I could come back to school and be the same carefree kid I was before, just like my fellow students.

But they hadn’t seen what I’d seen though, and they hadn’t been through what I’d been through.

I sat alone at a table in the quad and nibbled on my sandwich. Peals of laughter and excitement rippled through the crowd of other students. No one came to sit with me or talk to me. I was never this alone or isolated before my accident. Everything they were laughing about seemed so silly and pointless.

Suddenly, a girl was standing in front of me. She had her hands tucked behind her back and kept casting glances at the group of girls at a nearby table. She had dark, wavy hair and bright blue eyes, and a slight frame, expect for her nice hips.

“Hey. This is your first day back, right?” she asked, her cheeks turning red.

“Yeah... you’re Alexa, right?” I remembered her. We weren’t friends, but we had some mutual friends.

“Oh, you know my name?” She giggled, and her cheeks got even redder.

“I do.”

“Well, welcome back.” She leaned in and kissed my cheek.

Before I could react, she ran back to her friends, giggling. They all praised her and laughed with her.

Slowly, I raised my hand to my cheek and touched the warm spot she’d left with her lips.

What was that about?

The next day I made it through my classes by doodling in my notebook again. By lunchtime, I was ready to go back home and work with my tutors.

“Prince Rhys, sit with us!” Jason, my former lacrosse teammate called and waved me over.

He was sitting with a bunch of the lacrosse team and a few cheerleaders.

“Uh... sure.”

They made space for me at the table. I used to know these guys, but I hadn’t seen them in a long time.

“So, how is it going?” Jason asked.

“You know... school is school.”

“Hey, can I join you?” Alexa slid into the seat beside me. “How are you doing, Prince Rhys? You seemed kind of down yesterday.”

“I’m okay. It’s a bit of an adjustment coming back, but I’m getting used to it.”

“I think you’re really brave for coming back in the middle of the school year,” she said. “But I’m glad you did.”

“Thanks.”

“Is it hard to keep up with your schoolwork and physical therapy?” she asked.

“Nah.” I shook my head. “I’m only doing weekly sessions now, so I have a lot more time for schoolwork.”

“Well, I hope you can play lacrosse again next year.”

“Me too. But we’ll see. For now, I’m focused on math competitions, chess club, and debate team. I’ve got to keep my mind sharp.” I tapped my temple.

Alexa giggled. “That’s a good idea.”

“Aw, aren’t the two of you so cute!?” Jason teased. “I bet you’re going to get married and have a bunch of little royal babies.”

Alexa’s cheeks turned bright red, and she looked at her lap.

“Cut it out, Jason!” I snapped.

He shrugged. “Sorry, man. You’re just so cute, the two of you.”

“It’s fine, Rhys. Jason’s just being a jock,” Alexa shot back.

“That’s right, I’m pure jock.” Jason flexed his muscles.

I rolled my eyes.

“Besides, Rhys, your accomplishments are a lot more admirable than Jason’s. I mean, with all the work you’ve done to get back here, I think your determination is amazing and you’ve made such a huge recovery.” Alexa smiled shyly at me.

I felt my cheeks grow hot and I smiled at her. “Thanks.”

“Yeah, man, we’re all proud of you,” Jason and his friends echoed.

It was weird to get so much praise and attention, but I was glad my peers recognized what I’d been through.

Alexa started showing up at debate, math competitions, and chess club. She was always there to cheer me on and give me encouragement. I appreciated her support.

“Can I come with you to rehab today?” she asked walking me out of school one night.

“It’s pretty boring.”

“That’s okay,” she said. “I’ve got homework to do. I’d just like to see what you’re doing.”

“Sure.”

Alexa sat there the whole time I worked with my physical therapist. Whenever I struggled with something, she came over and put her hand on my shoulder.

“You’ve got this Rhys. I know you do.”

Her support was endless and so important to me. I could always push through with her by my side.

She started coming with me to my rehab every week. Whenever I started to struggle, all I had to do was look up and see her smile and it gave me the encouragement that I needed. I didn’t know why she decided to help me out and be there for me, but I appreciated it so much.

I was just getting back into school when the Winter Moon Ball at the palace arrived. It was a big royal event with stuffy adults and not a whole lot for me to do.

“Mom, Dad.” I approached them in the ballroom while they oversaw the hanging of decorations.

Sparkling snowflakes hung from the ceiling and tinsel was strewn over the chandeliers.

“What is it Rhys?” my mother asked. She ran her hand through my hair.

I waved her off. “Can I invite a guest to the Winter Moon Ball?”

“Of course. Who did you have in mind?” she asked.

My cheeks burned and I looked down. “Just a friend from school.”

“Okay. Well, I can’t wait to meet her.” My mom winked at me.

I groaned. How did she know it was a girl?

I was not surprised that Alexa agreed to be my guest. She hadn’t ever been to an event at the palace before, and I wanted to make it special for her.

I showed up at her house in a big limo.

Alexa came down the steps in a sparkling dress. She had a big smile on her face, and she was wearing heels. She looked very grown up and elegant. My jaw dropped as she approached the limo, her sparkling dress flowing like she was covered in little snowflakes.

I opened the door for her. Alexa smiled shyly and slid into the limo.

“You look so beautiful,” I told her.

She had glittering gems in her hair, clipped in with barrettes. She looked like a snow queen.

“Thanks.”

“I got you this.” I handed her a corsage with moonstones on the flower petals, making it glitter just like her dress.

“Oh, Rhys! This is beautiful. Thank you so much!”

I slipped the corsage on her wrist and the limo headed to the palace. I was nervous. I wanted my parents to meet Alexa and like her because she was such an important part of my life now.

I escorted her into the ballroom. Alexa’s eyes widened at the dazzling decorations.

There was an ice sculpture of kissing swans in the center of the ballroom, and people were already dancing. A live band played soft music. Waiters walked around with champagne glasses and appetizers on trays.

“This is amazing,” Alexa said. “It’s so fancy. I feel out of place.” She bit her lower lip and looked down at her feet.

“Nonsense, you can totally fit in with these nobles.” I took her hand. “Come dance with me.” I sounded a lot more confident than I felt as I led her onto the dance floor.

I twirled her around and dipped her low, following the beat of the music. She blushed and giggled when I pulled her closer.

“Wow, you’ve gotten a lot stronger,” she said, squeezing my bicep.

I smirked. “Thanks to you and your support. I can’t thank you enough for standing beside me.”

Alexa smiled brightly. “You’ve been through a lot, and you don’t deserve that. No one does. I just want to be here for you.”

The music slowed down and the lights dimmed. I slipped my arm around Alexa’s waist and pulled her against me.

She gave a nervous laugh. “I don’t know the steps to a dance like this.”

“Just let me lead. Follow along,” I said. I led her in the steps and she picked them up quickly.

Alexa leaned in closer and pressed her forehead to mine.

My confidence surged again, and I closed the gap between us. I pressed my lips to her soft, supple mouth.

Alexa gasped and kissed me back.

My heart raced and I held her closer.

When we pulled apart, I caught my mother and father watching me, both wearing knowing smiles.

I rolled my eyes at them and kept dancing with Alexa. I’d dance with her all night.
